shlort:

"The replay official cannot rule on possession of the football under any circumstances. "

Not true - thought you'd want to know.

From an NFL statement about the play:

"Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone."

As I said in an earlier post - I have no problem with the ref's call at full speed - that's how it looked to him, and he called it as he saw it. But on replay - it could have been - and probably SHOULD have been - clearly stated to the ref that simultaneous possession had not occurred and the call therefore overturned.

Anyway - you're right - time to move on.

I was at this game. That last Seahawk drive looked as fixed as one could be. The bogus Roughing call againest the Packers, followed by the bogus PI call, sandwiched in between were two more flags, and then after the PI another flag before the Hail Mary. I really think this ref took some dough for the outcome of the game. Wouldn't these replacements be the perfect target for the gamblers to score big? No spread had the Hawks winning by 1 point. Easley took some money I say. There had to be twenty flags thrown, probably more. It seemed every other play a flag was laying on the ground. National TV, refs who were never on the tube, I'm sorry this whole game has stink all over it. It would not be so hard to slide a replacement a little cash, they were screwing up so bad, they figured no one would notice, and no one did.

the tate TD call wasn’t incorrect. if you think it was than u almost think the miles austin catch against the jets last year was. since both regular refs on that play – and the replay ref – agreed that was a TD, the replay ref on the tate TD (who as also a regular) agreed it was a TD, and the NFL explained why it was the correct call, u can safely put to rest this argument. You can also stop with the “everybody but Seattle Seahawks fans” thought it was an interception. There have been a lot of people – on this blog and elsewhere – who have been able to look at this without the bias that you do.

I see a lot of comments about the replay booth on this issue. This is how I understand replay in this instance.

The replay official cannot rule on possession of the football under any circumstances. The replay official had no grounds to determine possession of the football, nor could he say GB had the ball and Seattle did not. It is not within his authority to make a call on possession.

So, quit saying "the replay official said it was good". Truth is, the replay official told the Referee that he could not make a judgement on posession because the rules state he cannot. The play stood as called because the call was made as a touchdown on the field and couldnt be reviewed. No review, no reversal. The call on the field was wrong and that is that. The replay official only looked at whether or not the pass was incomplete. It never touched the ground so the play stood as called on the field.

Furthermore, the back judge and side judge didnt discuss the play as they had seen it prior to making the call. It appears to me that the side judge threw up his arms because he thought the back judge was signalling touchdown. It is obvious that the back judge was signalling for the play to end on a clock stoppage with a change of possession as a touchback.

Anyway, it is what it is. Week 3 is over and week 4 is underway.

The rule clearly states whoever has possession "in the air first". If you think Tate had possession in mid air first, you are obviously a seahawk fan. At one point during the game, the production team put up a magnified bubble around Tate's right arm which clearly showed he had yet to put that hand to the ball while M.D. Jenning had both hands on the ball. Nothing else matters! Jennings doesn't have to land with the ball in his hands to show possession. That was already shown! Thems the rules boys and girls from Seattle.

For those that feel this is the worst call they have ever seen, welcome to NFL football. It is a frustrating journey. Anyone who has watched the game for 30 years or so can easily come up with calls that trump that one. For me the worst is the time the Redskins halfback ran 75 yards up the sideline for the winning touchdown, only to be called out of bounds by a ref on the other side of the field. They didnt make the playoffs because of the loss. NFL films the following week showed he was never clser than one yard from the sideline. Oh well. Keep watching. Even now with replay they come up with bad calls.

Hey KattyKathy,

The NFL rules governing simultaneous possession are very precise & carved in stone. Neither you or side judge Lance Easley can alter them to suit your wishes. He erred in his call(s), (don't forget about the missed offensive pass interference, also). This is the 2nd forum on which I have witnessed your posts and all I can say is you & Mr Easley are either ignorant, delusional or in denial of the rules.

No one can say the regular refs haven't made mistakes, just as the players on the field have made mistakes. But what makes a professional? You make a minimum of mistakes.

I have the NFL package and have watched many games. The level of competence by the replacements was atrocious. The game was too fast and too big for them. Every game I watched had horrible calls, phantom calls, etc. The game I watched on Monday night was the worst officiated game I have ever seen. The calls were bad for both sides. As a Packer fan, I was actually mortified at some of the calls that went against Seattle. The players on each team looked confused, like they didn't know what was going to happen next. The last play was one of the worst calls in NFL history.

But I don't blame the replacement refs. I blame Goodell and the owners for penny pinching with the lowest paid people on the playing field and thinking that rank amateurs could officiate in a billion dollar business. No matter what happens with the Packers the rest of the year, this season has been tainted for me.

You have to not only have the ball but have either two feet or a body part on the ground, and that never happened,” Easley said.

But that’s not what the rules of the NFL say. The rules say, “It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control.” So Jennings didn’t need to have possession with either two feet or a body part on the ground. He just needed to have control of the ball first and then possession.

I find it funny that some people are still making the comment that Tate "also had control of the ball." Video and still photos clearly show his right forearm was on top of the ball during the initial catch. He did not have his left hand/arm anywhere near the ball. Now, if you can take a football, hold it away from your body and place it under your forearm and hold onto it, I will absolutely buy your argument that Tate had control of the ball.
What? The ball fell to the floor? My point exactly.

As far as I concerned on that play Easley made the right call...it's not a completed catch till the player has complete control of the ball and 2 feet or a foot and knee on the ground. Jennings only had one foot down with another players hands on the ball. It was a tie....goes to the passing team..get over it.

@elvoid,
I have been saying the same thing since Monday night and I agree with you 1oo% up until where you say the call was blown. The review process requires that there be clear and indisputable evidence (or similar wording) that shows the call was wrong. I don't think that play could have been reversed regardless of which way the original real-time call went. I think it can be said that Jennings had more control than Tate (2 hands vs 1) but it cannot be said that Tate had no control at all--and the rules do not specify anything having complete control vs shared control of the ball with another player--until you get into "simultaneous possession"
