With Grossman inactive, Redskins go all-rookie at quarterback

AP

The Redskins are going all-rookie at quarterback.

Veteran quarterback Rex Grossman is among the inactives for the Redskins in their opener at New Orleans, meaning that not only will Robert Griffin III start, but if Griffin goes down it will be rookie fourth-round draft pick Kirk Cousins who steps in to replace him. I can’t remember any team ever having only rookies active at quarterback at the start of a season.

Grossman’s status is a surprise, and it raises the question of why he’s on the roster at all: Why guarantee the salary of a vested veteran by having him on the 53-man roster for Week One if he’s going to be a third stringer?

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan have always like Grossman, but the fact that they’re comfortable not only with Griffin as the starter but also with Cousins as the backup shows that they like their two rookies even more.

  1. Thanks for that analysis at the end.
“but the fact that they’re comfortable not only with Griffin as the starter but also with Cousins as the backup shows that they like their two rookies even more.”

You must have pulled an all nighter to figure that out.

  2. Most NFL fans (including myself) laugh at “Train Rex” but keeping him on the roster is a smart move. He knows Kyle Shanahan’s offense better than anyone on the team through his time in Houston.

And, as crazy as it may sound, he did play in a Superbowl and is a veteran presence. He also is never in the papers for DUI or other legal issues so we can assume he isn’t a total idiot.

    HAIL!

  3. I was a little shocked as well that he made the roster. I think that Griffin and Cousins have learned all they wanna learn from him so ship him off to Arizona and get a pick for him!

  4. “Why guarantee the salary of a vested veteran by having him on the 53-man roster for Week One if he’s going to be a third stringer?”

    Because Shanahan is weird.

  5. Not too hard to figure out; Grossman is QB insurance, nothing else. If RG3 goes down, then they will likely hand the ball to Cousins, and if he can’t handle it or struggles then Grossman is an option.

With two rookies its not a bad move and worth the roster spot and money.

  6. Cousins could someday be a good NFL qb. Grossman has proven he doesn’t fit that description…. So it seems reasonable upon first glance. Not too much to analyze here.

  7. Why guarantee Rex’s pay? Maybe they didn’t know Cousins was gonna beat him out until too late? Or perhaps they aren’t too worried about his vet minimum salary to take a chance on cutting him and not having him (not that anyone’s rushing to sign Train Rex but John Beck is still in the NFL and as bad as Grossman is, he is better than Beck).

  8. Who DAT!!! That’s MY TEAM…MY QUARTERBACK. The beginning/birth of a legendary career for a special player named Robert Griffin the 3rd. Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Redskins!!! Hahahaha. We went into the “Scary old Superdome” and dropped 40 on them! They were chanting “RG3” after our last TD in the stadium where the Saints are “unbeatable”! I told everyone that RGIII was legit in the months leading up to this game and today when the games started counting, he showed all you detractors what was what!!! Alfred Morris…I said the running game would milk the clock and boy did the rookie ball out there! And our defense?! Wow. Valient…we have the best the front seven in the NFC East!!! RedskinNation it is OUR TIME. We suffered through so much embarrassment from the time Gibbs retired in 1993, but we remained loyal despite all the jokes like Shuler, George, Grossman etc…our franchise QB has arrived and the Washington Redskins are about to ascend to the elite level! Haters can’t tell me NOTHING. Hail to the Redskins and the best fan base in the world, RedskinNation!!!
