Randy Moss catches his first touchdown pass in almost two years

FILE - In this Aug. 18, 2012, file photo, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss warms up before a preseason NFL football game against the Houston Texans in Houston. With all 11 defensive starters for one of the league’s best units of last year returning and the addition of several veteran playmakers in free agency, the 49ers are built not only to return to the postseason this time but reach the Super Bowl. Randy Moss has caught a touchdown pass for the 154th time in his NFL career -- and the first time since October 24, 2010.

Alex Smith hit Moss in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter of the 49ers’ game against the Packers at Lambeau Field, a touchdown catch that moved Moss ahead of Terrell Owens and into sole possession of No. 2 on the all-time receiving touchdowns list. (Moss remains 43 receiving touchdowns behind Jerry Rice.)

Moss’s last touchdown catch was also at Lambeau Field, on a pass thrown by Brett Favre as the Vikings lost to the Packers.

Although he was out of football last year and largely ineffective the year before, Moss looks solid in his debut for the 49ers. He also had a 20-yard catch earlier in the game, and he appears to be running well. San Francisco fans can only hope that Moss keeps playing like this for 16 games. Even if he’s not quite in his prime at age 35, a Randy Moss who merely resembles the Randy Moss of old would be a huge addition to the 49ers.
