On Sunday night, we told you the good news that Rams tackle Rodger Saffold appeared to escape serious injury during the Rams’ 27-23 loss to the Lions.
Saffold wound up spending the night in a Detroit hospital, but the team is encouraged by the fact that he’s alert and recovering strength in his arms and legs after a scary looking neck injury during the game. Saffold’s outlook for next week, next month and the rest of the season remains unclear, but the good news about his current condition suffices for now.
The Rams are hopeful they’ll get good news about center Scott Wells as well. Wells missed the entire second half with a foot injury, forcing the Rams to reshuffle their offensive line on the fly. Left guard Robert Turner moved to center, Wayne Hunter took over at left tackle and Rokevious Watkins came in at left guard because of the injuries and the Rams had no more backup linemen on the active roster. Their performance earned some praise from quarterback Sam Bradford.
“I thought those guys did a nice job, stepping in and playing when they had to,” Bradford said, via Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “You hate to lose two starters but you look at what we did in the fourth quarter — it was probably one of our best quarters moving the football.”
There’s no word on Wells’ prognosis at present and Saffold may wind up missing some time, which could lead the Rams to look for some more depth. They had two linemen on the inactive list Sunday, but teams can now start signing vested veterans without guaranteeing their entire salaries so they might also be looking outside the organization once they get a handle on what they have to work with on the line.
