Broncos lose J.D. Walton for season with broken ankle

The Broncos posted an impressive win yesterday, but they lost center J.D. Walton for the season with a broken ankle, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

The fourth-year center had only missed one snap in his career with the Broncos, prior to getting rolled up from behind in the 37-6 win against the Raiders.

With the Patriots up next on the schedule, the Broncos will turn to Dan Koppen to replace him in the middle.

Koppen was released by the Patriots after training camp, after starting 120 games for them over nine seasons.

Now he’ll go back in his old role, in his old home.

While teams like the Chiefs use players missing games as an excuse…..the Broncos say next man up:

    Chris Kuper
    Ty Warren
    Joe Mays
    Jason Hunter
    DJ Williams
    JD Walton

I don’t exactly see any Pro Bowlers in that group – the Chiefs lost 3 Pro Bowlers at the beginning of last season.

For the Broncos sake I hope Koppen figured out whatever his problem was in preseason. One year off and he completely forgot how to snap a football.

Koppen’s a big trouble against Wilfork.

Wouldn’t that be his new role in his old home? His old role was starting center for the Patriots.

looks like Koppen is gonna get a trial by fire type of entry goin up against Wilfork/Love next week.

he’s still a serviceable center, but i have my doubts after he couldn’t even make it onto a depleted pats O-line.

Koppen was really bad all training camp and during the preseason. Belichick is going to line up Wilfork right over Koppen all game and if the Broncos don’t double and maybe even triple team him (like the Bills were doing this week) then Manning is going to be under siege all game long.

I respect the job Koppen did for the Patriots but he’s a player who’s way past his prime.

Koppen played very well over the years for the Pats.

Like sullijo1 said, you have teams who play the next guy line of an injury, and you have those who make excuses when their season is lost. Doesn’t matter if they’re probowlers or not, if a starter get injured, the next guy should come in andplay at the same higher level.
