In what universe does having loads of high draft picks make a team automatic contenders? It gaurantees nothing but a minimum of half a decade of cap hell, since they had to start a rebuild before the rookie scale went into effect. They inherited a team with literally ONE great player – Calvin. They’ve gone from worst team in history to double-digit wins and playoffs by the 3rd season.
That said, there are certain deficiencies in how they are running things recently. It is definitely time for them to abandon the dogged adherence to BPA draft philosophy. It worked well when there was NO talent here. Now that there are acute needs at specific positions, they need to fill them with low-risk prospects, not with late round projects.

1. The secondary was not addressed in the offseason at all in free agency or the draft….waiting til the 3rd round to address it is a joke..Safety was a huge issue the 2nd half of last season and that was not addressed either.

2. Scott Linehan’s play calling is atrocious. The Why would you try to run against the niners…that was dumb,,,,as for the game against the titans..the 1st half play calls were horrible,,,and the 4th and 1 in OT,i don’t care whos fault it is,,,run the ball with Leshoure or pass it,,,you don’t QB sneak behind raiola ( see raiola vs grady jackson getting stuffed on 3 straight qb sneaks,,,raiola super soft )

3. The Lions defensive line is overrated, especially overpaid cliff avril, and KVB ( hes way past his prime )….No way should Avril be back in 2012

4. The O line is soft,Raiola and Peterman need to go , and backus will not be back, and Cherlius may not be back either….

5. Special teams besides team mvp jason hanson is atrocious.

How can you come up close to putting Shwartz in the hotseat? He is the coach who brought this team to playoff since whenever the last time they had been to (Truman’s administration or whatever the case maybe). This team is couple years before the superbowl appearance. Thanks to the early draft pick they have accumulated in the years past.
