Winslow wanted more playing time

Bill Belichick AP

So why did tight end Kellen Winslow want out of New England?  Per a league source, Winslow wanted more playing time.

If that’s the case, he could have gotten more playing time this weekend, given that receiver Julian Edelman (hand) is out, and tight end Rob Gronkowski is surprisingly listed as questionable with a hip injury.

On Friday, coach Bill Belichick told the media during a press conference that Winslow was cut for “personal reasons.”

“Yesterday I had a discussion with Kellen and at the end of that discussion, we talked about several different things, at the end of that discussion, I felt that it was best that we release Kellen for personal reasons so that’s what we did,” Belichick said in comments distributed by the team.

So the “personal reasons” apparently were that Winslow is personally looking for more playing time. It’ll be interesting to see whether he gets that opportunity elsewhere.

In New England, you get playing time the old fashioned way….. You EARN it.

So when Pete Carroll cuts him the PFT writers hint that he’s a fool but when Belichick cuts him no such slanted article. Maybe Carroll had just as much reason.

winslow is stupid if he thought he was getting a ton of playing time when signing with new england in the first place with the TEs they already had.

But, but, but the Patriot Way is the cure all for everything! Pats won’t make the playoffs.

Looks like I was right with my speculation on the reason in the original post. The Lions have Tony Scheffler banged up and Will Heller dropped a pass recently. He should have some time to play with the Lions and let him take the hits to help us attack the middle of the field like we need to do.

  8. robert831 says: Sep 28, 2012 6:23 PM

This guy is an idiot. He is on the team for 1 game and is complaining about playing time. He would have had a big role this week if he could keep his mouth shut. On that note if he could shut his mouth he would be starting for the Bucs…

Hey soldier, heres a new amount of playing time!! ZERO

    Good riddance.

Yes because everyone is against the Seahawks. The league office, the refs in the Steelers Super Bowl, the refs in that Jets game, the media. Everyone is against Seattle.

Didn’t the Seattle is a victim card die on Monday night?a

Does Seattle schools not teach reading comprehension?

This line clearly says he is a fool.

I bet Cleveland wanted him to stop with the Cirque de Soleil motorcycle tricks too.

What is it like to want soldier?

  14. hawkforlife says: Sep 28, 2012 6:51 PM

I get that. It wasn’t hard. Maybe wolfmanpatriot needs to understand that my comment wasn’t a slam against Belichick, my favorite coach by the way. And where does Seattle victim come into this conversation at all. Thin skins folks.

  15. patsfiend says: Sep 28, 2012 7:10 PM

Patriots Way or the Highway, bud. Gotta love Billy B. I would love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation. You know Winslow said something idiotic and Belichick probably just told him to pack his bags.

  16. bolts0621 says: Sep 28, 2012 7:12 PM

Winslow is an idiot – nothing like over-playign your hand. Carroll was right to cut him – who needs a prima donna Tight End who practices one day a week and makes demands.

    He is no Kellen Winslow.

  17. davidcl77 says: Sep 28, 2012 7:13 PM

“The soldier” is finished. He was ignorant enough to say he was going to be better than his dad. How did that work out? Laughable. What a punk.

  18. mymanmccoy says: Sep 28, 2012 7:16 PM

Once again proving the depth of his denial. You suck kellen, you’re not your dad and never will be. Nobody “owes” you playing time. Good luck in donesville Mr. Mayor!

  19. jayquintana says: Sep 28, 2012 7:18 PM

The only place I see him getting a lot of playing time is the UFL.

Yeah sure they won’t. Just a dumb comment to make. He is an a hole…he gets signed on Tuesday and wants more playing time a week later. Give me a break

  21. ReinaLee says: Sep 28, 2012 7:19 PM

As a fan of Bill Belichick, I always laugh when people have such negative things to say about him. Sure he seems grumpy with the media, and he never says anything worth writing in an article, and he goes overboard in praising his next opponent, but look at it this way, he has never bad mouthed anyone. Say what you want about him, but when ever a player, or coach leaves NE, he takes the high road every time. I know some of you are getting antsy to type about how dumb I am because of the whole Mangini thing, but think about it, has he ever said anything bad about Mangini? He has chosen to never say anything good, but never anything bad. I suppose “hoodie” isnt quite the “classless jerk” that some people paint him to be, but those people wouldnt change their mind no matter what. He could donate his entire salary this year to needy children and it wouldnt change the opinion of those that dislike him

  22. coseybedaman says: Sep 28, 2012 7:21 PM

I personally dont see what the big deal is here. He is a veteran who has put 9 starting seasons in the NFL at tight end. If the guy feels as though he can start somewhere who are we to tell him he cant? He certainly is not going to be bagging groceries as some illuded to. Kellen Winslow will be starting in the NFL this year somewhere. I dont say this because I love the guy. I say this because he is talented, and guys with much less talent start at tight end in this league.

  23. coseybedaman says: Sep 28, 2012 7:23 PM

Its also pretty clear that he ASKED FOR HIS OWN RELEASE. Not sure why all of the homer Patriot fans on the board are acting like Belichick gave the guy his walking papers. Obviously Belichick wanted the guy on the roster 2 weeks ago.

  24. tbd3 says: Sep 28, 2012 7:27 PM

What? Talk about being impatient. Winslow was in New England for less than a week!

  25. dlmcc1010 says: Sep 28, 2012 7:27 PM

Ridiculous. At this point in his career he should be happy he had a job with a winning organization. Why sign with them then if youre going to complain about playing time? They have the deepest TE pool in the NFL. What did he think was going to happen there. Even if he did get alot of time, he was only going right back to the bench when Hernandez came back. Delusional to say the least and thats been the story of his life

  26. EJ says: Sep 28, 2012 7:43 PM

If it wasn’t for his father paving his way to the NFL, this kid would have been done after college. That is not what happened though, Kellen was in right off the bat because of what his father did while he was in the league. Everyone expected like father, like son, but what they got was a kid who didn’t have half of his fathers work ethic, and expected respect without earning it. If he gets another chance, It will be because of something related to his old man.

  27. phillypatsfan says: Sep 28, 2012 8:16 PM

C’mon Florio you’re better than that. No need to insinuate that Winslow was complaining about playing time. Today on Boston sports radio, Mike Lombardi (knows Belichick and how he ticks pretty well) said that Winslow asked to be released because his knee would limit him in practice and Winslow knew that if he couldn’t practice he wouldn’t play. Guy just wanted to get healthy before giving it one more shot at playing next year when his knee heals up.

  28. vineee1 says: Sep 28, 2012 8:21 PM

i guess u could say Kellns Wins(have been)Low!! see ya!!!

  29. librarianfootballfan says: Sep 28, 2012 9:49 PM

Just speculation…….I’m wondering what he was like in the locker room and if that had any influence on this departure —- star mentalities aren’t tolerated, and there may have been a request for change in attitude followed by a request for release.

  30. geefan1 says: Sep 28, 2012 9:56 PM

I’m guessing the personal reason was the once Bill talked with him do 15 minutes he realized that personally, KII is a knucklehead.

  31. patriotenvy says: Sep 28, 2012 10:22 PM

So he thought he was going to get more playing time when he signed and then realized after one game it wasn’t what he thought? still strange.

  32. tscar22 says: Sep 28, 2012 10:23 PM

dolphins should sign him.. naa that have too much talent already at TE idiots !!!!!

  33. cpo187 says: Sep 28, 2012 11:33 PM

The Pats practice field WAS more playing time for Winslow.

  34. promickey says: Sep 28, 2012 11:53 PM

The Dolphins need a playmaking tight end but Winslow may have to wait until GM Jeff Ireland gets fired. Jeff only goes after perfect citizens that can’t play.

  35. jeffesky says: Sep 28, 2012 11:56 PM

It seems the nfl has changed aot in the last for the vets like winow. Players just of the ncaa are more prepaired than ever to start even in the late rounds and undrafted guys. So i think there are many good points made here and as a hawks fan i did like kellen but the staff had some doubts and in the end got younger, healthier and cheaper with more long term potential in even moore.

  36. riverhorsey says: Sep 29, 2012 12:37 AM

Winslow thought he was HOF….he’s not

  37. randomcommenter says: Sep 29, 2012 12:47 AM

So, in Winslow’s mind he was going to sign late in NE and beat out Gronk for the starting spot?

Maybe he can sign with New Orleans next week and try to beat out Jimmy Graham.

I don’t wish injury on anybody, but i sure do hope to someday read about Winslow going bankrupt in some sort of ponzi scheme.

  38. magicbucs says: Sep 29, 2012 1:19 AM

There’s a reason the bucs traded him for a 7th round pick. They were lucky to even get that for him.

He has the talent but too big of an ego, not a team guy and a bad influence on younger players. I’m sure daddy’s pissed he gave him his name.

  39. whiteshoesjohnson says: Sep 29, 2012 1:19 AM

    Another compelling, candid Belichick comment

  40. chooko says: Sep 29, 2012 1:22 AM

  41. wolfmanpatriot says: Sep 29, 2012 2:08 AM

Hawk. I didn’t say or imply you said anything about BB.

The last line is from the writer, not a quote. When he says “it will be interesting to see if he gets that opportunity elsewhere”, he is basically saying Winslow is a fool and will not get much playing time elsewhere.

Apparently 50 others donts reads two goods, either. So, whadda I know, right!?!

I’ve had enough of the Patriots trying to rejuvenate malcontents. Not enough return on the investment in recent years.
