Matthews was a late bloomer. He didn’t even start full time at USC until his senior year. He didn’t even have a draftable grade before his senior season.

He flourished with 10.5 sacks and posted great workout numbers. Talent was never the issue, he was stuck in a logjam of other good USC LB’s at that time.

Not surprised he’s among the elite of defensive players in the league. I liked him more than Brian Cushing in the ’09 draft. Great bloodlines and has a nonstop motor.

I think it is poor sportsmanship.

And yet – as someone said he was only responsible for drawing 2 holding calls all last year.

Weird….

Oh and by the way the packers did not beat the bears the bears beat them self.

A defensive touchdown in each of his first 3 seasons thus far, but all he does is rush the passer.

Forced game sealing fumble in SB XLV, all he does is rush the passer.

C0nsistently chases down running plays from the backside, all he does is rush the passer.

I love when fans on here try to talk about teams and players they dont ALWAYS watch, you know nothing. And to the guy who said Clay needs to be more consistent like Jared Allen, because clay had 6 sacks last year. Hey pal, Allen only had 7.5 sacks his third year in the league. Again, do not talk about what you do not know about.

I mean really if the Bears just would have ran and dinked/dunked the game would have been close. If you want to take a shot with Marshall, just put in some extra protection and throw a jump ball.

Whether or not Mathews is held on other plays is moot. The point is that he fakes & flails & acts & gyrates to draw flags. His breck-girl hair flaps back, and to the front, back and to the front, and make it looks like he has been clotheslined.

No one recognizes it as a clearly a repeated ploy by him to draw holding calls. He does it when he is blocked, not when he is free.

It’s kind of innovative and devious. That said, I have never seen any D-linemen do this. The closest thing to it in the NFL is when the punter spins around to draw a roughing-the-kicker. But punters are not real players.

I think it is poor sportsmanship.

and boom, clay matthews is putting up big numbers again.

last year, the league gets serious about possibly testing for HGH, so, matthews has a terrible year.

coincidence? nope. the guy knows how to beat the NFL testing system. just like probably 75% of the league.

It is extremely clear you did not watch the packers play last year. Clay was the only one getting pressure last year. Last year physically he looked just as good as ever but teams could focus solely on him. Capers did not blitz last year like he has early this year and last night a few of Matthews sacks were helped by other players getting pressure.

Plus, how would roids help, I think Tony Mandraich and Vernon Golston proved that technique and understanding of the game helps more than pure strength/roid strength

Clay Matthews is an exceptional talent with deep roots in the game of football. He’s a player you all wish you had on your garbage football team.

When you combine his sacks with his unique ability of faking like he is being held, then you have a real force.

Mathews draws at least one bogus holding call a game by jerking his head backwards and flailing his arms in the air so as to be appear if he was held. -

Have you ever played on the offensive or defensive line? I was an O-lineman, and can tell you that a guy like Clay Matthews really is held on every play, unless he drops into coverage. Part of the beauty of playing O line is holding without it looking like holding. Clay may look like he is flopping, but he really is held on most plays. If he weren’t held, he would likely get 6 sacks per game… especially against guys like Webb. He was completely overmatched.

Anyway, he’s had a great couple of games so far and has really kept the pedal to the metal. This game Capers sent him crashing into the line play after play; other times he drops back and covers as well as any OLB in the league. He’s a pretty complete player.
