Charles Woodson: We don’t need luck, Jay will throw us the ball

Chicago Bears quarterback Cutler talks with Green Bay Packers cornerback Woodson late in the second half during their NFL football game in Green Bay, Wisconsin Reuters

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s decision to wish the Packers secondary good luck came back to bite him and his team on the rear end Thursday night.

Cutler had an awful night, completing just 11 of his 27 passes while getting intercepted four times and sacked seven times by a Packers defense that showed a lot more bite than they did in the season opener. Cutler got caught on camera yelling at offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb, a flashback to past seasons when protection breakdowns led to offensive breakdowns that sank the Bears’ hopes.

Things were supposed to be different this season, which led to Cutler’s comments to the Packers defensive backs. The Pack got their revenge on the field and then safety Charles Woodson, who had one of the picks, made sure that Cutler knew that Green Bay didn’t think things had changed even a little bit.

“Heard some talk out of the Bears: Packers secondary not working coverage, bigger receivers … we heard about it,” Woodson told Rachel Nichols of ESPN. “We understand that Jay is excited about his new weapons, but it’s the same-old Jay. We don’t need luck; Jay will throw us the ball.”

That, my friends, qualifies as a burn. Probably third degree.

Cutler and Woodson had words after a play in the second half, Cutler seemed to take exception to Woodson trying to tackle him low, and had to be separated on the field. The two teams will meet again in Week 15 and Woodson might be the one wishing him luck that time around.

The truth hurts. When are people going to realize that it takes more than a strong arm to play QB?

Look at the difference in QBs last night…..one is a leader, one is a baby. Guess which one has a ring??

  5. voiceofreasonsays says: Sep 14, 2012 11:26 AM

DeAngelo Hall feels the same way. I will never take the Bear seriously again…they really are who we thought they were. I guess we should expect any who plays vs Andrew Couch to look good.

What a classless comment from someone whom I thought was a professional athlete.

Not cool, Woodson. Especially considering how dirty your team played that night. One play, Clay Matthews damn near took Webb’s eyes out. It was in mid-3rd quarter.

  8. hehateme2 says: Sep 14, 2012 11:26 AM

Cutler looks worst than rookie Tannehill… at least he didn’t give up all those sacks.

And Brandon Marshall looks back to form with dropping TDs. How long before he starts punting the ball?

  9. truthfactory says: Sep 14, 2012 11:27 AM

The line played bad, but even on plays where the line held up, he still held on to the ball too long or ended up making a terrible pass anyways.

The oline deserves much of the blame, but that was a tight low scoring game and Cutler didnt help his team by recklessling throwing into double coverages.

Someone should tell Cutler that everytime he points his finger, theres 3 more pointing right back at him…

For years us in the Denver area have been telling you what a pathetic, whiny little brat Cutler is.

    You’ve downvoted us.

Get this straight. Cutler is NOT a leader. He’s a talented QB who’s great when things are going good and TRASH when things go bad.

He’s got the heart of a jellyfish. He’s not elite, He will NEVER be elite.

How many idiotic “Of course my arm is stronger than Elway’s” comments does this low charachter swine have to make before you people get that?

Jay Cutler is not the type of QB most players want leading their offense in the NFL. He always places blame on other teammates and never himself. He never takes into account about how as a QB he is called upon to lead by example both in the huddle and on the sideline. Instead, he whines about the problems and his team loses football games. Denver recognized it and let him go and now he’s doing the same thing in Chicago.

  29. taintedsaints2009 says: Sep 14, 2012 11:48 AM

I love this. From both Cutler and Woodson. It what these guys are – they’re people just like everyone else. People who are willing to show their swagger, and remind one another when they get burned. It’s great.

In a world of PC answers and athletes being expected to be monotone, its nice to see these guys jaw a bit.

New city, same Marshall. His drops have become more than just a bad habit, they define who he is at this point. You have to hand it to him though. Seriously. Don’t throw it his way, you have to hand it to him or he’ll drop it.

  32. shivakaminisomakandarkram says: Sep 14, 2012 11:53 AM

the packs first 3 pts was a result of a blown 12 men on field call, their next 7pts was a trick play on special teams and the next 3 came after briggs dropped an easy pick. Ton of credit to the packers defense for harassing jay all night and forcing bad throws but as a bears fan im looking forward to the next meeting and hoping those few key plays bounce in our favor

  33. mullman76 says: Sep 14, 2012 11:53 AM

But the pack have the worst secondary in the nfl – other fans after Alex Smith had a very efficient game. Guess they aren’t that terrible huh? Maybe next time Cutler wont kick the bull in the ass before the rodeo. And don’t even try to just pin it on Cutler either. Packers defenders made some very dynamic plays

  36. puresickness12 says: Sep 14, 2012 11:56 AM

Brandon Marshall rarely got separation from Green Bay’s defensive backs. Cutler rarely got separation from Clay Matthews.

  37. suheveryone says: Sep 14, 2012 11:56 AM

What Woodson fails to recognize is that it didn’t really have much to do with the Packers secondary being good (they’re not) it had everything to do with how terrible the Bears offensive line is.
I wouldn’t feel real awesome about this win if I were a Packers fan. They actually looked pretty awful until sometime in the 3rd quarter.
After Detroit beats San Fran on Sunday night you can all bow down to the undisputed kings of the division.

BTW.. my wife’s family are bears fans so i support them as long as they are not playing the niners..

  40. kev86 says: Sep 14, 2012 12:00 PM

As a Giants fan my favorite Woodson memory will be of him gettting run over in the 07 NFC Championship Game by Brandon Jacobs however he summed up last night nicely with the above quote.

He’s also a hall of famer.

    Chi-town o-line is swiss cheese.

Both teams looked very beatable but I only watched until mid 3rd quarter.

Bears looked terrible and Packers had a lot of drops and looked decent but not great.

My guess would be the packers will be left standing atop the division come December but we have a long way to go.

  41. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Sep 14, 2012 12:01 PM

  42. bws2390 says: Sep 14, 2012 12:01 PM

  43. bougin89 says: Sep 14, 2012 12:03 PM

It’s actually perfect that Woodson and Cutler are both taking jabs at each other… Cutler with his “good luck” comment earlier in the week and Woodson with his post game interview.

One is a true leader and winner who plays all-out every game. He walked the walk and then talked the talk.

One is a talented but gutless player that no one has ever mistaken for a leader. He talked and played horrendous.

I’m going to end this post with what I’ve been saying on these boards all week… just like all week when everyone counted us out and I defended the Pack, it’s early in the season and the Bears’ season is far from over after only 1 loss.

  44. 34sweetness says: Sep 14, 2012 12:04 PM

Cutler’s original comment was about press coverage.

“We’ve got some dudes that, if you’re gonna get up in their face, even our speed guys are gonna get around them, and our big guys are gonna throw and go,” Cutler said. “So we invite press coverage. We invite man (coverage). If we get that type of game, our guys outside have to make some plays for us.”

Tha Packers didn’t play much press coverage or man coverage, of any at all. It all about context people.

  45. purpleguy says: Sep 14, 2012 12:04 PM

I loved that quote — good for Woodson for saying what he thought rather than politically correct blather. It was the most entertaining part of an otherwise boring game (if you aren’t a cheeser that is).

I think every QB in the game would love to have as much time to throw as Cutler had last night. The offensive line can’t hold them forever. I know there was more than a couple of times that he had at least 5 seconds or better and still held the ball and got sacked. Why was there no 5-yd slants, or short screens. Seems like every time he went back to throw there was at least 10 yards of empty real estate in front of him. Aaron Rogers wasn’t too proud to throw the little 5 yd dink passes. Complete enough of the 5 yd stuff and the safeties and dbs will start playing closer instead of dropping back.

  68. ihaterogergoodell says: Sep 14, 2012 12:37 PM

I preface this all by saying I am a Bears fan.

I respect the Green Bay Packers. They OWN us right now. We are out-coached, out-gunned, and out-defended. The special teams touchdown was a thing of beauty (like our kick return last year), and I look forward to seeing the ST chess match continue between the two!

I will say that I am very disappointed in both the media and many Green Bay fans. To play the victim of Cutler’s comments is absolutely stupid and frustrating as a fan of sports in general. Cutler did not single out any unit, he simply said with his new teammates, they feel they have an advantaged being pressed at the line. How is that inflammatory? I’ll admit Cutler is not the greatest speaker or politician (look how he was a jerk with Webb), but he did not go as far as to insult Woodson, Bush, etc. I always liked Charles Woodson, but not so much now. He needs to shut his mouth and win humbly. Funny how GB fans that cry about Cutler’s “diss” are applauding Woodson’s!

Congrats to the Packers! I’m very disappointed in this Bears loss, but the better team won. I only wish the mouth-breathing trolls didn’t come out so often and give real Packer fans a bad name.

Let me preface this by stating that I an NOT a Bears or Packers fan.

To the Packers fans though, let’s be very clear on something:
    1. The Bears O-Line is a joke and would give up 5+ sacks to Miami.
    2. Only 2 of those INT’s were created by your secondary – the two by Tramon Williams. The Woodson INT was due to Bennett not doing his job and waiting on the ball until the world ended, and the McMillian INT hit the ground.
    3. There were at least 3 plays where coverages were blown wide open, however Cutler had his head buried in his own a** and didn’t see wide open receivers (see Alshon Jeffries on 3rd down w/ 11 min left in 4th).

So is your D miraculously cured, NO. But they did appear improved.

    That said, nice fake FG.

I have a friend who lives in Chicago so i get updates on their fans all the time.. pretty easy to figure out who they are on here..
ironic how you are not bashing Cutler for opening his mouth ( he started it all) but complaining about Woodson calling him out… lets face it, CW is far more accompolished and in a better position career wise to talk trash (which he usually doesnt).

It reminds me of a Bears fan who recently posted trash about Mario WIlliams signing with Buffalo and i get it, why would you sign here, but he said he was passing up championships in CHicago hahahahhaha… most dillusional fans in NFL

Im right here. It kinda helps when cutler throws up lollipops for your defense to intercept it 4 times. play a team with a real QB and see if you can match it or do better. Doubtful with that D. By the way, how many times do you expect your special teams to bail out that offense?

Bad move by mocking Cutler and the Bears…

I’m only going to say this once. As soon as Cutler and his Weapons find a rhythm and get in sync, watch out. Between their Offense and Defense, I can see the Bears winning their Division and strutting right to the Superbowl. This is just the second game, sometimes It takes 3-4 weeks before a team gets into its real stride. All I’m saying is not to count them out of the picture yet, there is still a long way to go.

What Woodson fails to recognize is that it didn’t really have much to do with the Packers secondary being good (they’re not) it had everything to do with how terrible the Bears offensive line is.

    ————————————–

Woodson didn’t say it was the secondary being good, he just said they didn’t need luck with the QB was throwing it to them. If you want to get technical, the Pack secondary looked like Carlos Rogers in a Redskin uniform – you know dropping interceptions that hit them in the hands.

Personally, I like that Cutler was trying to talk because he believed in his unit, however when you talk, you need to back it up.

Now – Woodson, I liked him before, I love him now. I mean really, that comment was priceless.

  90. robgilman says: Sep 14, 2012 2:50 PM

Cutler kind of “kicked” Woodson after that play where he put pressure on him. He more nudged him with his leg, which is definitely not quite like a stomp but enough to really tick off Woodson. I got a kick out of. Charles got in Cutlers face after he did that and obviously held a grudge for the rest of the game, as his post game comment shows.

    Cutler definitely got burned haha

  91. lionsdraftguy says: Sep 14, 2012 3:02 PM

As a Lions fan, I hate to defend the dickheads, which are the Bears and their fans. BUT, their O-line played atrociously. Worst pass protection I’ve ever seen. But Cutler proved once again hes a me first guy and not a team player.

Theres one thing Cutler and Jim Harbaugh have in common, they are both whiny little girls.

And to add to this. Remember how Cutler needed the refs to call a BS roughing the QB on Suh 2 years ago to get a win? Looks like he can have that call this year, cuz he aint gonna take advantage of it anyway.

And before you get ahead of yourself. Green Bay won the Division going away last you, have won the last 5 head to head matchups including punking the Bears on their own field for the 2010 NFC Championship game on their way to a championship – I think the Packers can do all the mocking they want to when it comes to the Bears these days.

The Packers, Bears, and Lions (even though the Lions fans are a little over the top since I can’t remember them beating a winning team in my lifetime) all have good enough teams to have a solid shot at the playoffs but what are all the Vikings fans commenting on?

You guys beat the Jaguars in a game that you shouldn’t have even won. At home nonetheless. The Jaguars. Why are you on here puffing your chests? It’s very reminiscent of the Bears fans who didn’t shut up for three days after beating the Colts. Do you guys now realize there is a big difference between playing teams like the Jags and Colts vs. playing the big boys?

Why should he have taken ‘the high road.’ Does this make Woodson a bad person? I haven’t like Woodson since his days at Michigan(since I am a MSU fan), but think this is great! Woodson did absolutely nothing wrong here and is just having fun. You mean sports is about having fun? I’M SHOCKED!!!

It is just you! I doubt it’s even possible to intentionally do that. Dirty players try to hurt people. Woodson has been accused many times of using to much contact in pass coverage. Not a Bears fan or a Packers fan….but a huge football fan. I know the Packers “won convincingly” last night, but I’m thinking McCarthy and Co. may have some concerns. Most Packer fans will not consider anything that is negative about their team but this isn’t meant as trash talk. Two home games and the Packer offense has scored ONE TD! Aaron Rodgers accuracy has not been what we have seen in the past. Rodgers was sacked 5 times last nite, I’m seeing all kinds of problems with that Packer offensive line. Before the season started, who would’ve bet any money on the Packers offense only scoring one touchdown after two home games!!! Can’t ignore the offensive question marks. Ok, now I will end with a little sarcasam……After a putrid season last year, kinda ironic that Clay Matthews seems to be stronger again this year and much faster……is the dude back on the juice??????????? I think ANY player that suddenly and dramatically improves their performance should be automatically tested…..I don’t care what team they play for.

Gotta love these kids these days, dreaming big and all…

After San Fran knocks Matty “Glass Arm” Stafford out for 6 to 8 weeks in the first quarter, you can log in late on Sunday night and explain to us how the kings are going to keep the throne they never had. Smith is another injury prone RB and wouldn’t be shocked to see him knocked silly too.

Stafford threw 4 picks last week against a TERRIBLE team. My guess is if the Lions score more than 10 points, it will be in garbage time or by the DEF or S/T.

  104. teal379 says: Sep 14, 2012 5:18 PM

Lots of excuse making for Cutler. Saying that’s a horrible O-line.

Might I remind you that the Packers had/have the worst pass defense in NFL HISTORY? They had ZERO pass rush all year.

The reason the O-line gets steamrollered is because no one’s really scared of Jay’s decision making. Why should they? He’s thrown 2x as many INTs against GB as TDs so there’s little threat in pinning your ears back and trying to destroy the QB.

  105. zn0rseman says: Sep 14, 2012 5:27 PM

    Not a Bear or Pack fan… but…

That was a late and low hit by Woodson which looked very dirty. I don’t blame Cutler for being angry about that. But then afterwards, Woodson hit Culter in the head with a slap. that should have resulted in a 15 yarder, if not an ejection. The late/low hit on Cutler also should have been 15 yards. The ref was right there for both of those.

Clay Mathews is roided out big time. Not sure how he is passing his drug tests but nobody can convince me that his build or antics are natural.

  106. bfrsd says: Sep 14, 2012 5:59 PM

I don’t know if Matthews is on roids or not. I would guess that he’s probably on something that can’t be tested for along with 90% of the league. That’s how it works. I don’t agree with it but to single it out is ridiculous. That’s like the Bonds vs. Clemens era. The pitchers and the hitters were on ped’s so you can’t attack just one person.

With all that said, ignorant fans look directly at numbers and if they don’t watch the actual games they come to blind conclusions. Everyone says that Clay was bad last season. He had 13.5 sacks in 10′ and only 6 last year but that doesn’t tell the whole story. He actually had more overall pressures and hurries last season than he did in 10′ with more sacks and he was double and triple teamed every game.

The Packers are one key injury (Jordy Nelson, for example) from duking it out for last place in the division with the Vikings. The Bears, otoh, will have to beat the Rams and then beat Dallas in Dallas to show that they really have their sh*t together.
