Vinatieri takes down Vikings with 53-yard field goal

Adam Vinatieri Pat McAfee AP

Last year, the Vikings spent the early weeks of the season blowing late leads.  This year, the Vikings are spending the early weeks of the season erasing late deficits.

This week, however, they left too much time on the clock for Andrew Luck.

After a six-yard touchdown pass from Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder to tight end Kyle Rudolph, the Colts drove 45 yards on four plays in 23 seconds, and Vinatieri delivered on a 53-yard game winner.

It’s the first career win for Andrew Luck, who completed 20 of 31 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns.  But the Colts’ offense went in to a coma after building a 20-6 lead, and the Vikings scored two touchdowns in less than five minutes to tied the game.

Both teams are now 1-1.  If the Lions lose to the 49ers tonight, the NFC North will have four 1-1 teams.

    Ugly game for the Vikes.

They can’t rely on Harvin for everything!

Penalties definitely killed it. They need to be more disciplined!

Even with all that, Vikings nor its fans will say “they didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves” because on spineless moronic fan bases pull that card.

It will be interesting to see how the Vikings screw up the first pick in the draft next year.

  5. mediasloppy says: Sep 16, 2012 4:25 PM

I need to know why there was so much time after Luck spiked the ball. The field goal unit came on late and the play clock ran out LONG before the field goal kick???

Vikings didn’t deserve to win. No discipline or clock management,,, Colts not good though, sloppy game. Feel bad for Percy, kid played his heart out,,,

This loss is on the coaches.

Might as well rename them the Minnesota Harvins

Contra, Harvin, and Thankheaven deserve this terrible team.

Musgrave needs to get up in the booth & off the sidelines. Someone needs to coach Ponder on how to manage the clock. New year same ole Vikings defense. The secondary is awful. Giving up chunks of yards in seconds. I mean it’s the same thing every single season. Jared Allen is back to his form 2 seasons back when he was quite frankly not there at times. I feel this is a win/win season because if the Vikings do well then Spielman is justified in choosing Ponder and his draft picks. If the Vikings do bad then they can get rid of Spielman, Frazier & Musgrave and hire coaches who can coach & teach & light a fire under the Vikings D. Teams do not even need to run against the Vikings because they proved even when they know the pass is coming they can’t stop it. Like the Patriots did a few years back & the Saints last year. Just pass every down because the Vikings can’t stop the pass, at all.

As a fan of an NFC North team not called the Lions, I think I speak for many of us – Packers and Vikings and Bears, oh my! – when I say…Go Niners!

Whoop di do. Barely beat a team lead by Christian Ponder. Not impressed.

Luck’s not that great but Minnesota’s D is just plain bad.

  16. vikesfanforlife says: Sep 16, 2012 4:49 PM

as a Vikings fan, this was a tough loss against an opponent that they should have beaten. The Vikings really need to continue to build the Defense through the draft. the secondary is still awful. The silver lining in all of this is that through 2 weeks, Christian Ponder has thrown for over 500 yds with 2 tds, no interceptions, and is completing over 70% of his passes. I believe we really have found our franchise qb. That being said, he does need to cut down on the fumbles. Realistically, the Vikes are 2 years from competing for a division title

  17. cags777 says: Sep 16, 2012 4:49 PM

Too many mental errors from our defense. Coaches not emphasizing tough, disciplinary football. No excuses for this loss today. Tough loss for this fan to swallow.

  18. pack13queens0 says: Sep 16, 2012 4:50 PM

Luck’s no A-Rod but you don’t need to be when you play such a bad team. San Francisco is going to win by at least 30 next week.

  19. barroomhero80 says: Sep 16, 2012 5:04 PM

No pass D. No receivers besides harvin. And worthless penalties. Sucks to be a fan right now

  20. larryboodry says: Sep 16, 2012 5:28 PM

And why go on a Vikings vs. Colts thread to talk trash on the Bears?

  21. vikingboy26 says: Sep 16, 2012 7:46 PM

This loss is squarely on the Vikings D. You cannot let another team go 45 yards in 23 seconds to win the game. If Allen cannot get to the QB, the blitz a LB. Greenway, you need to play better in pass D. Winfield needs to return to the nickel and not get smoked by a faster, younger guy on the outside. These things are all correctable, but it stinks to lose a winable game.

Question – did the rule regarding stopped clocks when stepping out of bounds change? I think Harvin stepped out of bounds and the clock kept running. What happened? It was around the 8 minutes left to go mark.

Get over your obsession with the 13 time world champion Green Bay Packers already.

You can look it up. Right now it seems like you’re trying to find excuses… typical.

  26. brewdogg says: Sep 16, 2012 11:05 PM

Let’s be honest….when they went three and out on their last series in the first half and gave the Colts the oppurtunity to get that TD before the half, the game was pretty much over at that point. There was no excuse for that sequence. In that circumstance, you never, EVER, let the opposing team have the ball back. That’s coaching 101. Don’t let your opponent take that kind of momentum into the locker room.

And then they made it worse by giving the Colts two second chances on the next drive. Brilliant. They weren’t outplayed so much as they out-dumned the Colts.

  27. dtrb10 says: Sep 16, 2012 11:47 PM

Maybe when the season is over now that they got the stadium approved, they will get a real front office and coaching staff.

  28. randyratio says: Sep 17, 2012 1:17 AM

Ponder threw an awful lot of screen passes this game. I think he needs some bifocals that way he can see their are receivers more then 15 yards down field.

Seriously he threw the ball over 15 yards what? Maybe 4 times all game. I also realize that’s probably Bill Musgrave’s doing. So Bill, I suggest you take out your shiny new toy Jon Carlson out of the box and utilize him. After all he was one of our free agent splashes and you know you love to use your TE’s

Fraiser you may want to start updating your resume. This may have been one of like 5 winnable games for you this year. After seeing the rams offense today and the Cardinals winning in New England. I’m not so sure the Vikes can even match last season’s win total.

Fact check: Ponder has the highest completion percentage in the league and is 7th in QB Rating.

It didn’t take long for Green Bay to be back in first place, did it Contra? I hope you enjoyed your abbreviated SuperBowl run….last week.

  32. purpleguy says: Sep 17, 2012 11:45 AM

This is what your gonna get with a young team folks. It’s hard to trash the HC and the QB when the personnel is lacking talent and/or experience. If anyone expected anything else this year, they’ve been drinking too much pabst with the cheesers.

We are a growing team, only going only to get better. Got a mean LT,AD, kicker extraordinaire, QB growing up before our eyes, and the best player in the NFL,Percy Harvin. Add a stud receiver,a nice CB and LB and a coach,,,we’ll be on top once again!!

  35. bleedinpurple says: Sep 17, 2012 1:01 PM

I’m not saying it’s time to panic, but where was the energy against the Colts?! We were down two TDs in the last part of the game and we were still huddling and going as slow as possible.

I wish we had a real coach that could really light a fire under our team..Sick of these wishy washy guys like Childress and Frazier.

  36. vikesfansteve says: Sep 17, 2012 2:03 PM

The clock doesn’t stop when going out of bounds until 2 minutes left Contra. It stops until the ball is placed & then the refs start it running again. New rule.

  37. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Sep 17, 2012 2:11 PM

Apparently, I can’t say that Ponder said that the vikings beat themselves, even though Ponder said it….

Thanks for stating the new rule. I was unaware but it is what it is.

For the record, regardless of that rule, the Vikings got beat by the Colts. Not looking for excuses like other teams/fanbases we all know.

  39. ponderingfuture says: Sep 17, 2012 10:54 PM

Can anyone explain why the colts did did not get a delay of game penalty at the game that would have pushed them back to a 58 yard field goal??? The clock was clearly at 00. And vinatieri kicked it 5 seconds later. I even went back and counted the seconds to make sure clock was right.

I’m confused, too. Are we rolling with “we beat ourselves” or “the refs stole the game from us?”
