The Steeler D has been giving up leads and not getting off the field on third downs for the past couple of seasons.

Harrison made a great play, he's paid to make great plays. Troy is paid to make great plays as well. What's your point? The fact that great players make great plays doesn't change the fact that overall the D is getting older, and slipping, and LeBeau's schemes have been exposed. The fact that they FINALLY moved Farrior out has helped, but it's not enough, it's time to retool.

What kind of second-half leads have the Steelers' defense been giving up? Twenty-point leads? Fourteen-point leads? Ten-point-point leads? Three-point leads? One-point leads?
You Roethlisberger Apologists are hilarious.
Your decision to dodge my question about Harrison's greatest defensive play in Super Bowl history speaks volumes.
Your silence is golden.

The D has been giving up leads in the second half on a regular basis. Sunday was a prime example of it, but by no means the only one.

I agree with you about Polamalu's importance. In fact I find it pretty troublesome that we are so reliant on him. He's a great player, no question. But how much longer does he have? With his playing style, not so long.

My point is that Lebeau can't coach forever and Troy can't play forever. It is time to begin to explore life without them. No one lasts forever in this game, player or coach.

rafterman:
Are you actually saying that Harrison's pick-six in Super Bowl 43 was insignificant?
Harrison's dazzling pick-six, by the way, was set up by a Roethlisberger interception that had placed the Cardinals' high-powered offense at point-blank range near the end of the first half.
LeBeau's under-appreciated defense, like it had done so often throughout the 2008 season, turned the game and allowed Roethlisberger's only TD pass in two Super Bowl wins to be, you know, relevant...
As for last week's game in Oakland: Troy Polamalu didn't play. The Steelers' record without Polamalu is 13-10.

steelersownyou:
You're really stuck on those Super Bowls, aren't you?
-- Super Bowl 40: Your beloved Ben had the lowest passer rating in Super Bowl history. The TEAM bailed him out with a 21-10 win.
-- Super Bowl 43: Your beloved Ben struggled for 57 minutes against the absolute worst defensive team in Super Bowl history. He produced 13 points before he put together a touchdown drive against a PREVENT defense. That TD drive was made relevant by James Harrison's spectacular 100-yard interception return for a TD, which is regarded as the greatest defensive play in Super Bowl history.
Let's review: Two Super Bowl wins, one TD pass, zero Super Bowl MVP awards.
Do you want me to even mention Super Bowl 45? Of course you do. A pick six (7) in a six-point loss.

rafterman:
You are absolutely right about the defense. The Steelers are losing games because Dick LeBeau's defense is no longer capable of carring the team.
Guilty as charged...
By the way: The Ravens' defense is ranked 27th. The Steelers' defense is ranked 18th. The Ravens are 2-1. The Steelers are 1-2.
Football's a funny game.

stoogy is EXACTLY right. Ben could have led this team to 3-0 but he failed. I thought Ben was a "winner" and stats didn't matter because he would always find a way to get it done. Elite QB's don't need a top 10 defense to win games. Flacco's still winning games with a subpar defense. To those who are so proud of Bens 8 TD passes, do you know who else has 8? Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Steelersownyou:
You do realize, don't you, that the Steelers won a lot of games prior to 2004? Are you that new to the Steelers' crowded bandwagon that you can't recall the team winning with Bubby Brister, Neil O'Donnell. Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox?
And please don't talk about Super Bowls. Roethlisberger hasn't played well in any of three in which he's played.
Right now, Roethlisberger is having the kind of season expected from a 100-million-dollar quarterback: 8 TD passes, 1 interception and over 900 yards passing through three games. That's all terrific!!
But please don't pretend that's he's played this well throughout his career. He hasn't.
The Steelers haven't been ``the Browns'' since the 1960s. I'm pretty sure we'll all survive without Ben Roethlisberger and his massive ego.

After 8 seasons and 112 career starts, Roethlisberger appears to be finally having a breakout season.
About time!!!
Still, three games do not make a season, especially since those three games have been against some pretty bad teams...
To be honest, I'll be so glad when the ``Big Ben Era'' is finally over ... so the Steelers can get back to being a TEAM...
When will it ever end!?

While I agree in general the offense has been more prolific, I completely disagree with how Haley has been handling things. A decent ground game is CRUCIAL to success in the NFL, and although yes the offense scored 31 points on Sunday, the ability to run down the clock by handing the ball off would have secured the victory late in the game. Instead, for 3 straight weeks Haley has insisted on this ridiculous 'running back by committee' setup where he rotates any one of FIVE different backs onto the field. This never, ever works anywhere, and the running numbers for all 3 weeks show it. Time to get off the fence, pick a PRIMARY back to get 80% of the carries, and let it ride. Spreading the runs out so that each back only gets maybe 4 or 5 touches per game ensures that none of them will ever have any success.

Todd Haley has a history of not playing well with others. This is at least his 4th team where this has been an issue. Haley and TO with the Cowboys, Haley and Boldin in AZ, Haley and Dwayne Bowe in KC, Haley and Roethlisberger in PGH, who did I miss? Then there's a list of public disputes Haley has had with other coaches, too.

Judging by the offensive production on the field, if there is a "rift" it needs to continue. It's well documented that Haley is not easy to get along with, so what. It just makes it easier to cut him loose when he stops producing. But so far I think the Offense is doing pretty damn good.

Really strange final line to this story. Clearly, the passing game has been a strength. Roethlisberger leads the league in passing TDs, is fourth in passing yards, second in passer rating, and has thrown one interception in 120 attempts.

Haley and Roethlisberger are producing. The defense has been the problem.
