Rex Ryan confirms Santonio out for the season, needs surgery

Jets coach Rex Ryan announced the expected Wednesday, saying wide receiver Santonio Holmes would be placed on injured reserve with his Lisfranc injury, and will need surgery, according to multiple reports.

The Jets are signing wide receiver Jason Hill to take his roster spot, but the reality of the situation is beginning to dawn on them.

They’ve now lost their best defensive player and best offensive player, and it’s barely October.

It does check the resolve of your team,” Ryan said during his press conference, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The Jets are still 2-2, but if there’s ever been a less enthusiastic 2-2 I can’t remember it.

With the undefeated Texans up next, it could be the last they see of .500 or better for some time.

Does this mean that there’s not even a “0.0002% chance” Santonio Holmes will be able to play in Super Bowl XLVII?

  2. flowadelph says: Oct 3, 2012 12:29 PM

Cromartie is now the best receiver on the team

  3. seattlerogueburner says: Oct 3, 2012 12:30 PM

Should have kept that hot sauce in the cupboard, Rex.

  4. thenewenglandpatriots12 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:30 PM

This sucks because it gives sanchez an excuse to suck … 5th overall pic in the draft and hes still playing like this after 4 years? They shouldve offered peyton 200 million…

  5. norseyapper says: Oct 3, 2012 12:30 PM

And yet Rex will by the end of the week predict greatness for Jason Hill, confidnece in Mark Sanchez, hint that there is great trickery ahead in the use of Tim Tebow, that he is the greatest defensive mind in the history of the game, and that he – by the force of pure will – is going to see this team in the Super Bowl!!!

  6. bobl242 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:31 PM

At least Rex will have a good excuse now for why the team stinks, although they stunk before these injuries.

  7. lightcleric says: Oct 3, 2012 12:31 PM

Just go all out and make this team the circus Woody Johnson made it into.

    Tebow Time!

    Bring back Wayne Chrebet!!!!

  9. all4patriots says: Oct 3, 2012 12:32 PM

    Depth matters.

Trading away all of those draft picks in recent years, mostly to acquire expensive veterans, is about to bite them in a HUGE way.

2-2 now, but I see 6-10 in their future.

  12. whatnojets says: Oct 3, 2012 12:34 PM

Cut Tebow and add another WR!!!

  13. dogman9 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:35 PM

    Addition by subtraction.

    S. Hill and Kerley can make names for themselves, and getting Dustin Keller back at TE who is their best receiver helps big-time.

  14. hor2012 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:35 PM

I feel bad for any player that gets hurt. And I wish Santonio well. But, I don’t think this is that big of a deal for the team as a whole. I think we can agree that the lest of the Jets problems is losing Santonio for the year.

  15. cbs1971 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:36 PM

Wow..Revis and now Holmes. Sucks to be a jets fan right now.

  16. clownsfan says: Oct 3, 2012 12:36 PM

As bad as Rex is as a HC I think Tannenbaum is to blame here. He did nothing this offseason to improve this team offensively.

  17. bobonmycob says: Oct 3, 2012 12:36 PM

I’m going to laugh so hard if they start Tebow and he hands the Texans a beating LOL

  18. paepae805 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:37 PM

Can we say T.O. may be landing in New York

  19. whatnojets says: Oct 3, 2012 12:37 PM

At this rate,we wont have the original 53 that started the season by the time the season ends!

Cut them all and sign the replacement refs!!!

  20. srcnsd says: Oct 3, 2012 12:37 PM

How ironic…a foot injury is the final nail in the coffin for the Jets’ season.

  21. eaglesnoles05 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:38 PM

Houston 765 – NYJ 3 is my score prediction.

  22. tooz72 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:39 PM

“i guarantee you, if Santonio was healthy all year, we would have won the SB” – Skinny Rex

  23. whatjusthapped says: Oct 3, 2012 12:45 PM

Hate to see anyone hurt but all it does is mask the fact that the Jets really do suck. Now they just suck even more.

  24. lumpyf says: Oct 3, 2012 12:47 PM

Maybe if Rex and his wife kiss Santonio’s foot, it will heal faster.

  25. jm91rs says: Oct 3, 2012 12:52 PM

The good thing is that Tebow doesn’t need a receiver when he just runs it himself half the snaps. With Santonio out he won’t be able to complain about Tebow’s inability to give him the ball.

Finish the season with Tebow doing what he does, playing terrible quarterback yet somehow winning games. This is going to be a fun circus act to watch.

  26. taintedsaints2009 says: Oct 3, 2012 12:56 PM

Tebow will beat the Texans. and then he’ll beat the broncos in the playoffs somehow.

    Just for hilarity.

  27. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Oct 3, 2012 12:58 PM

The fun of watching the Jests for the rest of the season will be the Rex comments after each loss. This week the Texans are motivated to run up the score after years of not being able to and the lack of respect and publicity they have had to deal.

Each and every team on their schedule will want to hand it to the big mouthed posseurs. J E T S, dead, dead, dead.

  28. boiler72 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:07 PM

This is another reminder, at how incredible it was, that the Packers won a Super Bowl, with 15 players on IR – 4 of whom, were starters. Then both Woodson and Drive get hurt in the SB. Whether you hate the Packers or not, that feat remains amazing.

  29. peytonsneck18 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:09 PM

    RIP Jets!!!

  30. rc33 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:12 PM

Rex needs to start flapping his gums again. This humble, unassuming Rex Ryan thing just ain’t working for me.
Bottom line: they played for the “now” the past 3 years (i.e. beat New England) and they gave it a pretty good run. But as a result, they’ve now got a roster that’s clearly past it’s prime and a slew of bad contracts.
And whatever “can’t wait” mojo they had from a couple seasons ago is long gone.
$7.5 million GUARANTEED for locker room cancer Santonio Holmes next year? Better you than us.

  31. ncsteeler says: Oct 3, 2012 1:18 PM

Lisfranc can be a very serious injury for a speed player – it doesn’t take much to loose a step. I liked Holmes as a Steeler and wish him all the best but worry that he may not be the same next season.

  32. hehateme2 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:19 PM

I wonder if the hapless jets will continue to get this much media attention when they’re 4-12?

  33. hehateme2 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:26 PM

This team simply doesn’t pass the “eye test.” They can run nor stop the run, can’t pass with any measure of consistancy and with Mevis out, will not stop the pass as well.

As for the QB… wow, I didn’t think he could look any worse than last year but I was wrong. He’s playing scared and was never the right pick to begin with. To give him a big $ extension will haunt their cap as he continues to sprial downwards.

It looks like those two much talked about playoff trips may have been it, too bad.

Least I can get some sleep Monday night.

  35. honeybadger14 says: Oct 3, 2012 1:40 PM

Season was over when they announced Sparano as OC.

Rex Ryan should be hooked for that decision.

  36. bloodisred says: Oct 3, 2012 1:47 PM

T.O., Plax and Chad — 3 for 1 price and probably close to 2500 yds combined (depending on Sanchize).

    bobonmycob says:

“I’m going to laugh so hard if they start Tebow and he hands the Texans a beating LOL”

Yes, that would be hilarious. Unfortunately for you and Jets fans, you won’t be laughing much as there is NO WAY on God’s green earth that the Texans lose to the Jets Monday night.
And don’t tell me about Tebow beating the Texans two seasons ago when he was in Denver. That was a completely different Texans defense back then.

  39. jetstizzi85 says: Oct 3, 2012 2:20 PM

@ dogman9 – couldnt agree more. Keller IMO was and is the best Offensive weapon we have when we use him that right way.

  40. BeachBum46 says: Oct 3, 2012 2:29 PM

It wouldn’t be any better if Holmes and Revis were both playing, with Sanchez or Tebow at QB the Jets are going nowhere.

  41. reticarga says: Oct 3, 2012 3:13 PM

“They’ve now lost their best defensive player and best offensive player”

Holmes is not the best offensive player. Nick Mangold is.

  42. jetsareajoke says: Oct 3, 2012 8:08 PM

I wonder if wake and bake is mad because they put him on IR and not Revis. Is Rexy saying there’s less than 0.002 percent chance he’ll heal by the superbowl?
