Although I’m a huge Vikings fan, Jared Allen has always been overrated. He waits until there is a 3rd string LT, then racks up his sack numbers. Tell me how many sacks he has recorded against legitimate starting LTs in the past few years. Not many… I like him, but he’s simply an overrated DE, imo…

Jared Allen is a cornerstone piece on what, so far, has been an improved defense. What criticisms can you honestly or fairly level at the guy? If you want to say he’s opportunistic in taking advantage of an under skilled match-up from time to time, more power to him. A sack is a sack, period.

I’ll only consider it a disappointing season for him if he doesn’t hit double digit sacks this year.

He has more sacks then Ware since ’07, and Ware is regarded as one of the best in the game. He actually leads everyone in sacks since then… I dont think every team in the past 5 years has played there 3rd string tackles. Find a new team to hate on

That said, he is getting more help this year on defense, and the entire team seems to be much better.

Allen’s stats of 22 sacks on a team with the league’s worst pass defense on a team with a 3-13 record last year might be one of the most incredible accomplishments any defensive player has ever put up.

Last year’s secondary was atrocious, and most of the time the Vikings were either behind, or far behind. It’s not like teams had to pass to beat them, but when they did, if they had time, the QBs would light up the secondary. How Allen ever managed 22 sacks on that team last year is mind boggling.

What teams are doing is hitting Allen with constant double teams, and/or throwing the ball quickly without dropping back more than 3 steps. The double teams are the reason the other guys on the team have all of the sacks, because they only have one guy to beat.

That’s kind of the idea of a football team. When a player is dominant enough, opponents game plan around him and instead of that player putting up massive numbers, his teammates do. A shutdown corner doesn’t rack up picks, the rest of the secondary does; the same way a really dominant running game helps out the team’s wide receivers. Same thing with sacks: just because Allen isn’t putting up the numbers he did last year doesn’t mean anyone respects him less as a player.
