The reason the ref's had such a hard time is that this is not football anymore. The changes that Rozelle and Godell have done to the game have ruined it. The college game is so much closer to the original game of football. New rules every year, crazy rules that really don't make any sense, except for TV ratings and advertising. This will be flag football in 10 years if Godell stays in charge.

"Are we STILL kicking this dead horse MDS? C’mon dude. The scabs may have been in over their head, but they kept the game of football on the TV screen. Where are the articles about that?…or about how poorly the regs performed this past weekend"

OF COURSE!! Not 1 mention (let alone article) of the bad calls from the refs this weekend. Back to the tick tack pass interference calls from before. I think it pretty clearly shows that this site never gave them a chance from the beginning. Keep pretending though.

"And now, thankfully, the game of football is going on without the officials who didn’t have time to learn all the rules in the NFL."

I wish I could say thankfully we don't have to hear anymore of your snarky little comments about how you were against the replacement refs from the beginning but I'm wrong. I do like how you can criticize the replacements to no end but if we dare point out mistakes in your reports comments get deleted instantly. Think skin much?

The owners and GODdell are to blame for throwing these guys into the fire without proper training and for trying to bully others by locking the refs out this year. The previous year, the owners locked out the players. The workers did NOT go on strike.

That said, the media, and specifically PFT, needs to scrutinize the regular refs with the same ferocious tenacity they did with the replacement refs. Fair's fair. The NFL also needs to hold the refs accountable and review their performance after so many games. the integrity of the game is at stake here.

They may have caused my team to lose a game, maybe two but the regulars do it all the time too. In fact they have looked pretty amateur so far. I liked the replacements and their “let ‘em play” attitude. And being from St. Louis, hearing Hughes say “St. Louie” was pretty cool, like he was from the UK or Deep South or something. I also thought it was great when one of them called a penalty on the “Red” team. Good stuff.

The only people who liked the scab refs are delusional fans of awful teams. There was a chance the scabs could screw up in their team's favor, or if they lost they had an easy scapegoat. Plus they get to maintain this delusion that the real refs play favorites and that's why teams like New England and Green Bay are always successful (not because, you know, they have good players and coaches.)

Those of us who actually root for contenders want the best officials on the field. There are always going to be missed calls, but you're crazy if you didn't notice an obvious difference this week -- not just in the flags thrown but separating scuffles after the whistle, making calls quickly without huddling for five minutes.

And Bills fans: you don't get to cry about the refs when you lose by three touchdowns and let up 45 points in a half.

The main differences are speed and decisiveness. The replacement refs took longer and were less decisive.

But let's be honest- I watched the games this last week. Were there blown calls? You betcha! The only difference is that instead of lingering and carping over them, the announcers just breezed by them.

Pro football's a hard game to call. The story no one wants to cover is that the real refs aren't that much better. But they are more legitimate. So, there's that.

"The Redskins aren’t 4-0 because of the scab referees"

No, that's not it. They're not 4-0 because they don't have Rex Grossman starting anymore!

You know what though the media gave for the most part the regular ref's free passes. For the 1st 3 weeks every time there was a mistake they ran it up a pole. I have the ticket and I saw dozens of missed calls, some of them changing games. Example NY/Philly Pass interference, yea right. Hardly no outrage heard week 4. Where;s the hate now!

And now, thankfully, the game of football is going on without the officials who didn’t have time to learn all the rules in the NFL.

Instead, it is going on with officials who ignore the rules (Why s offenive PI no longer a penalty?), call them different for different player (why does vick take shots to the head all game with no penalty, but guys can't breathe on Brady wrong without a flag?), and playing their personal favorites.

The ONLY difference in the officials this week, was how much bloggers like you, Mr Smith, cried about them. If anything, I found this weeks calls much worse than what went on last week. The biggest missed call the week before? A debatable hail mary, the biggest miss call this week? an obvious fumble, which after replay was upheld, or an obvious stop where Brady was a good yard and a half short....replay and they still give it to him.

Refs in this league are a joke, and should be replaced

say what you want about the replacement refs, but it's because they stepped in that we could start the season on time which was better than cancelling games due to a lockout. these guys were put on the spot and keep football going cause their bosses were intimidated by the NFL Official's Union to step in their boss' position. the real problem was Goodell and ownership

Ridiculous. The first three games of the season should not count. There were so many bad calls and missed calls that there is no way to know who "actually" won a significant percentage of those games. I bet at least 2-3 games week could have easily gone the other way if the proper calls were being made.

I wonder if the Scab refs would have called that ridiculous ticky tacky P.I on Nnamdi on 3rd down to keep the Giants in the game and setup an easy FG. What a joke. Thankfully some idiot decided to molest Nnamdi a play later to bring it back.
