Vikings amazingly move to 3-1

Adrian Peterson AP

Through four weeks, the Vikings have matched their entire win total for the 2011 season.

They got to three victories on Sunday with a 20-13 win over the Lions in Detroit, snapping a three-game losing streak to the Lions and moving to 1-0 in the division after going 0-6 against the NFC North last season.

The Vikings held on after the Lions cut the lead in half, and then had a chance to force overtime.  Detroit couldn’t get anything going, with the drive petering out before the Lions could even get to the 50.

Minnesota continues to give Adrian Peterson heavy reps.  He had 21 carries for 102 yards on the day, his first 100-yard game of the season.

The Vikings had only 111 passing yards from quarterback Christian Ponder.  Fifty of them came from receiver Jerome Simpson in his debut with the Vikings, after missing the first three games of the season due to a suspension.

The Vikings have a chance to go to 4-1 next weekend, when the Titans come to town.

Too bad they can’t play the lions special teams unit every week. The vikes won’t make the playoffs. But congrats coach frazier on your first win against an nfc north opponent.

  5. bantry1234 says: Sep 30, 2012 4:24 PM

But the “real” refs are back. They’ll start screwing the Vikings over again next week. And the Packers and Patriots will now start scoring 50 points a game again. Thank god the “integrity” of the game is back.

The defense really cleaned things up since the debacle against the Colts. I like the new D coordinator and rookie Josh Robinson is already better than all the other scrubs from last year like Asher Allen. Ponder is smart and has great ball security, I remember when Favre first came in that’s all he was asked to do. Play competently at QB and let Adrian and the defense take care of the rest. It looks like we have gotten back to that identity this year and it makes for the Vikings to always remain in the game with turnover and time of possession advantages.

Jerome Simpson also had a bigger influence on this game than his stat line indicates with multiple deep ball pass interference calls, I’m excited to see him make an immediate impact in his first game.

  10. tremoluxman says: Sep 30, 2012 4:36 PM

They really should be 4-0, but gave the one loss away through truly stupid play. I don’t mind a team losing if they are out muscled, out coached, or because they just don’t have the talent. What grates me is losing through stupid play and avoidable penalties.

  11. apooster says: Sep 30, 2012 4:40 PM

@bantry1234 … completely agree. Watch the Packers, Patriots, Steelers now get every call their way.

Regardless, Alan Williams deserves some credit for turning this Vikings defense around (minus that late TD they gave to the Lions).

  12. goldrush36 says: Sep 30, 2012 4:41 PM

But it was so humiliating that the 49ers fell trap to them last week huh? No what’s humiliating is Buffalo giving up 48 points to the yets

  13. toledolions says: Sep 30, 2012 4:42 PM

It’s not amazing. They beat the Lions. Stafford is terrible, the coaching is worse, and the o-line might be the oldest and slowest in the NFL.

  14. goldrush36 says: Sep 30, 2012 4:47 PM

They are vastly underrated…. meanwhile the vastly overrated team they played poetically fell to 1-3. This Bud’s for you mjkelly, use it to wash down those tears. I think people forget this team is only a couple years removed from being a powerhouse SB contender that really only lost their QB and an overrated WR as far as roster turnover. Peterson is back and Ponder is on the rise

  15. thepvyharvin says: Sep 30, 2012 4:53 PM

Amazing? No,,,we have added key players in the draft and free agency. We are a different team than last year. If the oline and defense keeps improving, sky’s the limit ,,

More proof positive about what I keep saying.

Crappy team wins a few games, thinks they’re going to the Super Bowl.

The Vikings still won’t be above .500. Believing in more makes you silly.

  19. ocdn says: Sep 30, 2012 5:28 PM

Congrats to the Vikes. The Lions give up another game due to “Special Ed” teams. 1-3 to start is unacceptable. If special teams coach and players heads don’t roll, then Swartz’s should.

  20. VikesPrincess (Lisa) says: Sep 30, 2012 5:33 PM

I think this is funny. While the Vikings’ offense was a whole lot of meh, the D looked good and no one else has a Percy Harvin. (Hint to the Packers: Cobb is no Harvin).

I do love how people come here and trash a team just because their team (i.e. Packers, Lions) isn’t living up to the hype. Makes me laugh.

  25. lionbloodwinning says: Sep 30, 2012 5:50 PM

Not to take anything away from the Vikings…because they won fair and square…nothing to complain about…no bad calls or anything of that nature…but the most frustrating thing…is if I told you the Lions’ offense scored 13 points and the defense gave up six…and the vikings defense didn’t score any points…you’d think the Lions won the game…oh but special teams is actually a real factor in Lions’ games. While in other games…special teams is generally about field position…but the last two weeks…special teams has been the actual complete difference in the game. I am pretty dumbfounded as to how this unit continues to play so damn poorly. Oh…and…can the commentators please stop referring to Petigrew as a ‘weapon’? Dude seriously can’t catch.

  26. jimmysee says: Sep 30, 2012 5:54 PM

  28. lionbloodwinning says: Sep 30, 2012 5:56 PM

Oh and let’s not forget to mention that the OC is seemingly incapable of making adjustments to his game plan and figuring out how to be aggressive in getting other people the ball and getting the offense going early. I mean…it isn’t rocket science. Even if you just play Madden…you know when one approach isn’t working…you don’t play the whole game the same way…you make adjustments. He seems to be content with nothing for 3 quarters then urgency in the 4th. SMH

  29. lionbloodwinning says: Sep 30, 2012 5:58 PM

maybe they know something we don’t know…maybe they are trying to get in high draft pick position so they can get a few more playmakers for a superbowl run…hey…your guess is as good as mine.

    @ thetokyosandblaster

Yep, went back a double checked and sure enough, you’re the only one to include the words “Super Bowl” in their post. In fact, I don’t recall any Viking fan or player stating anything about the Super Bowl. Maybe I missed a few over zealous ones, but every team has them.

The Vikings just knocked off a second playoff team from last year, this one on the road. The first being a sound beating of the consensus #1 team. Some of their younger players are starting to produce. They just matched their win total from last year.

Please forgive the fans for feeling the rebuilding project is well on its way and probably in a shorter time then most thought.

They may very well end up under .500, but even a 7-9 record is a nice jump over 3-13.

But you keep on posting about the Super Bowl and claiming it’s Viking fans.

I’m here, joy boy. If only Jason Hanson was 32 years old and NOT 42 years old, he could boot the ball through the end zone. Minnesota didn’t beat the Lions. Their special team unit did. The Vikings have been lucky so far. It’s a long season.

  33. almanak209 says: Sep 30, 2012 6:11 PM

The Lions Special Teams has been horrendous for 3 years +, even Schwartz has said so. So why have they not replaced the ST coach ? Two weeks in a row you give up a kickoff and punt return for a TD. If the ST coach is not fired this week, I have no faith in the staff or front office anymore. And can they cut faircatch everything Logan already.

  34. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Sep 30, 2012 6:25 PM

Ponder took a step back today but still came through big with a perfectly placed 20-yard pass to Simpson to get a first down while trying to run out the clock. Still no interceptions on the season. Looks like the defense is much better than we thought, including the pass defense.

  35. thetokyosandblaster says: Sep 30, 2012 6:28 PM

Wait….what? That made ZERO sense. Whether you like it or not. Special Teams is 1/3 of a football game. (Off & Def the other 2/3) Obviously you know this otherwise you wouldn’t be so upset at your diseased special teams.

Umm so if we were “lucky” to beat SF, which the Lions could not, so what would that make the Lions? Even more unlucky? I’m not sayin the Vikes are bringin home Lombardi, BUT I am saying we are better than what ALL the NATIONAL “Experts” say/think. Ponder, although had a quiet game today, is better than the “Experts” think.

Why is it the Lions come out of nowhere last year, they are considered a good team, but when the Vikes are in the process of coming out of nowhere this year, they are considered “lucky”? Face it, we WON the last 2 games and like it or not, they r in first place.

  38. vikingfan1971 says: Sep 30, 2012 8:27 PM

yeah special teams is still part of the vikings so a win is a win who cares and the defense was doing okay ponder had neck problems earlier so that might have thrown him off some but we still in the end came up with the win
all you anti viking haters get over it we are at moment in the number 1 spot in our division like I said at the moment and I hope we can continue to keep it we have in the past so we can do it as long as they keep playing good
    skol vikings
ps lets get another win next week and be 4-1

  39. paochow says: Sep 30, 2012 8:31 PM

    Lucky- bah…

Fact 1: lions lost to 49ers
    Fact 2: Vikes beat 49ers
    Fact 3: Lions beat lions

At this point in season, Vikes are better than Lions.

  40. purplepridehasadownside says: Sep 30, 2012 9:00 PM

Forget the negatives and as (former) Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice said “Enjoy the season.”

    Go Vikings.

  41. purpleguy says: Sep 30, 2012 9:22 PM

People will look at the stats and say ignorant things like the Lions dominated yardage wise and special teams lost the game, failing to realize that once the Vikes had the lead, they went to the run-first game plan and a defensive scheme that gave the Lions short routes over the middle to run down the clock. Few will stress how the Lions were completely out-coached and that the yardage/stats were the result of a superior game plan.

  42. zygizag says: Sep 30, 2012 9:53 PM

Seeing how their next divisional game is not until Nov 11 when they see the Lions again this was a big win for the VIKES to finally win a divisional game.

Hats off to the Vikes. You won fair and square. As for my team, if the underperforming wasn’t bad enough, the Special teams have contributed to 3 losses and a fourth that could have been. Everyone focuses on the past 2 weeks, but the first 2 weeks they gave up a return in both games against the niners and rams, but lucked out due to a flag negating the returns. Can’t win spotting the other team 14 points

  47. vikefan says: Sep 30, 2012 11:19 PM

3 major factors going un noticed & contributing greatly to Vikings success.

    1. New kicker & special teams: new kicker has not only kicked game tying and winning field goals as a rookie in his first game, only missed 1 FG to date, he is also placing kickoffs in end zone with touchbacks @ 80% rate. opponents start @ 20 instead of 35 on average.

    2. Defense: major credit here tocoordinator Alan & unknown linebackers & secondary that is definetely getting job done right now to give line a great chance for making qb uncomfortable.

    3. QB Ponder is managing the game very well. Not necessarily making splash plays but not making turnovers & stupid mistakes. If the play aint there, let Kluwe punt to coffin corner & D do its job.

  48. jazz11001 says: Oct 1, 2012 12:22 AM

I love Jared Allen guys but we really have to work Everson Griffen into the game more. This guy has come up huge on back to back games with sacks and his speed is off the charts. Lord have Mercy on opposing QB’s when he has a starting role. Lets throw him in Robison’s spot and he a Allen can have lunch in the backfield…

  49. wiseguy12 says: Oct 1, 2012 12:32 AM

Prior to the season I predicted 8W-8L.
May have to adjust that upward. Vikings appear to be a vastly improved team while the rest of the division is playing below expectations. Vikings coaching is much better than expected.
New kicker is making major contributions and except for the coverage letdown last week, overall are doing well. Look for steady inprovement on defense. Peterson looks healthy Ponder is gaining confidence and if the offense begins to gel, look out.

At the beginning of the season, the question was asked, I think on NFLs FB site , what team has NO chance of playing in the Super Bowl? I DID NOT list the Vikes because I thought there was a possibility they could put it together. Most disagreed with me. Well, they have put it together, and even though it is still a work in progress, no one can knock the fact that they are 3-1 and totally handled one of the best team in football last week, the 49ers. They have had a solid season, and show weekly signs of improvement, so Vikes fans, good for you! Vikes team, good for you! It is actually a lot of fun to watch a season where most teams have a shot of winning any game. Gives you a reason to watch!
