Pats roll over Titans, as Chris Johnson gets bottled up

Chris Johnson, Vince Wilfork AP

It wasn’t 59-0, but it was still convincing.

The Patriots went to Nashville and won by 21 points, 34-13.  It was the ninth straight season-opening win for New England.

Tom Brady, despite a busted nose, was still Tom Brady, completing 23 of 31 throws for 236 yards and two touchdowns, including one to each of the team’s top tight ends, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.

Running back Stevan Ridley added 125 yards on 21 carries, plus a touchdown.  As long as he stays healthy, Ridley figures to be the top option for the Pats’ running game.

For the Titans, quarterback Jake Locker injured his left shoulder while making a tackle on a fumble that wasn’t a fumble, and he didn’t return.

But at least Locker was the leading rusher for the Titans, with 11 yards on two carries.  Running back Chris Johnson gained only four yards on 11 carries.

What Florio continues to omit is that Jake Locker is the first casualty of incompetent scab offcials. He was hurt on a play that should clearly have been blown dead, well after the play should have ended. Explain that one away Roger

4 FREAKIN’ YARDS! 2 sacks, 2 turnovers 20 yards rushing.

Jones, Hightower, and Wilson all made big plays for a revamped defense. It might only be Tennessee, but its a step in the right direction.

When is the last time New England won a game where Welker finished with 3 catches for 14 yards?Ridley could be the most effective back since the days of Dillon.

where are all the calls for johnson to give back the titans some of the money he held out for? he is not near the back he was before he held out but the titans are paying him best back in the league money. and peple wonder why running backs do not get big money deals any more.

Wow ……. 2,ooo yards is a loooooooong way off, at this rate. Dude is gonna need a MONSTER week next week to make up for this. Might have to bust open for fifty yards!

    No way!!!

That was to fast to tell if it was a catch or not without the replay.

The officials (replacement or REAL) are trained to call it a catch if they are uncertain then let it go to review.

After seeing the replay a couple of times, I thought is was a catch. Dude had two feet down and had turned upfield. It was close enough that I really didn’t have a big problem with it being ruled no catch.
Regardless, the refs have been told (last couple year) to let those pays go on, and let replay call it back if needed. Especially on turnover plays where a premature whistle can be a game-changing mistake.
Other than the missed pass interference call before the Titans first field goal, I thought the refs did their job well….

Titans should restructure his deal and if he does not accept then cut him. This man has got his money and lost his skill.

    Contract: 6 yr(s) / $55,260,000

    Signing Bonus $10,000,000

    Average Salary $9,210,000

    $30 million guaranteed

    He got a whole 4 yards….What a deal!

    Let’s see:

    Run the ball. Check

    Stop the run. Check

Yup, everything that is needed for a championship.

CJ2K – 4 yards = a bust for what they are paying him.

  17. 8man says: Sep 9, 2012 6:39 PM

The Titans gave the Patriots a lot to work with today and New England didn’t take advantage of all of it.

Nonetheless, the defense looks better. Then again, last year they were the second worst in history.

Happy about Brady shaking off the banged up nose and getting it done. Hopefully, it’ll help to dispel the image of him being a flag wanting cry baby.

Room for the Patriots to improve over the next 16 weeks. No team in the NFL will give you a win.

1-0, 15 to go. One. At. A. Time.

The titans are an afterthought team in this league. Painful and boring to watch. And I’m a HUGE titans fan. They need huge improvement across the board and it starts with a productive running game and competent offensive coordinator. They should be ashamed with the effort today.

Only idiots have that image of Brady.

Well I wouldn’t call anyone an idiot I don’t personally know, but it would be hard to argue that he’s accomplished all that he has by crying.

He’s a competitor and a champion. And he’s been driven by rejection for most, if not all, of his career. He played his college ball at Michigan in the Big Ten. And back then it was a smash mouth conference. He’s tough and capable.

I still think that was a catch by Washington and a fumble recovery by Chung…Both his feet had landed and he had the ball secured but it was close and I guess I can’t be upset because they still won the game

That being said, I thought the defense looked really good and Locker made a great pass with Chandler Jones hanging onto him on the one TD the defense gave up…Nice to see Hightower score the TD and Jones was creating pressure all over the place plus Tavon Wilson had that nice pick in the end zone…Lloyd made a couple great catches and I was especially excited to see Ridley and his arsenal of moves…If he can keep that up and we can mix in an effective running game then we have something really special to watch this year…It is only one game though and now time to move on to the next one

  22. patsfiend says: Sep 10, 2012 12:18 AM

Defense looked formidable, but pass D still looks a little shaky to me.

Reminded me of Miami last year. Brady came out and was just throwing darts “thwack” “thwack!”

  23. larrydavid815 says: Sep 10, 2012 12:42 AM

I have been ripping this guy for over 2 years. He is a fraud. The gold teeth are weighing him down. What an investment. 4 yards rushing? Peyton Manning, and Aaron Hernandez had more rushing yards then him today.

Titans should take whatever loss it is and cut him.

If you are paid that kind of money, you find ways to get more yards. Peterson had 2 touchdowns on limited availability today.

4 yards? I think 99% of guys in this country made it further than 4 yards today, which includes walking from the couch to kitchen and bathroom a couple of times.

  24. bcfalcon says: Sep 10, 2012 12:42 AM

I love how everyone declared Wilson a mistake draft pick, good for him and great win for the pats. Too bad for Locker and Washington though!

  25. larrydavid815 says: Sep 10, 2012 12:46 AM

    So Titan’s fans get this:

If you take the average salary of 9,210,000 mentioned above:

    Divide by 16 games:

    $575,625 per game check

    $143,906 per yard rushed today.

    That sounds like a bargain!!!!!!!

  26. homelanddefense says: Sep 10, 2012 9:24 AM

Im not a fan of the Titans so I dont have a dog in this fight, but……

I dont think Chris Johnson left many yards on the field. The performance by the Pats front 7 completely limited any chances for him, and they will do that to a ton of teams this year. That front 7 is for real, the back 4 are still a big question though.
