It should have been a two possession game at the end, except for that blown protection assignment on the blocked punt. Can't blame the D for a screw-up on special teams!

Take away the blocked-punt TD, and the defense held NO to 25 points -- that's a team that averaged over 40 points at home last year!

I'd say that's a pretty respectable showing.

Nobody's putting RG3 in the HOF. I agree that we need to give both Luck and RG3 some time to see what they can really do. It is in fact only one game. But what about your claims that RG3 will in fact be a bust before ever playing even ONE game? Is that not worse?

RGIII will have a rough season because the Redskins are weak at receiver . Pierre will get shut down . Don’t get me wrong I am pulling for the rookie quarterbacks , they just are working with anything . You can only scheme so much , after that you need a Megatron .

----------------------------

the redskins arent weak at receiver. they're actually solid as long as pierre garcon plays and he says he will next week. they are very deep at receiver and TE and have backs that catch as well.

and no you dont NEED a megatron. what have the lions ever won with him? look at the teams that have won super bowls recently. their QBs turned their receivers into good ones but no megatron anywhere near the superbowl.

youre wrong on all accounts.

skins fans overreacting would be a lie.. for one, the skins have started out seasons 3-1 for many of years now, thats a great start for any team.. so we're not overreacting, we're excited we won a season opener against the new orleans saints, a team that went undefeated at home last season.. hadn't lost since 2010 in that dome. robert griffin the third walked in their cool, calm and collected and got a win. not only did he get the win, he's the first in nfl history to do what he in his debut against the saints. the redskins completely out played the saints in every aspect of the game, defense, offense.. minus the blocked punt, special teams. and to think a rookie would sustain drives the way he did, keeping drew brees and his high powered offense off the field, like tom brady said 'he's incredible'.. any real redskin fan knows we have a lot to do before we can talk playoffs.. after finishing in last place over the past years in the nfc east. redskins fans know, one game at a time.. know let's get ready for another tough st. louis team. we got a lot of football left.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The latest "incredible" rookie...

Can't wait to see him play against a real D. Sorry, Skins fans, but your receivers won't be able to run free against a team that knows what they're doing on D. The Saints played some of the worst defensive football I've seen. No pass rush, couldn't cover a bed with a blanket, LB's getting trucked on every run play. Pitiful performance by the Saints.

I was impressed by Griffin, he showed that he has adapted to the Pro game pretty quick, and he's only going to get better. I was more impressed by our defense. Yeah the score didn't show it, but they shut down the high powered Saints offense. Less then 50 yds rushing, 3 turnovers(should have been 4), and an impressive showing by the secondary, which everybody saw as the biggest flaw on the team. Also Alfred Morris was great, 100 yds and 2 tds, another great start for a rookie. But if shanahan would've let Garcon come back in, whew you were looking at 200+ yds from him

hey mojo...
the Browns did offer both of their 1's plus the 2013 but the Rams liked the 3 consecutive 1's offer more

We'll see how the year pans out. One game does not a year make.

BTW...I am from DC so I have burgundy and gold running through my veins...and yes, I know the entire lyrics to Hail to the Redskins.
Go 'Skins!

That was impressive, his poise and decision making was very veteran-like.
Having said that, the verdict should wait till the end of the season. NO defense is not really upper-echelon; would wait until he plays some good defenses like the Steelers and Cowboys.
But it definitely is an exciting start for Redskin nation

There is not a question RG3 will be franchise QB for years to come. And it proves how utterly stupid was for not being willing to give up their two #1's for him.
Not a Redskins fan, but I'm a fan of RGIII. I like his professionalism and the way he carries himself. The kid is a stud and I'm happy that he performed so well his first game. That said, he's going up against some tough defenses in the next few games so he might come back to earth a little bit as rookie. His future is bright though. The Skins got a good one.

Yes he played well in one game but lets now crown him king of the hall of fame just yet.

Once defenses have some film on him and the offense it won't be so easy for him.

I don't think the folks in STL had a choice. Bradford was drafted right before the whole rookie salary cap thing went into effect. That means he has a MONSTER contract. The contract probably makes it tough to trade him or to roster two highly paid QBs, if they drafted RG3.

@tennesseeoilers

I'd rather Griffin resemble good old Sonny Jurgensen, a true Skins ledgend, then Sunshine Joey T. But thanks for the kind words.

Sure was refreshing to see a rookie QB wearing a Skins uniform perform at a high level. I am 36 years old and I don't think that has ever happened in my lifetime. And Gus Ferrotte doesn't count.

But this was only 1 game. 1 game that the Shanahan's had a while to game plan for. With a normal work week for the Skins to prepare for the Rams, and tape of the Skins offense with Griffin at the wheel for Jeff Fisher and the Rams to study, this weeks game versus the Rams will be a good indicator as to whether Griffin can continue to contribute at this high level, or if he will come back down to earth like his fellow rookie QB's did this past week.

Should be interesting regardless, and fun for us Skins fans.

Just call me a hater. The most overused word in sports today. You sound juvenile calling someone a hater just because they don't agree with you.

I don't want to bash Griffin b/c he played a hell of a game for a Rookie, but I would like to point out a few things.
1. The Redskins just beat a team with no head coach
2. The Saints did not have their defensive captain
3. The game was played in a dome w/ good weather (much like the majority of Griffins college games were on a turf field w/ no bad weather, Fedex field has rain almost 50% of home games over the course of a season
4. Saints were playing with a new defensive coordinator
5. The Saints didn't play like the Saints, little effort, dropped passes, missed assignments
6. It was still a one possession game after putting up 40 pts. I thought the Skins were supposed to have a dominant defense?

We must give the Saints credit you can't play against someone that you don't know anything about. There is no films on RGIII. So you don't know his game the Saints face a QB with no films to study on now the next team RGIII faces will be able to study him on film. We can't be to hard on the Saints just like you in school getting ready for a test you must have something to study from so there was know film of RGIII. Next game going to be different for the Redskins because whoever they play has a film to study off of this was RGIII first NFL game no records of him. If New Orleans Saints has to face them for the second time they will beat them, Saints should have win Sunday game but there were to many errors it's still in the season.

The kid is very good. I'm not even talking about his stats in game 1... he has poise, a cannon arm, and most importantly he is SMART.

To the people saying "this is one game"; I have a feeling next week you will be saying "it's only two games".... and so on.... he IS as good as advertised, PERIOD.

I know a lot of NFL fans don't really follow college ball. But watching RGIII last year it was clear he was a man among boys, world-class talent AND an excellent, professional attitude and work ethic. He put on some displays at Baylor that were just otherworldly, haven't seen anyone in his class since Vick at VT and RGIII comes with none of Vick's immaturity and baggage. He's no Tebow, he will excel in the NFL.
