Victor Cruz to Roddy White: I have a ring, I don’t care what you say

Victor Cruz AP

There’s a war of words brewing between two of the NFL’s best wide receivers.

Atlanta’s Roddy White was asked in an NFL Network interview whether he and Julio Jones are a better duo than Giants receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and in answering the question White took a little bit of a shot at Cruz.

“Victor Cruz is a lot more of a slot receiver; the big boys play on the outside,” White said.

That’s far from the worst trash talk we’ve ever heard, but when Cruz was told about it he didn’t take kindly to it.

“I couldn’t care less about what anybody else has to say,” Cruz told the Star-Ledger. “I got a ring back at home. I don’t care about what Roddy White has to say.”

White believes the Falcons have the best pair of receivers in the league.

“The thing that me and [Julio Jones] bring to the game, we’re probably the best duo in the league right now,” White said.

Cruz sounds satisfied enough about having a ring that he’s willing to let White go ahead and keep thinking that.

It’s something to fall back on when you have nothing else to say.

  2. bluereign says: Sep 29, 2012 11:01 AM

Put up or shut up Roddy. Win some meaningful games then speak.

  3. sportswannabe says: Sep 29, 2012 11:02 AM

Right response from Cruz. I appreciate Roddy thinking he and Julio are the best, he should have that confidence. But taking a shot at Cruz as a slot guy when he has had success outside as well is just silly. I know, he was on my fantasy team last year, so I watched him a ton.

NFL trash talk 101. When all else fails… bring up Superbowl wins.

  6. pksoze says: Sep 29, 2012 11:07 AM

Where were these big boys when Atlanta scored two points on a safety in the playoffs last year.

  7. inthearex says: Sep 29, 2012 11:08 AM

Two things… First, I thought the tough guys are the one who operate in the middle of the field. Secondly, Lets go back to last years wild card playoff game when those Falcons took on the Giants. I think that game alone should put this argument to bed.

  8. kordogg says: Sep 29, 2012 11:08 AM

ohhh that burns. Roddy White can be insufferably arrogant for being on a team that has not won a playoff game in his whole tenure in Atlanta. Victor plays just as if not better than Roddy. Lets compare the stats of both this season so far and at the end. Julio Jones has been way more productive thus far for Atlanta. That can change as the season goes on, but for him to mock Victor as of right now for lack of talent is insulting and ignorant. Get a clue and a touchdown while you’re at it mr. White

  9. djmcba says: Sep 29, 2012 11:09 AM

Roddy is correct, not because of Cruz, but because of the oft injured Nicks. The Falcons have the better wideout duo, the Giants have the ring and are more than happy to hang their hat on that- which they damn well should.

  10. raiderrob21 says: Sep 29, 2012 11:09 AM

I know all recievers drop the ball, but Roddy drops it a little more than others. Also Atlanta & Giants played last year, the Giants recievers showed up in that game. The whole Atlanta team was missing. Cruz and Nicks all day in my book..

  15. packafan4life says: Sep 29, 2012 11:17 AM

Cruz has more receptions on TV commercials than on the field this year.

  16. streeterdee says: Sep 29, 2012 11:20 AM

Nicks & Cruz is what it is.. White is a good WR but Jones is not fully developed!!! NYG dusted them off last year in the post….where were they, the so called best tandem White & Jones???? Maybe they will get revenge this year but they are not the best, one of the best, but not the best… Roddy shut your mouth and play ball cause ATL seems to go MIA in the post they are a mirage team…

    NYG “Build The Bridge”

  17. keepingitrealdumb says: Sep 29, 2012 11:21 AM

its not like cruz was the 4th WR sitting on the bench when he got that ring .. he was a major contributor to them getting the ring .. so it is not a ‘nothing better to say just fall back on the ring’.

and white is clearly wrong .. ‘the outside is where the big boys play’ is laughable .. look at cruz’s stats .. look at the number of 100+ yard games .. cruz is most definitely one of the ‘big boys’.

  18. pixelito says: Sep 29, 2012 11:24 AM

    Short memory, this White.

  19. alev523 says: Sep 29, 2012 11:25 AM

Victor Cruz takes the slot and goes over the middle, I remember when Roddy white did that earlier in his career he was afraid of getting hit and usually dropped the ball. Also who had 1500 in his first season starting o that would be cruuuuuuuuz

  20. bluefan204 says: Sep 29, 2012 11:26 AM

“The thing that me and [Julio Jones] bring to the game, we’re probably the best duo in the league right now,” White said.

Should have brought whatever that “thing” is to the 24-2 slapdown your team had to swallow. These Falclown players are just like the Eagles. All talk, all hype, and nothing to show for any of it but stats. Must be a bird thing…

Fact: The Giants and Cruz have won a Super Bowl. Fact: Roddy did not claim to have a ring. He said right now they are the best duo. he can think what he wants…true or not; so lets not get all whiny because a receiver on a 3-0 team feels good about his place and answers a question. With all respect to the Giants…and they deserve it, those 2 points were last year. All the Falcon haters…enjoy that playoff game last year. It’s all you have. khmer379 – Keep dreaming.

  29. lolo376 says: Sep 29, 2012 11:42 AM

Not a fan of either team, and it’s true that the worst player on a Super Bowl team can say he has a ring. But don’t talk trash when ” the best duo” can’t even get your team close enough to get a field goal!

  30. bigbluebruiser says: Sep 29, 2012 11:43 AM

Last I checked, Cruz is about as big as you Roddy.

  31. beckzhere says: Sep 29, 2012 11:43 AM

Roddy and Julio are the best WR duo in the league. That has nothing to do with Rings, defense, coaching, etc. The point being made is right now they are the best WR duo…and they are.

  32. packerfan36 says: Sep 29, 2012 11:48 AM

Roddy White….The Most Overhyped WR in the NFL that talks more than produces in big games.

  33. thrstr says: Sep 29, 2012 11:54 AM

    NEXT!

  34. coseybedaman says: Sep 29, 2012 11:56 AM

Roddy White has been a top 5 or 6 wideout in the game for about 7 seasons now. He never said the Falcons are a better team, or the Giants defense was terrible. He simply compared WR duo’s. I think he has a valid argument when speaking SOLELY on wide receiving tandems. Roddy has been elite for nearly a decade while Cruz has had one good season. I’ll say it was a great season, but Roddy has earned the right to speak his mind.

  35. bluewinger says: Sep 29, 2012 11:56 AM

That a boy Victor, that should shut roddy up!

  36. EJ says: Sep 29, 2012 11:57 AM

Personally, I think the slot receiver position takes bigger bullets to play than an outside receiver. The slot does a bunch more going across the middle of the field, which is way more dangerous. So for White to say that Cruz is more of a slot receiver is a compliment if you ask me. The outside receiver rarely gets roughed up after 5 yards, the slot gets hammered all the time. Do I think Cruz is a better receiver than White… No, absolutely not. Victor Cruz only stands out because of his Quarterbacks play. If Cruz had Mark Sanchez or Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing to him, he wouldn’t be as well known as he is now. Roddy White would excel regardless who is throwing him the ball.

  37. dogluverssuck says: Sep 29, 2012 11:59 AM

Roddy should be directing his negative energy towards his 72 million dollar hyped qb.

He should be asking him why they have been out scored 72 – 23 in their last 2 playoff games.

  38. pmars64 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:01 PM

I never understand why some guys who have never accomplished anything meaningful like post-season success decide to open their mouths. White and the Falcons have done nothing but choke and do it in spectacular fashion. Wasn’t Atlanta’s 1st round destruction by Green Bay the worst #1 seed playoff loss in NFL history? Matty Ice will melt once more come January. Everyone knows that he can be fooled. Book it.

  39. dogluverssuck says: Sep 29, 2012 12:04 PM

If you have a Dink & Dunk qb like Ryan you may get more receptions, but you won’t be able to go deep.

It doesn’t matter how good Roddy and Julio may be, if their qb has a noodle for an arm, they will eventually get killed by a lurking linebacker over the middle of the field.

Ryan is just an over paid Joey Harrington.

  40. pack15forever says: Sep 29, 2012 12:05 PM

Roddy White is all talk. This clown loves to tell the world how great he is and then disappears in the playoffs. What happened when you played the Giants in the playoffs last season? Did you even suit up?

  41. bmorefalcon says: Sep 29, 2012 12:06 PM

I think that the Giants and their fans should be more concerned with the games coming up (like their late season trip to Atlanta) rather than the games that are already over.

The Giants may have enjoyed the best 4 game stretch last year but they were clearly not the best team in the league during 2011.

In today’s NFL, Roddy and Julio are better than Vic and Hakeem.

    Fact.

  42. justintuckrule says: Sep 29, 2012 12:08 PM

Roddy would be a wr3 on our team. He’d get the scraps left over by manninghams departure.

  43. ripseau says: Sep 29, 2012 12:08 PM

I could never understand how a team victory turns to an individual victory. The Giants had the best Team in colleague as proven by their ring but there’s no doubt that Julio Jones and roddy white are the best duo and has the potential to b one of the best duos ever. Julio and roddy are top 10 (maybe top 5) wars in the history of the league

  44. statusqoh says: Sep 29, 2012 12:09 PM

love how in a team sport ppl always wanna use a ring to evaluate an individual. and as for the 2 pt game… every year is a new year. the falcons finally shed the coordinators they had for the last 4 years who were more conservative then the tea party and more predictable than a Vick turnover. thats why they always did their best when in the no huddle when ryan called the plays but was still limited to the playbook given.

  45. ripseau says: Sep 29, 2012 12:10 PM

*in the league not history. Damon phones crazy talking lol

  46. mtgblue1979 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:12 PM

Not even close. Roddy white is a good wr who used to be elite and Julio is a monster where as Cruz and nicks are both monsters. Cruz can run and catch rings around shoddy white. So can nicks.

  47. birdbrainsnj says: Sep 29, 2012 12:17 PM

Giants secondary has struggled against subpar passing attacks. This should be a high scoring game. I think Atlanta had the better d right now so I’m going with falcons.

  48. profish13 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:18 PM

I wish players would talk less and let their play define them. Even if he is right, that on paper theyre the best duo, its meaningless. Last time I checked, games arent played on paper.

  49. filthymcnasty1 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:18 PM

I guess the Falcon homers can take pride in Roddy’s opinion of himself. But until they decide to throw you a ticker tape parade for having an over inflated ego, I won’t be impressed.

    Win something.

  50. bmorefalcon says: Sep 29, 2012 12:21 PM

If you doubt Roddy, just check this weeks fantasy rankings for wide outs. Julio and Roddy are 4 and 5 overall. Hakeem doesn’t play more that 9 games a year because he is made of glass. Last week a brand new receiver on the Giants took all of Cruz’s catches.

    What does that say?

  51. kingpel says: Sep 29, 2012 12:23 PM

Sorry Roddy. Putting up numbers against weak defensive teams isnt that impressive. The next time you show up in a big game, will be the first time you show up in a big game.

  52. daknight93 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:26 PM

falcons are having a fast 3-0 start and want to trash talk…these guys haven’t accomplished anything yet…falcons get no respect until they win a playoff game…regular season success is meaningless, it’s all about getting victories in the postseason and last time I checked..the falcons are 0-3 in the playoffs

  53. timebandit24 says: Sep 29, 2012 12:26 PM

all this trash talking on here is so ridiculous. last time I checked, winning the superbowl last year doesn’t do a single thing for this year. If it did, you wouldn’t have gotten pushed around by the cowboys. by that same principle, losing in the playoffs last year means jack squat. All you loud mouth giants fans who talk about last year…why aren’t you talking about how you didn’t make the playoffs the year before. or maybe how philly whipped your butts in the first round the year after the superbowl. maybe we can talk about how you have a 4 game lead in the division in 09 and lost it to the cowboys and didn’t make the playoffs…I dont know.

Giants are still world champs until someone knocks us off so yeah we get to talk all the smack we want until somebody else is crowned. And guess what, Giants are even better than last year and on there way to another title…………#Face!

  64. ramza86 says: Sep 29, 2012 1:24 PM

I do think Roddy and Julio are the best tandem in the league. Roddy is talkin like hes the best WR on the team, nah, its Julio.

Oh well, nobody cares about duos, people care about rings. Victor Cruz 1 ring. Roddy White 0 rings.

  65. kingkreg12 says: Sep 29, 2012 1:36 PM

Cruz had a solid year, but he’s done it for one year. I don’t think he is physical enough to be as solid outside as White.

White has been elite for years, not like its his fault the team didn’t make the big show. Wrs can’t really run their mouths about having rings since many times hey have little to do with it(Cruz is a good example of a player having little impact in the SB).

Giants fans also love to fall back on the fact that they have 2 rings that were aided by miracles instead of actual dominance. Etc: tyree miracle play in 07 after Brady puts the Pats up late in the 4th. Last year was aided heavily by two miraculous fumbles against a Niners team that Seriously outplayed them, and being fortunate enough to recover 3 fumbles and watch Welker drop a pass that woulda sealed it.

Not to take anything away from the wins but they always have a ton of luck when they win, moreso that other teams in recent memory.

To the original point, I don’t like when players fall back on rings. If Cruz backs up last year with another good year then I will buy him as an elite WR.

I understand no one wants to respect the falcons I’m used to that but fact of the matter is that this team this year has a whole new pulse as an offensive powerhouse and we will only get better. Matty ice is hungry this year it’s no coincidence that he’s the best playing qb so far this year. Don’t worry little haters falcons will have a playoff win. Cruz is the butter fingers this year (Dallas game was ugly) roddy only had a significant number of drops cause he was most targeted in the league last year. He and Julio are both stepping up their game (not that they weren’t already one of the best duos). Roddy is more reliable than nicks and as far as freakish athletic ability you’ll take Julio over Cruz any day. NFC south on lock playoff wins on the way mark my words falcons 6-0 as well

The Cowboys are consistently the biggest underachievers, year after year.

5 sbs, but nowhere close to one, and the Giants (I’m not a fan of either team), have won twice since the ‘girls’ won one.

Who cares what you did over 16 years ago. They haven’t done squat since.

And as far as Roddy White. I’d rather have SB rings, than be seen as one of the top receivers in the league, whose team has done nothing to date. All the stats during the regular season don’t mean a damn thing, as the playoffs are a different beasts, which the Falcons have yet to conquer.

That’s right, let’s put outside forces in control of a physical game. Tyree didn’t catch the ball, it magically stuck to the top of his helmet. The Niners didn’t out play them, they lost. No such thing as outplaying a team, when the game is decided on the scoreboard. Fate, miracles, etc, are just poor excuses. By your logic, the only reason why the Niners beat GB this year, is because of the miracle that Rodgers didn’t throw for 500 yards and 6 tds.

Cruz and Nicks are the best tandem in the NFC, maybe the league, when healthy. Mega is just one man! Jennings and Nelson aren’t. Roddy is a bum, Jones is the best wideout on the team! Name a better tandem?….waiting, waiting,..there isn’t one!

  77. cpo187 says: Sep 29, 2012 2:44 PM

The hardware does all the talking. Can’t argue with him.

  78. jvillenole says: Sep 29, 2012 3:18 PM

Looking at it as a fan on neither team (although much respect for both), I would agree with Roddy White. I don’t think what he said was trash talk. It is 100% true that Cruz is more of a slot type of receiver, again, not a knock on Cruz…he is a STUD.

But, Jones and White are the best tandem in the league, and if Matt Ryan can keep this pace up, the Superbowl will have to go through Atlanta. The Falcons are that good.

  79. stonedolphin89 says: Sep 29, 2012 3:46 PM

Everyone seems to be under the impression that Cruz was using his ring as proof that he’s an elite WR and/or that the ring makes he and Nicks the better duo. I’m pretty sure all the comment meant was that Cruz is less concerned with personal titles and more concerned with the only title that really matters. It was a mature play. Seems to have gone over the heads of most people in this thread though.

It’s funny the “Big Boys” weren’t so big VS. The Giants in the playoffs last year. Shut it Roddy.

  81. situsavaisprier says: Sep 29, 2012 4:30 PM

Funny thing is Cruz plays outside more than people think. He may run routes that go inside quite a bit, but he also runs routes on the outside. Giants line him up in numerous places and have him do plenty of different things.

I’m a Giants fan and I have thought about Cruz and Nicks and their ranking. I think that they arguable are the best, espcially considering last year there was no running game and teams knew that the Giants had to pass. Not discrediting other teams, but it’s tougher when a team knows you are weaker doing one thing. We’ll see how each pair does this year.

there’s no doubt that Julio Jones and roddy white are the best duo and has the potential to b one of the best duos ever

The city of Atlanta, it’s people as well as its teams have the worse case of inferiority complex I have EVER witnessed. They spend all their time trying to be a NY or LA when in truth they are a poor man’s Minneapolis. No other major metro around for 500 miles. Get over yourselves and get ready for your 1st round MLB exit in October and in January in the playoffs.
Oh if only General Sherman were here!!
    ————————————————————

Actually, the reason why you feel this way isn’t because Atlanta is trying to be anything like an LA or NY. It’s just that there’s so many people from LA and NY trying to move down here that it’s getting pretty tiring. Believe me: Anyone wants to be LA or NY should move there for a little while. It’s no question as to why people are leaving those places and moving to places like Atlanta.

But I will say that all that a ring tells you is that you are a former champion. Congratulations on that former season. Oh, and while we’re talking about more recent former things- congratulations on your loss against Dallas in your stadium. And, whew! You’re happy to escape from Tampa Bay, too- right?

Hmmmm … Giant fans always counter what with how many rings the franchise has? Could it be Eagle fans that try to flap about regular season win streaks & their record against division foes? Then they miss the playoffs.

Only teams without Super Bowl titles have a problem understanding Championships are all that matter. Don’t be mad that after 6 NFC championship games & 2 Super Bowl appearances you guys still don’t have any.

It’s all good though, Philly fans can keep talking about their regular season win streaks & Giant fans will keep counting Lombardi’s.

Let the stats tell the tale:

Last season, Cruz outpaced both Jones and White for yards and TDs. His 82 catches were 28 higher than Jones, but 18 lower than White. But his 1,536 yards eclipsed White by 240 yards on those 18 fewer catches: a difference of 5.77 yards-per-catch. He outpaced Jones by almost a full yard-per-catch. And he did all this only after breaking out in Week 3 – having done pretty much nothing the first 2 weeks of the season. AND he outscored both of them by a TD. All this while competing for touches with both Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham. Cruz was the third WR and he set franchise records last season.

    2011 summary:
    Cruz 82 rec, 1,536 yards, 9 TDs
    White 100 rec, 1,296 yards, 8 TDs
    Jones 54 rec, 959 yards, 8 TDs.

2012 is going similarly. Cruz has 23 catches to White’s 19 and Jone’s 15. He has 279 yards (White: 244, Jones: 189). Jones is winning the TD battle, I’ll give him that.

But Cruz is outperforming both Jones and White on an individual basis. He’s drawing all the coverage with Nicks sidelined by injuries, and doesn’t have Manningham on the other side to draw attention away. Sure, Barden and Bennett have stepped up, but the focus has been on Cruz, and he’s still performing.

Throw in the fact that Cruz is an undrafted guy that worked his way up from the bottom, and I’ll pick him and his work ethic over Jones and White ANY day. White took 4 years to become relevant, and Jones has no excuse to not look great with White and Gonzalez commanding so much attention.

    Cruz takes the contest easily.

White/jones play on the carpet. Put up two points outdoors in playoffs. Fake tough guys.

  88. vickinabox says: Sep 29, 2012 6:56 PM

let me tell you son, you got the whole thing wrong son. there no hatred involved here son. its about these pathetic arm chair quarterbacks who cry and brag about history all day and can’t take a bit of critiquing of their own teams. thats it son.

Not only does Cruz have a ring but he and the Giants flat out embarrassed Roddy White and the rest of the Falcons on their way to get that ring Cruz is talking about.

You know, for all the smart people acting like Cruz is going to the old “I got a ring defense”. It’s a little more than that when you specifically exerted your will against the player you’re talking back to.

    Just sayin.

  92. torontofalcon says: Sep 30, 2012 12:55 AM

All giants fans are morons seriously can you read?? Roddy said theyre the best duo right NOW. He didnt say Atl was a better team, nor did he say falcons beat them selves vs the giants. NY fans get of your high horse the last 10 yrs your team has sucked for 8. Not even patriot fans parade around websites commenting about their rings. Finally Cruz was invisible vs ATL, if you watched the game youd realize that Falcons had no time to throw thanks to your unreal Dline, and Eli and that Dline won him that ring. Cruz only shows up vs bad pass defense (cowboys of last year, eagles, panthers and bucs this year) no disrespect but ive never seen one fan base get hyped over two ring. Yall turning into cowboys fans…

  93. axespray says: Sep 30, 2012 1:53 AM

As a Packer Fan; I fear Cruz and Nicks more than Roddy and Julio … Plus, Playing outdoors against actual defenses compared to playing in a bunch of warm weather/dome games against the garbage NFC South defenses… smh.

Cruz/Nicks(or whoever fills in for him) > Julio/Roddy….

  94. dontlikecravens says: Sep 30, 2012 8:26 AM

Wallace and Brown in Pittsburgh make both Atlanta’s and New York’s duos look second rate and like tpa43 says above, except for the Browns, anyone in the AFC North looks better than either of those guys.

Both of those guys need to get over themselves.

  95. gtwhitfield says: Oct 1, 2012 10:15 PM

When things like this happen, I always wonder…what is the “right” answer for some? Should Cruz have said, “yes, he is right. I’m sorry for my success.” I don’t get it. Had White commented strictly on who was the better duo, there’s no issue. That’s not an argument that has a right answer…it’s subjective. However, he took a shot at Cruz. So Cruz, who I figure is a smart man, knows he doesn’t have the tenure that White does, so he’s not going to go toe to toe on numbers …he uses the one thing that separates him from White…rings, and that’s a legit angle. If he said, well I have more yards than him so far this year, that would be a lame response, so I don’t see the issue with what Cruz said.

  96. discosucs2005 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:22 AM

“Roddy white pushes off every play”

The same can be said for most of the great WRs; except Jerry Rice because there was no one within arms reach of him.

  97. n0hopeleft says: Oct 4, 2012 11:14 AM

    Giants fans are morons?

But a Falcons WR, that put up ZERO points in the biggest game of his life, is insulting a man on the other team, who dominated throughout the postseason?

Please tell me how Giants fans are morons.

There is still some serious jealousy coming from everywhere around the country towards NY.

Cruz was invisible – so was your entire offense loser.

I bet the same people here saying White can talk, despite not winning in the playoffs, wouldn’t let Lebron get away with saying something similar without a ring.

Maybe Roddy White is right (he’s great btw), but Victor Cruz’s response was fine. What else was he supposed to say? “No…we are the best duo”

Not to mention that cruz is pretty good.

  100. herrerabrad says: Oct 5, 2012 9:35 AM

I am a die hard Giants fan, and Nicks and Cruz are a great tandem, BUT….Nicks can never stay healthy the whole season every year, and Cruz is seems kind of sporadic. If I had the choice with the best QB to throw, …I WOULD probably take White and Jones….neither one really has a weakness….
