Although Rams coach Jeff Fisher has been nominated for the Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year award from the American Mustache Institute, it’s Eagles coach Andy Reid who has the NFL’s most imposing mustache. And now Reid has explained why.
Reid told Peter King of Sports Illustrated that he has stopped trimming his mustache after the death of his high school offensive line coach, Andy Cheschelski. Reid said that both Cheschelski and another of his high school coaches, Danny Hime, had major mustaches, and when Cheschelski died this year, Reid told Hime he wanted to use his mustache to pay tribute to his coaches.
“Those guys have been watching over me since I was a kid, and I really appreciate all they’ve done for me in my life,” Reid told King. “My wife doesn’t even know why I’m doing this. I just thought it would be a good way to honor them.”
For a mustached man to have a mustache grown in his memory is a high honor indeed.
