The Jets offense hasn’t impressed too many people over the last two weeks and they’ll have to snap that trend without two key parts of the passing game on Sunday.
Tight end Dustin Keller and wide receiver Stephen Hill will both miss the game with injuries. Keller was on the wrong side of a game-time decision for the third straight week due to a hamstring injury that’s robbed Mark Sanchez of one of his favorite targets. Hill hurt his hamstring in Miami last weekend and was listed as doubtful heading into the game with coach Rex Ryan all but officially ruling him out on Friday.
The Jets will miss Hill because they don’t have another receiver who will take as much attention away from Santonio Holmes. Hill has had a rocky start, but his ability to get deep in a hurry means defenses have to keep an eye on him and that can open things up underneath. With the passing game so diminished, it will be interesting to see if the Jets look to Tim Tebow any more often this week.
Jeff Cumberland will see the bulk of the tight end snaps with Keller out. He has seven catches for 71 yards on the season. Chaz Schilens will start in place of Hill, with Jeremy Kerley likely seeing a bigger role as well.
The 49ers defense was going to be a tough enough mountain for the Jets to climb at full strength. It’s looking like an even worse matchup for them right now.
