You’re absolutely right that coaches have been telling these players “the second guy always get the foul,” since they were six, and it is the player’s job to behave like a professional.

However, if the refs were more competent, the “first guy” wouldn’t feel as free to take his shot on the proverbial “second guy” and fewer “second guys” would have to restrain their emotions and not respond.

It’s like leaving a carton of matches in a class full of third graders: sure, they should know not to play with the matches; but if the school goes up in flames, who’s really at fault?

So what you’re saying is that the league should have a team of officials on the bench to relieve these officials from botching another game? That’s such a good idea they should implement that with the regular officials when they come back! (sarcasm included)

People keep bashing the league for not “paying up” to get the regular officials back. But the refs are fighting all negotiating points, including:

-Having a full-time crew who can make it their sole priority to be the best refs they can be year-round

-The hinted-at idea above about having an extra crew who can step in when another crew’s performance starts slipping

-Refusing to switch off their pension plan (I partially blame the refs on this one). They work part-time- some only 4 months a year, when you pull in $5500/week for that time, how terrible can a 401K/match plan be (especially when refs don’t want to affect their more-lucrative, full-time jobs)

There are a few things that bother me about all of this. 1st – I am not sure how it got to be open season on these guys. Sure they stink, but they didn’t ask for it. Its a job. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE is taking shots at these guys. The announcer act like it is the 1st time any of this had happened. The 2nd thing is I compare this to sausage being made. How many Media, Fans and the whole group has criticized the refs in the past. Oh they need to be full time. Need to be younger but how do you think you are going to get a bunch of old guys getting 6 figures for a weekend job to go full time. It will never happen. My last point is the players and the coaches. Are you telling me that the only thing that is stopping the league from turning into Brawl Ball is experienced Refs. I see players pushing players on every play now. The players and the coaches have to take some responsibility for making this thing bad too. Tell you what Pete Carrol and McCarthy were great last night. They werent’t flipping out every time something did go their way. Half the coaches in the league now act like the dogs been shot on every call. Everyone needs to suck it up!

They will have 28 penalties their next game, it’s a mathmatical certainty.

Week 1: 10 = +10
Week 2: 18 = +8
Week 3: 24 = +6

Week 4: 28 = +4

Maybe that means the lockout will be over in week 6 or 7…

Replacement refs do not hurt the NFL product, they hurt the fan’s enjoyment of the NFL product.

Everyone selling football to you makes just as much money with these refs as they did with other refs.

No football fan is going to stop watching next Sunday, so the NFLRA has zero leverage, and the league is more than content to weather the screams and irate sentiments of fans, all the while hauling in bank at the same obscene rate they have for years.

Whoever is official #26, that’s the one who needs to be “releived” of his duties. He was responsible for that terrible pass interference call on first and 35, and it wasn’t surprising he raised his arms for TD at end of game. This guy is in way over his head. Comical to watch last night and the ending didn’t shock me one bit. NFL should be ashamed

Last night debacle effected only 2 teams (1 bad, 1 good) and *maybe* repeat *maybe* effected a handful of others.

The important numbers in this discussion are:

1, 1, 30, and 0.

1 team is happy.
1 team is torqued.
30 teams don’t really care that much.
0 dollars have been lost.

The apportioned cost of settling this issue with the NFL’s real officials works out to a whopping $100,000 per team per year. $100K. That’s it.

The NFL has more money than the Sahara has sand. Pay up and stop making yourselves (that means all you owners) look like Mr. Scrooge.

Keep us posted on who they have next week. Whatever game they’re at, I hope the home ground greets them with a defeaning chorus of boos.

I’m also tired of people saying “Don’t blame the replacements! They didn’t ask for this!”

Uhm, what? Did the NFL hold a gun to their heads and force them to take the job? These clowns knew full well they weren’t qualified for this gig, and they took it anyway. They deserve everything they get.
