Andy Reid: “Michael Vick is our quarterback. Period.”

Philadelphia Eagles v Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

Eagles coach Andy Reid stirred up some waters earlier on Monday when he was asked about whether he gave any thought to making a change at quarterback.

“Right now, we’re with Michael and that’s what we’re doing,” Reid said. “We’ll evaluate it as we go.”

There was plenty of wiggle room to move any way you want to go in that answer, something that can fan the flames of a quarterback controversy mighty quick. Reid seems to want to avoid such waters. He revisited the question during his weekly radio show on WIP in Philadelphia on Monday afternoon and gave a firmer assessment of the quarterback situation in Philadelphia.

“Michael is our quarterback. Period. Michael is our quarterback,” Reid said, via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. “Listen, does he need to get better? Do we all need to get better? Yes.”

That should quiet things right down.

What we can tell from Reid’s two answers is that Vick will be the starting quarterback against the Giants on Sunday night. Beyond that, anything remains possible. He’ll probably be their starter after that, although nothing Reid said in his second pass at things makes it impossible that a change will come down the road.

After all, throwing six interceptions in your first three weeks has a way of making people say “Michael is our quarterback. Question mark.”

The good news for Reid is that Vick will get hurt at some point in the following 3-4 weeks so he can make a QB change without having to bench him.

Reid is doing the right thing. I know all the overexcited fans saw Foles do well against nothing defenses in the preseason and are ready to throw Vick to the wolves (a yearly event in Philadelphia), but benching Vick signals that you’re giving up on the season. You’re 2-1 and playing your division rival this week. If you win, it’s all good.

  25. bangitfootball says: Sep 24, 2012 6:35 PM

Michael Vick, Chris Johnson and DeSean Jackson all ridiculously overpaid and overrated for years. The first two should be benched and if their coaches cant see that they need to find a new profession. Even through ownership was stupid enough to overpay these guys millions its time to pull the plug.

  26. wtfredskinsftw says: Sep 24, 2012 6:44 PM

    6 Int’s in 6 weeks?¿?¿
6 Int’s in 3 weeks is what you mean to say and it’s bad but Vick is the best you’ve got. Look at the upside when Vick play good he can win games no doubt. Andy Reed won’t have to bench Vick because he never makes it a full season and if the backup plays well enough then that will be the real hard spot to be in.

If Reid and Vick thought they had problems in Glendale, the Giants can put this passing-down defense on them Sunday night:

    DE: Tuck and Osi
    DT: JPP and Kiwi
    OLB: Williams and Boley
    MLB: Blackburn

Possibly the fastest collective front 7 in the NFL. If Vick doesn’t get the ball out of his hands on his first read, he may have to spend the night in the whirlpool.

This is going to be good, so many things to watch.

  51. geniusfan says: Sep 24, 2012 9:01 PM

Sometimes I half think that Reid and Mornhinweg call these awful long developing pass plays so Vick gets walloped and injured.

Maybe Reid in his desperation will try to sell to Lurie that he needs a few years with Foles. I hope I’m wrong, but if the Eagles don’t right the ship quickly starting by beating the Giants this Sunday Night then I wouldn’t put it past Reid to try this.

  52. 2ndaryinsanity says: Sep 24, 2012 9:01 PM

Sounds great, except Reid is a proven liar regarding who will be the Eagles QB. Be afraid, Vick…be very afraid!

  53. kspells12345 says: Sep 24, 2012 9:15 PM

    @ dogloverssuck

A less mobile QB that’s a legitimate 6’6″ would most likely be able to recognize pressure and get rid of the ball quicker and not make basic mistakes like throwing the ball against your body.

  54. backindasaddle says: Sep 24, 2012 9:37 PM

Vick has reverted back to his mental laziness and less than 100% commitment to his trade just like he was in Atlanta. I find it very telling that he has that one great year. It was a year when he had to prove himself to be able to re-establish his career. Now that he’s re-established…back to the mental laziness and lesser commitment to his game. Vick is not driven like a Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to be the best they can be. Vick has always been able excel based on his raw athletic ability and as such it has always enabled him to be less than 100% committed in the mental aspect of the game. Besides, I’m not sure Vick will even make it to mid-season with the way he exposes himself to getting leveled with big hits.

  55. genevalove says: Sep 24, 2012 10:54 PM

Just like when he was in atlanta.overpaid, overrated, and unwilling or unable to learn.never could read a defense, always wanted to be the “$tar”, ended up being the whiniest, always injured fool in the nfl.

With all of the Reid family troubles, Vick’s past and other issues, it’s like we are watching a slow moving train wreck.

The finale with the Eagles firing Reid and starting all over again from scratch. Vick becoming a back up, mostly to sell tickets, and the talents of Jackson and McCoy wasted

“2-1 is a whole lot better than 0-3 & 1-2.” Both of which are records that the Eagles should more likely have. The refs were so busy trying to decide if Vick fumbled or passed at the end of the game this week that they forgot that, whatever he was doing, he was doing it to avoid a sack. It should have been intentional grounding.

  61. dlightner13 says: Sep 25, 2012 10:09 AM

throwing a ball away to avoid a sack is not intentional grounding… he was not going down when he threw it away. but not throwing it passed the line of scrimmage is…which is what he was called on. this was the one good call the refs have made this year…

  62. bleedgreen11 says: Sep 26, 2012 12:54 AM

I’ve been a long time supporter of Andy Reid but he really needs to pack his bags and take his quarterback with him.

The reason Mike Vick gets hit so much is because he is indecisive, and just holds onto the ball back there. You see him just standing back there and then he tries to be a super hero on every play and manages to screw up royally. Even in preseason when he played he was getting smashed around… That wasn’t happening to Nick Foles. He was well protected, because he didn’t take 7 seconds to throw a dumpoff pass to McCoy or Celek, or more commonly, the linebackers.

  63. oldbyrd says: Sep 26, 2012 10:24 AM

It appears to be reaching a point where we must consider getting Foles involved for the future. If Vic can”t get the ball out quicker its going to be a long season. I was timing Kolb”s release time and its far far better than Vic’s. Not to mention recognition. Vic just doesn’t read (Reid) well.
