Steelers safety Ryan Mundy is paying for the vicious hit he laid on Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on Sunday.
Mundy has been fined $21,000 for the hit, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
The collision between the crown of Mundy’s helmet and Heyward-Bey’s chin was violent, and it left Heyward-Bey motionless on the ground for several minutes. He eventually moved his arm to wave to the fans as he was stretchered off the field, the first sign that he would be OK.
Heyward-Bey ultimately spent one night in the hospital with a concussion and a neck strain.
In a week when the NFL suspended another player, Denver’s Joe Mays, for a helmet-to-helmet hit, Mundy is lucky that a $21,000 fine is all he got.
