Michael Vick escapes with a game the Eagles tried to lose

Philadelphia Eagles v Cleveland Browns Getty Images

Michael Vick made the play at the end of the game to win it.

But he made enough of the kind to lose it throughout the day to allow an inferior team to hang around and nearly steal one.

Vick’s touchdown pass to Clay Harbor with 1:18 left gave the Eagles a 17-16 win over the Browns, but he did his best to give them the game the rest of the day.

The Eagles turned the ball over five times, with four interceptions by Vick.

The last of those was returned for a touchdown by linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, giving the Browns a 16-10 lead in the fourth quarter of a game that looked like it was never going to end.

Vick was 29-of-56 for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns (51.0 rating). That may excite fantasy owners (if your league doesn’t take points away from picks), but in reality football, it won’t hold up long.

For one thing, the Eagles struggled to protect him, and for a guy already wearing a Kevlar vest, that kind of treatment won’t last. They had problems with penalties (12 for 110 yards), and even getting the snap to him was an adventure.

They were fortunate to be playing who they were playing.

The Browns’ rookie class didn’t have a great day, the kind of struggles they should expect.

Quarterback Brandon Weeden was 12-of-35 for 118 yards and four interceptions (5.1 rating).

Running back Trent Richardson had an unspectacular 19 carries for 39 yards. Other than a 9-yard burst which took off the helmet of Eagles safety Kurt Coleman, he averaged 1.7 yards per attempt.

But Coleman had the final pick, allowing the Eagles to escape with one they should have lost, and will against better competition.

One of the ugliest games I’ve ever seen.

  2. greymares says: Sep 9, 2012 5:10 PM

as an Eagle fan i hope the 56 attempts is enough for a pre-season, Vick was horrible but he had a lot of help. the protection was bad, the decision not to run the ball in the 3rd quarter was poor, 15 penalties called 12 accepted certainly not acceptable. playing pretty much straight up against a coaching staff that knows them pretty well. but it goes under the “W”. and time to get back to work.

  3. prosourcetalk says: Sep 9, 2012 5:16 PM

Weeden looked horrible. McCoy would have won this game.

  4. essentialsausage says: Sep 9, 2012 5:17 PM

Brandon Weeden is TERRIBLE. Huge mistake as a draft choice.

  5. Sandra Lee's Cans says: Sep 9, 2012 5:21 PM

The Eagles aren’t as good as they think they are to let a Browns team using low round draft picks and undrafted rookies on defense get them out of their game. Cleveland’s offense still sucks but Weeden is a rookie and Richardson had no reps in preseason.

Mike Pick is way overrated and will not take Philly to the promised land.

  6. bdkite says: Sep 9, 2012 5:22 PM

If it was Eli Manning and the Giants, they would be talking about how “elite” he is and how he brought the team back for victory.

  7. cambam36 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:22 PM

If the Eagles offense plays that way next week, the Ravens will destroy Philly. At least the defense looked good (granted, against a weak Cleveland team).

    They call this hope?

  9. nitty32 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:22 PM

As an eagles fan myself ,imo the eagles didn’t win, the browns lost it

  10. dequan81 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:22 PM

Nice to to kick of that Dynasty campaign, huh? Seriously a win is a win, if they weren’t playing the Browns it wouldn’t have been a win.

  11. cav2ya says: Sep 9, 2012 5:24 PM

Man, no doubt they should of lost.
BUT, i can’t blame Vick for the ugliness of it all… what was the pass/run ratio? Again, Andy Ried doesn’t run the ball, when McCoy showed he could burnt he browns for chunks, the call was still for a pass play.. I don’t think i’ve ever seen a QB pass that much, on almost every play.. not even brady or manning..
Vick still should’ve been benched after 4 int’s. let the rookie in, cause the browns staff doesn’t know him.. they obviously had Vick’s number today, and that only comes from the familiarity of the former coaches and players scheming…

The Eagles D did a great job today though, honestly, the browns should have won. with a lot more points, if the Eagles D was like last yrs Defense..

And let’s not kid ourselves, the Browns may be a team of reckoning this year.. look at Wheedon’s numbers from college.. more the Brady and Manning, and Bradshaw.. so he’s no fluke..
I’m just glad they lost, even if only a point..

Don’t get too down on Brandon Weeden.

He’s got plenty of time to get it together; he doesn’t turn 30 until next week

  13. macjacmccoy says: Sep 9, 2012 5:25 PM

But you all are forgetting the most important part. None of it matters. The Eagles got the W and not a single turnover or penalty gets carried over to next week.

Each game is its own, and your performance in one doesnt dictate how you’ll play in another. If it did we would all know by 12 o’ clock Monday night who was going to win each fantasy leagues.

The NFL doesnt work that way so everyone needs to keep their complaining or gloating in perspective.

  14. deenice810 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:25 PM

More classic play calling from Andy Reid and Mike Vick proving to
everyone that he is who we though he was, a turnover machine who will make a few spectacular plays.

  15. whoisedgy says: Sep 9, 2012 5:28 PM

Pat Shurmur didn’t give the Browns a chance when he only went for 1 after the Browns’ pick six. If you are a young (lousy) team, you have to pull out all of the stops. The way Weeden was playing, you had to figure they weren’t going to score again. This one’s on Shurmur. Oh by the way, Brandon Weeden looked like he was lost. Great job keeping him out of the 4th pre-season game.

  16. 4whateva says: Sep 9, 2012 5:31 PM

4 int…vick appears to be in mid-season form!

  18. fmwarner says: Sep 9, 2012 5:33 PM

I can’t believe they threw 56 times considering what happened when they threw vs. when McCoy ran.

  19. joeyd524 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:38 PM

Shame, rookie lb holds onto that ball and it’s game over-season over

  20. dirtydrynn27 says: Sep 9, 2012 5:45 PM

I wonder if everybody still thinks that the Eagles will win this division…..Personally I dont see it happening!

  21. markbul says: Sep 9, 2012 5:51 PM

I assume Holmgren’s agent is already talking to ESPN about a new job.

  22. mojosmagic says: Sep 9, 2012 6:00 PM

A win on the road in the NFL is a win. God knows we lost enough crazy games last year.

  23. reidstinks says: Sep 9, 2012 6:02 PM

Reid should be fired now and Vick should be cut tomorrow. Start the Foles era now. And to rub salt in the wounds….Akers hits a 63 yard FG as I type this.

  24. pacodawg says: Sep 9, 2012 6:05 PM

Marocic catches the ball before the half on
    Third and two
First down Philly doesn’t get ball
Back and score. Never see that in the box score

  25. rugdaniels says: Sep 9, 2012 6:10 PM

Vick had a good half-season and hasn’t done anything since. I realize Eagles fans are the most delusional in the league, but even they must realize Vick isn’t taking their team anywhere.

  26. thepunkyqb says: Sep 9, 2012 6:14 PM

I can’t help but keep remembering L.McCoy’s “we got this comment”…if this is what he meant by that then they are in for some serious hurt this season

  27. nfcbeastly says: Sep 9, 2012 6:31 PM

As an Eagles fan, I will stand by the starting qb & I rarely am one that roots for a back-up to come in. Today was a different story, it would not have been a bad idea to give Foles the ball. It was obvious that Jauron and the Eagles of Ohio schemed for Vick. I still don’t understand why Reid and Marty don’t feed the rock more to McCoy. They do NOT run a west coast offense in my opinion. It’s the Andy Reid offense……

  28. broncosnative says: Sep 9, 2012 6:34 PM

There were more INTs (8) than TDs (3) in this game, sloppy play but a win os a win for the eagles and they have to play better next week against the ravens. Looks like holgrem eating his words when he said weeden is ready right now.

  29. janvanflac says: Sep 9, 2012 6:41 PM

Maybe Vick was just rusty, basically not having played all preseason. He actually said that he felt like he was. But I would have him on a pretty quick hook next week if he throws into triple coverage again.

  30. coop16 says: Sep 9, 2012 7:05 PM

Both Weeden and Richardson were disasters. These are the first-round picks who were supposed to jump-start our offense?

After awhile you have to wonder if there’s something in the water in Cleveland … guys who could play in college seem to be wandering around in a daze once they put on that Browns jersey.

  31. cleverbob says: Sep 9, 2012 7:10 PM

I doubt Demetress Bell will be inactive again next week.

  32. savocabol1 says: Sep 9, 2012 7:26 PM

If it wasn’t for a rookie lb dropping a sure fire interception the browns would have won the game. You act like the browns were some division four college team out there. Anyone that watched the game would realize that they were literally one play away from putting a win in the books.

  33. bobbyhoying says: Sep 9, 2012 8:02 PM

You know if he plays like this against the Ravens the entire stadium will call for Foles.

  34. philly2boston says: Sep 9, 2012 8:04 PM

first, 56 attempts for a “rusty” qb is egregious.
second, the D played well against a young O. D. Ryans and the ” weak” back 7 in particular.
third, ST looked good and even saved the day on many occasions.
fourth, this is the FIRST game of the year.
    fifth, AR is DONE.

  35. josephmuhammad says: Sep 9, 2012 8:33 PM

So the Eagles did not make the point spread because a number of them played like Victor Cruz did the other night. Maybe they run in the same circles. I’m not a betting man myself, but for those of you who are, do you know how prevalent organized crime is in America? I would learn the lesson and not gamble.

You cannot make that as an excuse because I could of said the only reason why the Eagles barely won is because of Vick…NICK FOLES

  37. nitro276 says: Sep 9, 2012 9:27 PM

The Eagles lost games last year that were supposed to have been automatic wins and it cost them the playoffs. This game was supposed to be an automatic win and they got it. It was ugly! Though they should have won by 3-4 touchdowns, the bottom line is, they won.

  38. joeyd524 says: Sep 9, 2012 9:32 PM

    Ravens huge next week

  39. jhig713 says: Sep 9, 2012 9:47 PM

Those who blame the offensive line needs to go back and watch the highlights of all of Vicks interceptions. He had great protection on every single interception play. The first half the line was suspect, but the second half they played much better. Vick made poor throws, that’s it. And I’m a Vick/Eagles fan. And any O-Line looks bad when a QB holds on to the ball too long. After 3 seconds, its the QB, not the line.

  40. mail2bency says: Sep 9, 2012 11:20 PM

    Seriously speaking-

Any mediocre QB wins against the Eagles today. Fortunately for the Eagles, they played against quite possibly one of the worst I’ve ever seen throw as a starter in this league.

Weeden, go to the Arena league where you belong.

  41. phillyphannn83 says: Sep 9, 2012 11:43 PM

Marty Mornhinweg should be fired right now! HE calls the plays, not Andy. They couldn’t stop McCoy! They were the worst team in the NFL last year against the rush, yet we ony had 14 rushing attempts by the time we had 45 passing attempts. Nothing else from this game matters, not the turnovers, not the horrendous officitiating, nothing! Play calling caused all the other problems. Anyone who doesn’t get that doesn’t understand football.

    ====================================

Vick’s 2nd pick came when he was flushed from the pocket because King Dunlap got beat inside. Immediately one play after a big gain by LeSean McCoy was negated by a Dunlap holding penalty. Not saying that Vick isn’t responsible for his poor decision making, just that his O-line did not play that well. He had time when they kept extra blockers in, but then whichever receivers were left were not getting open.
