For starters, that is one tough SOB.

Why was this never reported on the injury report? Does that not give a competitive advantage to the Patriots by teams not knowing to blitz his injured side?

Now, when he retires, is he going to be able to sue the NFL and the Patriots because they allowed him to play with this injury, even though he was willing to play with it?

I’m sure the pain was ridiculus at first, so props to him. But John Elway and Thurman Thomas both played their careers without an ACL, you can replace it with a brace.

Not buying it. Sports journalists rarely differentiate between partial and fully torn (partially because you only know what teams say but I’d bet more so due to ignorance) so I applaud the note but PUHLEASE as if training staff didn’t know it was fun torn??? Total bull. TOTAL bull.

There’s a simple physical test that can verify if ACL is fully torn or not (Lochman’s Test) without need of MRI. we all saw Giants TE try to stop on sidelines during Super Bowl and saw him COLLAPSE in agony: for good reason.

IF Mankins had a fully torn ACL and played on it it was only with the aid of painkillers a la Romo Ribs.

But then that sort of attention to detail would burst the sensationalism of such articles.

I am pretty sure that Roberto Garza has played his entire NFL career with no ACL in his right knee. I don’t know how big of a deal it is if you don’t have to cut on it. I have a friend how tore his knee up in high school, and he has been missing an ACL for the last 20 years. It hasn’t caused him any problems in everyday life. Mankins is a tough SOB for this though, because I believe that it is a very painful injury when it first happens.

Too bad it never happened. The bone in the tip of his pinkie finger was crushed in the last game of the 1985 season. Rather than have it repaired via bone graft, which would have benched him not only for the playoffs but also the start of the 1986 season, it was determined that he’d just lose the fingertip after the season. Lott played through it the next week in the playoffs against the Giants. The Giants beat them 17-3, and the fingertip was surgically removed after that. The guy was GREAT, one of the BEST and TOUGHEST EVER, and there’s no need to perpetuate a myth to prop him up.

Gutsy by Mankins. Smart? Maybe not, but gutsy. And leave it to the Patriots to fail to report an injury for the entirety of a season -_- Does this violate some sort of player’s safety rule? Seems like it might. Just Saying. On a side note I’m excited to see Russell Wilson play and the game between the 49ers and Packers.

The Patriots orthepedic surgeon, Bert Zarins, diagnosed and repaired ACL tears in both of my knees (different times). Zarins can identify a tear without an MRI (which he still reviews) just by wiggling your knee. If Mankins had a tear the Patriots had that knowledge. Makins is one tough sob to play with a tear all year. The pain can be excrutiating.

Roger Goodell will now penalize the Patriots for keeping that a secret from the Saints.

Goodell will then fine the Saints for wanting to use the information to potentially put a bounty on the Patriots had they met in the playoffs.

Maybe someone should fine Goodell for having an injury reporting requirement that helps make a bounty system possible in the first place.

Kenny Phillips played with a torn acl in college and Phillip rivers did in the 2007 post season. It’s possible it just hurts like heck.
