APKellen Winslow didn’t need long to get ready to play for the Patriots.
Winslow, the tight end who signed with New England on Tuesday, will be active for tonight’s game against the Ravens, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said this week that the coaching staff gave Winslow a crash course and got him at least comfortable enough that he knows what he’s supposed to do on a handful of plays that the Patriots could call when he’s in the game.
“We try to prioritize what the person needs as a foundation and then what the person needs to go out and be able to play in the game in the role that we would ask them to play in,” Belichick said.
The ankle injury that tight end Aaron Hernandez suffered last week left the Patriots suddenly scrambling to find help at a position at which they were the deepest team in the league. Bringing in Winslow — and having him ready to go after just five days — could go a long way toward alleviating the problems that the absence of Hernandez caused in last Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.
