The Redskins are going all-rookie at quarterback.
Veteran quarterback Rex Grossman is among the inactives for the Redskins in their opener at New Orleans, meaning that not only will Robert Griffin III start, but if Griffin goes down it will be rookie fourth-round draft pick Kirk Cousins who steps in to replace him. I can’t remember any team ever having only rookies active at quarterback at the start of a season.
Grossman’s status is a surprise, and it raises the question of why he’s on the roster at all: Why guarantee the salary of a vested veteran by having him on the 53-man roster for Week One if he’s going to be a third stringer?
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan have always like Grossman, but the fact that they’re comfortable not only with Griffin as the starter but also with Cousins as the backup shows that they like their two rookies even more.
