San Diego's 13th hour attempt to keep the Chargers will fail, why? Fire Norv Turner and AJ Smith, hire Jon Gruden who is a victory-engineer; move to a metropolitan area with 5x as many people and a new, state-of-the-art stadium downtown next to one of the nation's most prominent sports franchises (the Lakers); and the economics just don't add up to stay in San Diego, even if you get a new stadium.

Even lackluster loyalty in LA that compares to the current situation in SD still provides the franchise a better opportunity to sellout given sheer market size alone. LA is larger and hungry for a team.

Whoever thinks that the Raiders will move back to Los Angeles is sorely mistaken.
Since when did Monday Night Football become worthy of a special site?
The whole idea of MNF back in the day was to televise primetime football games to showcase entire cities in all their nightly, well-lite splendor.
MNF was a chance for each home team to unleash its rabid fanbase with the entire nation watching.
A Steelers-Ravens clash in front of a neutral crowd 3,000 miles away simply wouldn't have the same impact that such a game now has in either snowy Baltimore or icy Pittsburgh...
Holding MNF games in LA is such a dumb idea, Roger Goodell is probably in favor of doing just that...

Will somebody please tell the SD Union Tribune's Nick Canepa about this? :)

Many Charger fans - including this former season ticket holder - are tired of the false promises/hype year after year - with a supposedly underperforming team - and can't stand the current GM - AJ Smith - or the very bland un-inspiring coach - Norv -Turner.

They are gone to LA and Spanos the Younger can rake in much more moolah.

jrod2173,

Sorry, why owners uproot their franchises from one city for the next.

You just have to look at the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, LA Rams, Houston Oilers, St.Louis Cardinals...its like Steve Ross is following the exact blueprint. He says he is doing everything he can to keep the team in South Florida, Miami Gardens, but at some point he will say enough is enough, and winning won't keep the team in Miami Gardens. The history might stay ,but Ross will take the money and head west to LA .Unless the state gets more lube, but they have two NFL teams and Dade county can't take another painful penetration.

Yes, the Vikings are still considered for L.A.

That's why they announced their architect today to build the new stadium next to the metrodome after the bill was finally passed this last legislative session.

They are correct though, L.A. Vikings did have a nice ring to it. As would Sacramento Vikings, Duluth Vikings, Arden Hills Vikings, Las Vegas Vikings, San Antonio Vikings, New Mexico Vikings, London Vikings, Amsterdamn Vikings, Ireland Vikings, New Hampshire Vikings.... New Hampshire..?!

Any home team with the name Vikings has a good ring to it. As long as the Minnesota Vikings are still in existence, in Minnesota.

@ ALL charger fans- the desperation in your posts is palpable.
The chargers had almost 10k unsold tickets to a game featuring two undefeated teams, just last week (bolts got exposed and rolled up vs the falcons).

The spanos clan is as cheap as they come, don't count on them doing anything with the "charger fans" in mind- they will hang you out to dry and all you'll have left is the lowly padres, sea world and lego land.

tomtravis76 says: Sep 28, 2012 6:27 PM

It looks like more of an expansion of the league to 34 franchises.

But if you look at what is going on with Miami and the history behind why owners leave, he is walking that path.
----------------------------------------------------
I dont care whether they move or not to be honest. But just to clarify, I hope you are talking about Miami as a city and not the Dolphins when saying "the history behind why owners leave". Because Ross is only the 3rd owner of the team EVER. The Robbie family had it since inception and Huizenga became part owner in 1990 after Joe died, and full owner in 1993. He was in control until he sold it to Ross in 2008. So in actuality, there has been very little turnover in the owner department.

The problem isnt Miami, its losing, plain and simple. Winning changes everything.

I really like the Monday Night Football idea, except I would say it's a stop-gap until they lure a team or two. In the meantime, give L.A a game every Monday of the NFL season to bring in revenue to make the stadium worth being built prior to landing a team.

15 games per season isn't far-fetched, considering they should have two teams, each having 8 games at home, with one annually being their VS game.

The only question would be as with London, which team gets a "home" game taken away from them?

Why not make an exception and have both teams playing an away game, including both wearing their road/alternate jerseys?

Can’t wait to see what Ed Roski’s plan B is for his “shovel ready” project in COI?

Outlet Mall? Indian Casino? Trailer Park?

Inquiring minds want to know.

================================

Roski's got nothing to worry about. The NFL wants two teams there, and Roski will get one of them.

As a Raiders fan, I'd almost prefer his stadium. Everything I've read says the proposed Farmer's Field location (next to the Staples Center) is uber-ghetto once you get a couple blocks outside the complex. Industry might be the better location.

It looks like more of an expansion of the league to 34 franchises.

But if you look at what is going on with Miami and the history behind why owners leave, he is walking that path. He can't sell tickets(and week in and week out he is buying the tickets up), he is having issues with corporate sponsorships, they are going to be looking for another stadium rights naming deal, they are losing revenue to other south florida stadium/arenas, he has been trying every backroom trick to steal money from the state to get stadium upgrades-and he is crying to everyone that without public funds Miami will never get another Super Bowl.

Yes, Ross owns the stadium and land, he could move the franchise to LA and be a legend in LA with the celebrities who he wants to be liked by. He has UM in a long lease, he has the Orange Bowl and he could also lease out the stadium for more soccer events. But what could be done in one swoop would be to sell the land to Calder who are trying to expand with a hotel/resort like Hard Rock area basically adjacent to the casino and horse track for year round destination use.

If the Dolphins left , sure it would suck for so many fans, but they have three major college programs that the state is fanatical about and the pro game would just become a memory from the 70's and 80's much like the Cocaine Cowboys and Miami Vice.

So I will ask you again Florio. Please tell my why you tagged or even mentioned the Jaguars in the article. Get off the standard line of the Jags are a candidate just because the majority of the media wants them to be a candidate. Khan has stated repeatedly he is committed to Jacksonville. Just once, once, I would love for any member of the media to actually back up their claim with actual evidence. It can't be done but doesn't stop you from reporting it.

It's going to be San Diego. Most painless transition since there wouldn't need to be any realignment.

Isn't it telling that of all the franchises mentioned, the Chargers are the only one that don't get a single fan on here coming to their defense.
