Getty ImagesThough there’s no reason at this point to believe that an NFL team will be moving to Los Angeles for 2013, the powers-that-be at AEG are ready to accommodate one, if it comes to that.
Asked by our pal Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times whether he expects a team to apply for relocation in 2013, AEG president Tim Leiweke said this: “In order for us to play in this game, we have to be prepared to be able to accept a team next year.”
Leiweke sidestepped the question, which called for a “yes” or a “no” answer. The specific content of his response could prompt speculation that the answer, if given, would have been “yes”.
And if a team moves to L.A. next year, it would play in the Coliseum or the Rose Bowl until Farmers Field is built.
If a team makes the move in 2013, the Chargers become the top candidate. Asked when he last talked to the Chargers, Leiweke said, “I haven’t talked to [owner] Dean Spanos in a long time.”
That’s another subtly (and brilliantly) evasive response. The Chargers have plenty of other employees to whom Leiweke could be talking. And Leiweke didn’t say whether he has been talking to any of them.
If any team is coming in 2013, it’s the Chargers. And, surely, someone within AEG has been talking to them.
