Seahawks-Packers ref now admits call was “probably” wrong

AP

A cottage industry emerged last week among a small handful of contrarians who pandered to Seahawks fans by suggesting that the events that concluded the Monday night game between Green Bay and Seattle were handled correctly.

That industry can now officially be disbanded.

Replacement referee Wayne Elliott, who initially defended the call of a touchdown by Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, reluctantly admitted during an interview with Cris Collinsworth and James Brown on this week’s Inside the NFL that the call “probably” should have been an interception.

The heart of the controversy continues to be the difference between control and possession.  If one player controls the ball before the other player, there can be no simultaneous catch.

Elliott also said that he received plenty of calls after “the call,” and that one of them came from Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

“He called me at my house last week, because he had heard I was having a rough week with all the calls and everything,” Elliott said.  “He just had heard that I was having a rough week, and wanted [me] to know that he thought what I did, controversial and maybe he didn’t agree with it, that I handled it with class.”

Asked for some war stories, Elliott said that Bears quarterback Jay Cutler called Elliott an “M-F-in’ replacement ref” during a game, but that Cutler later offered him water, explaining the profanity by saying that was the only way to get Elliott’s attention.

Referee Jim Core shared an observation regarding Bucs coach Greg Schiano:  “He’s college.”  Core went on to explain that wasn’t a compliment.

The full interview is worth a listen.  But here’s hoping it’s the last we hear from or about the replacement officials.

Ever.

  1. why is this man being harrassed? would you be on the substitute teacher like this if your kid didn’t get that “A”

  2. He should not get harrassed, because if I remember correctly, the call was upheld on further review. Mistakes are made, that is why replay was invented. I have an issue with him defending the call long after the game was over, but he made a mistake, and the rest of the process allowed that mistake to persist.

Actually, yes, I believe most parents would. Have you ever been around a helicopter mother whose child got a bad grade?

  4. Regarding the Schiano comment; let’s remember that Greg Schiano was brought in for a reason and that reason is to instill discipline and order to a once proud franchise that became a total joke losing ten straight games and quitting on the prior coach, who was in over his head to begin with. So, yeah, maybe some of Schiano’s tactics (toes on the line) and intensity (rushing the line on a kneel down) are “college”, and maybe the young Bucs are 1-3 (losing three games by a combined 15 points), but there is a change for the culture and it is for the better. The roster is getting turned over and the new draft class looks promising. The offense needs to be consistent and take advantage of Freeman’s skillset, which is not to be a catalyst for a run heavy offense. The man needs to throw more, just like he does at the end of games, instead of this vanilla looking offense that is run in the first three and a half quarters. Because that looks “college” and not in a good way.

  5. Elliot made some frightening admissions in that piece.

Most notably: “For me, I learned a rule, by screwing up a rule” and also “that’s the best way for me to learn (a rule) is to screw it up”.

    Oh dear God.

Plus, his cavalier attitude and smirking throughout all of it, is really bizarre.

Essentially saying “Yep, I bleeped up, tough sh–“. Unreal.

  6. Leave the guy alone. In the end it got the labor issue resolved. I know packers fans won’t agree but it did more good than bad for the NFL.

  7. Shhh, don’t tell the Vikings fans that!

The way they tell it, golden Tate was wide open in the end zone, after fighting off three illegal hits from the packers, and made a stunning one handed catch on a perfect ball thrown by a qb who is way better than Rodgers, all while Rodgers was beating up children, blowing off cancer patients, and complaining about Gas prices.

  8. Now compare Mike McCarthy’s approach to the call to that of Pete Carroll. Carroll continues to try to convince the rest of the world that it was a correct call instead of just shutting up and taking the free gift.

It’s like winning the lottery and then bragging about how smart you are in picking the numbers. Pete Carroll shows no class, Golden Tate is a disgrace to the ethical standards of his alma mater Notre Dame and karma has yet to extract its full revenge on the Seahawks.

If the substitute teacher graded my kid’s paper wrong, and her grade went down because of the substitute teacher’s mistake, then yeah, I would be all over that teacher.

  10. This guy is hangin on to his 15 minutes of fame. Or Infamy. As Iron Mike would say… “Stop It” !

  11. Move on please. You would have a long time ago if the teams were reversed.
    Now that’s the tragedy.

  12. ^^^ if it wasn’t obvious, Packers fan here and this is enough already. Yeah, it sucked, it’s an L and nothing can change it. Hopefully it’s a lesson learned in the future. That said, the Packers can say they were better than 31 other teams and the referee’s when they win the Super Bowl this season. 🙂

    That’s right, I said it!!!

  13. i find it laughable that a franchise that berates all bout championships & history leaves it up to the final play of a game with replacement officials to bitch bout a loss. be a better team by winning my more than 1 score & u would not have this problem EVER….replacement officials or otherwise!!

  14. I’m really glad that Mike McCarthy has shown such class in this situation. Hopefully this game deciding call will not keep the Packers out of the playoffs.

  15. I get the feeling this man was harassed to the point where he finally gave in and admitted to being ‘wrong” to get the media off his back.

  16. The horror… there is a horse laying on the ground over there. I think it’s dead. At least I thought it was dead 2 weeks ago…. that guy in the Green shirt won’t stop beating it.

    It is very sad.

  17. And this Packer fan (for 50 years) would like to add . . . if you guys (Pack) had been up by 3 TDs we wouldn’t be having this conversation. As any athlete will tell you (played FB in college), the refs don’t lose the game for you, YOU lose the game yourself.

    Go Pack!

  18. Lost amongst all this puny Viking fan hatred and packer fan awesomeness is the bit about Cutler being Cutler, one of the most deplorable people in the league. What a little girl.

  19. Please like the real refs weren’t exactly great. Wilson got away with repeatedly pulling on Crabtree and Manningham or throwing armbars because he repeatedly got beat from the line every play. There has been bogus calls again in every game. Just nothing as catastrophic……. YET

  20. It might be helpful to mention that he wasn’t the one that initially made the ruling (since he was positioned behind the QB on the play, and nowhere near the endzone), and only came to that conclusion after seeing the play for the first time on the Jumbotron. Comments are better when placed in the right context.

  21. “The heart of the controversy continues to be the difference between control and possession. If one player controls the ball before the other player, there can be no simultaneous catch.”

    ============

and the problem you’re having is that you don’t know what control means. can a player control a ball with 1 hand? clearly they can. so tate had control of the ball first (which you’d know if you’ve watched the slo-mo vids) and possession first (because his feet were on the ground before jennings).

this seems be a mental block that you just can’t seem to get past despite a mountain of evidence to support that the call was correctlyl made.

Actualy no, all the Vikings fans I know think you truly got jobbed. We’re just laughing at how much you’re overreacting considering all the flack we’ve got from our Pack fan friends in the area for complaining about refs in the past. Divine justice.

The Packer players & the coaches themselves have acknowledged fact that they didn’t play well in that game, particularily the first half. As a matter of fact, Aaron Rodgers said as much on his radio interview Tuesday. That being said, it doesn’t take away from the fact that it was a blown call that lost the game for them.

  24. The issue isn’t the bad call/missed call. They happen all the time.

The issue is he didn’t even know the rule. That is what stands out, and what is wrong with this whole ordeal.

  25. Wow…. that’s incredibly classy on the part of Mike McCarthy.

That guy’s a great coach and seems like a great human being.

You’re right, we wouldn’t, because if they were up by 3 TD’s Seattle likely wouldn’t have thrown a hail mary.

Yeah – used a bad word to get the refs attention. Then offered him water.

    What a soulless MONSTER.

Then again, I’m assuming someone who names themselves after a lame Conan O’Brien poop joke probably just gets ALL their opinions from t.v. instead of reality, so…

Then you don’t know any of the Viking fans on this site. Look above. Not one packer fan whining about the call. More people saying packer fans are whining than anything else. This article was posted because its news, not by the packers, not for the packers.

Divine justice? That happens when (not if) the packers won the Super Bowl.

  29. “But here’s hoping it’s the last we hear from or about the replacement officials. Ever.”

If that’s a promise never to write about it again, count me in.

    Skeptical, but in.

  30. too little too late like our vikes losing to the aint’s(yes the ain’ts) then finding out about bountygate. BUT the dang vikes did it to themselves by 5 turnovers. Farve had some bad decisions there too.

if it were the jaguars or browns nobody would care

    ——————————————–

True, because rarely is a Jaguar or Brown game ever within one score.

  32. I’m so tired of people saying that the Packers should have never let the game get to the point where a Hail Mary would beat them. Has anyone watched the rest of the games this year? A majority of them have come down to final possesions and 2 minute drives. Most of the point spreads are 3-4 tops. The NFL is a very even league and any team can win on any given Sunday. To say the Packers or anyother team should alway win by 2-3 scores is just plain ignorant to how the NFL is today.

  33. Funny, he has defended it multiple times, but is now starting to back pedal… Can we say ‘Media pressure?’

  34. Was “probably wrong” is a lot like saying it rained “a little bit” when Noah made a boat.

I find it laughable that you are even able to speak about championships since your team has NEVER won a Superbowl.

  36. Teams on the rise know when they have turned the corner by picking up fans nationally. I think the way Carrol, and Tate have responded durring this whole thing will make it less likely that football fans from outside the seattle area will start to root for them or buy the jerseys.
They got the W, but the fan backlash will cost them in the long run.

  37. The call was correct when you see the local Seattle affiliate tv angle of kcpq 13 fox, but nobody in the media really wants to say they over reacted and the scab refs were actually right. Sorry packers, keep crying tho

  38. NFL needs to give that game back to the Packers and the loss to San Fran and the Giants loss last year. They really didn’t lose those games. Just ask them or any of their fans

  39. What is Cutler’s obsession with getting water? Is he Bobby Bouche’?

From now on I guess every time Cutler is questioned about something his excuse or solution will be about getting water for himself or others.

  40. This guy has been ridiculed non stop since the play happened. hes been brow beaten by every two bit hack with a column or a microphone, I’m surprised he also hasn’t confessed to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping or being the man on the grassy knoll. And let’s not forget. Full time official in the booth didnt overturn it. Sometimes it’s best to just understand some things are out of our “control”

  41. Well, his admission after a string of death threats and the weight of the sports and non sports media world coming down on him makes an admission the equivalent of making a hostage video. I still don’t believe this site has shown/linked to any of the back of the end zone video or photographic evidence of the play that later emerged, which you’d think would be provided for full disclosure.

Right, because guys like Sam Hurd, Plaxico Burress, Michael Vick, and Big Ben are such classy role models.

Cutler visits sick kids in the hospital and doesn’t bother advertising it to the world, and he refuses to kiss the royal behinds of the media…What a HORRIBLE guy!
