Report: Terrell Thomas had ACL surgery

The news keeps getting worse for Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas.

After missing all of last season with a torn ACL, his second, suffered in training camp, Thomas was able to start practicing with the team again when they gathered for camp this summer. He only lasted a few days before his knee was injured again. Initial reports were that he merely aggravated the injury and could rehab it without needing surgery. That proved to be a bust as Thomas was placed on injured reserve when the Giants made their cuts to 53 players and now it seems Thomas needs another knee operation.

Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Thomas had an operation this week to repair a partially torn ACL. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida after a scope of the knee revealed the extent of the injury. Vrentas’ source told her that the recovery time for this surgery is ideally six months.

The surgery won’t make it much more difficult for Thomas to find work next year, but only because he was already a massive risk because of the repeated injuries. Thomas will almost certainly become a free agent after this season because the Giants hold an option on the remaining three years of his deal. That deal is worth up to $26 million, money that Thomas won’t be seeing after losing another season to a knee injury. Any team that wants to sign him won’t be offering much more than the minimum and a chance to revive a once-promising career.
