Browns have injury problems at receiver, too

With the Jets losing receiver Santonio Holmes for the season, some have suggested that they should try to swing a trade with the team that helped bring Mark Sanchez to town three years ago.

The Browns, whose top-five pick in 2009 resulted in the Jets landing Sanchez, aren’t thrilled with the inability of receiver Greg Little to catch the ball consistently. So the Browns should send him to the Jets and further build for the future, right?

Apart from the fact that the current power structure in Cleveland may not be around to use any draft picks that could be obtained via trading Little, the Browns need him. As recently explained by Jeff Schudel of the Morning Journal, three wideouts missed Monday’s practice with injury. Mohamed Massaquoi has a lingering hamstring problem, Josh Cribbs suffered a concussion against the Ravens, and Travis Benjamin has an undisclosed injury.

After Tuesday’s off day, the Browns will convene for practice on Wednesday, and it’ll be important to scan the injury report for updates on all three players. If none will be available for Sunday’s game against the Giants, Little becomes even more important to the offense.

And even if/when all receivers return to 100 percent, Little remains critical to the effort to win enough games to avoid a house cleaning. Nothing the Jets can give the Browns in return for Little will do that.

Then again, nothing anyone could give the Browns could do that, up to and including a deal that would bring Tom Brady to Berea.
