49ers look good, but Lions stay within kicking distance early

The 49ers defense isn’t giving up much.

But a familiar problem is keeping the Lions close.

The 49ers had a dominant opening sequence, following a three-and-out on defense with a crisp touchdown drive capped by a Vernon Davis touchdown grab, but it’s now 7-6 midway through the first.

The Lions took advantage of Kendall Hunter’s fumbled kickoff return for a short field and a second Jason Hanson field goal.

Special teams turnovers are going to haunt the 49ers until they make them go away, whether Jim Harbaugh wants to talk about them or not.
