David Akers still has plenty of strength in his 37-year-old leg.
Akers, the veteran kicker for the 49ers, nailed a 63-yard field goal on the final play of the first half today at Lambeau Field, tying the NFL record for the longest ever. Tom Dempsey, Jason Elam and Sebastian Janikowski have also made 63-yard field goals; only Akers and Dempsey have done it outside the mile high elevation of Denver.
The kick, which bounced off the crossbar before going through the goal posts, was Akers’ third made field goal of the game, and it came at the end of a first half in which the 49ers were very effective against the favored Packers in all phases of the game. Alex Smith has passed well, including hitting Randy Moss for a touchdown, and the 49ers’ defense has been impressive in holding the Packers’ high-powered passing game in check.
At halftime, the 49ers lead the Packers 16-7.
