Report: Jets fear Santonio Holmes is done for the season

San Francisco 49ers v New York Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - SEPTEMBER 30: Santonio Holmes #10 of the New York Jets writhes on the turf after fumbling a ball picked up by Carlos Rogers #22 of the San Francisco 49ers during a game at MetLife Stadium on September 30, 2012 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Entering the year, you could have made a pretty strong argument that the two most talented players on the Jets roster were Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes.

Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson might have gotten a few votes and Antonio Cromartie almost certainly would have voted for himself, but there weren’t too many other choices on the roster. As a result, it speaks volumes about how the season has started for the Jets to see Revis out until at least the Super Bowl and to learn that the Jets fear Holmes will also miss the rest of the regular season.

The team still hasn’t gotten word on what the specific injury is to Holmes’ foot, but Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the team fears it is going to sideline him for the rest of 2012. They are already talking about Holmes’ absence in terms of weeks, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see that transform into months once the team has a handle on the diagnosis and prognosis for Holmes’ injury and recovery.

Mehta also passes along word that it is unlikely that the Jets will reach out to Plaxico Burress in an effort to replace Holmes on the roster. Per Mehta, the team feels Burress’ presence would hinder Mark Sanchez and that they wouldn’t consider a second tour of duty for the veteran.

A receiving corps of Jeremy Kerley, Chaz Schilens, Stephen Hill and Patrick Turner also hinders Sanchez, although there’s not much the Jets can do about their offseason roster choices at this point in the proceedings.
