Witten: Our record doesn’t show it, but Garrett is a great coach

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett reacts on the sideline against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second half of their NFL football game in Arlington Reuters

The Cowboys were a .500 team last year in Jason Garrett’s first season as head coach, and they’re 2-2 this year. That isn’t the record of a great coach.

But Cowboys tight end Jason Witten says Garrett is better than his record suggests.

“Jason’s been great,” Witten said, via the Dallas Morning News. “The wins haven’t shown it but Jason is a great coach. I can’t speak more highly about any coach I’ve had. He does a tremendous job of laying it out there and giving you the game plan to go succeed with the adjustments and all that goes in. He’s doing a phenomenal job. We just got to play better.”

But another former Cowboys head coach used to say that you’re as good a coach as your record says you are, and Garrett’s record says he’s a mediocre head coach. And if the Cowboys don’t play better, Jerry Jones may not be willing to give Garrett another year to prove he’s a great coach.

“But another former Cowboys head coach used to say that you’re as good a coach as your record says you are”

So I guess that means that Mike Shanahan the last three years (13-35) has been a very bad coach?

Tony Romo 2012: because I inhereted a horrible interception problem from Drew Bledsoe, so you should thank me for only throwing 5 on Monday.

As long as Jerry Jones is Scout/GM it won’t matter who the coach is. He has too much influence on this team.

If it’s not Garrett, then it has to be Romo……or is really Jerry Jones’ fault?

  13. sudz28 says: Oct 4, 2012 7:52 AM

He’s right about one thing – their record sure doesn’t show it.

  15. cleminem757 says: Oct 4, 2012 7:58 AM

Sounds like a real “players coach”. Good luck with that! HTTR!!!

  16. rockthered1286 says: Oct 4, 2012 7:59 AM

This is becoming a recurring theme for Dallas:
“He may have off field issues but Dez Bryant is a top WR.”
“He may throw a ton of picks but Romo is a top QB”
“We may be losing but Garrett is the best coach.”

You cannot excuse poor behavior and play by simply saying “It doesn’t look like it but…” Fact is fact: Dallas is mediocre. They need a GM. They need a QB. They need a coach (I still feel that JJ only gave Garrett the job and money to keep him from fleeing to Baltimore). But until JJ quits the stubborn mule act, nothing will change for them.

When I think of Jason Garrett all I think about is him icing his own kicker.

  18. krank00 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:11 AM

He is as good a coach as Jones is a GM. Jones is better at Marketing and Garrett is better at politics.

    Just ask Wade.

  19. discosucs2005 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:16 AM

Of course Witten thinks he’s a great coach, Garret is player’s coach; all the Cowboy coaches under Jones have to be.

That’s the problem with the owner being the GM: it gives the players more power than the coaches because if the team fails, who is the GM more likely to blame: himself for making a crappy roster? Or the coach for not getting the most out of the perfect roster he created?

Jerry Jones is actually a decent GM in my opinion. The Cowboys have a fair amount of talent on their roster (Ware, Austin, Claiborne is looking good, Witten, ect.) but as long as the owner is the GM it’s going to be tough to find a coach that is free to coach the way he wants to coach.

  20. kokoskmr says: Oct 4, 2012 8:17 AM

The Ravens dosged a bullet when they offered Jason garret the HC job and he declined (preferring to use th eoffer to squeeze more $$ out of Jerry Jones).

I will take John Harbaugh over Jason Garret as NFL head coach ANY DAY. I suspect many Cowboys fans would agree with me.

  21. SparkyGump says: Oct 4, 2012 8:20 AM

The Cowboys are going to remain a .500 team as long as Jerry Jones runs the show.

This might be some of the worst stuff I’ve ever read. If you think after 4 games you can put this kid in the hof, your as moronic as the men that dress up like female pigs in your stadium. Who have the deadskins played. Nobody of consequence.

  24. cowboys8819 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:32 AM

It’s all a process in the NFL for new coaches and Garrett is a new coach even though he coaches the Cowboys doesn’t mean he’s been a HC for years! Just be patient and we will be fine!

  25. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Oct 4, 2012 8:38 AM

well, ol’ JG’s got a problem. when most coaches have a team that is mediocre, they can go to the owner and blame it on the talent level assembled by the gm. but JG’s owner knows the gm has assembled the most talented team in the league and can’t figure out why he hasn’t been able to find a coach that can coach all that talent.

it turns out all the noise coming from big d is just a feedback loop that goes all the way back to the day jerry fired jimmy johnson (the only gm to build a winner in dallas since the landry era).

seems like jerry’s going to have to keep looking for one of those 500 coaches. jimmy’s probably toasting him with a heineken on the rocks down in islamorada.

  26. prince5000 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:40 AM

  27. conormacleod says: Oct 4, 2012 8:44 AM

Does anybody in that franchise ever look themselves in the mirror and say “maybe I’m the problem”?

  28. zidanevalor says: Oct 4, 2012 8:47 AM

Maybe I’m biased, but .500 doesn’t seem mediocre to me. Average yes, mediocre no.

  29. tmac4454 says: Oct 4, 2012 8:48 AM

I must say this, Dallas fans are pure suckers. Opie Garrett has no idea of what coaching is all about. He is probably as good as an OC. Jenny Jones is the HC on up. Opie is nothing but a yes man. A good HC goes to the podium and talk to the media not Jenny Jones. I have never seen other team owners talk to the media as much as Jenny does.
So all of you Cowgirl lovers, go ahead and click on thumbs down. You know I am telling the truth about a yes man/patsie=Opie Garrett.

    @skins1982

Can you please pass whatever it is you’re smoking because I’m pretty sure RG3 has played in 4 games and has a top 5 worst defense in the NFL. Explain to me how the division has flipped when there is a team with a 2 time Super Bowl MVP and winning QB playing in it?

  31. orakpocalypse says: Oct 4, 2012 9:08 AM

  32. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Oct 4, 2012 9:16 AM

I don’t doubt that Garrett is a great coach. Jerruh Jones, his Texas-sized ego and his son along with their iffy draft picks are the problem in Big D.

@timebandit24 and irongershwin….. Please stop feeding that troll. It only encourages his idiocy.

On to the Cowboys….. JG needs to get out of coaching in the pros and hone his skills at the lower levels. He simply is not ready for the big stage….. Now as for Jerrah…. He needs to hire football people to run his football team. Nuff said!

  35. greymares says: Oct 4, 2012 9:47 AM

the real problem with the Cowboys is the big men on both sides of the ball look like they’re auditioning for dancing with the stars.

garret is garbage… he needs to run the ball more and stol doing screens on 3rd and 20.. it has never worked and never will… j.j needs to hire a gm and just sit back and make money.. i hate both .500 since jerrah took ownership…

  39. selgaeinla says: Oct 4, 2012 10:11 AM

All is well. No need to make any player, coaching or front office changes. Things will work out if you just keep doing the same thing.

I can’t believe the NFL is so irresponsible! How can they allow a dude with this much obvious brain trauma to play in any games? Player Safety First, Rodger.

  43. pickney1 says: Oct 4, 2012 10:37 AM

Jason Garrett is a snake in the grass head coach.. that will stay with the Cowboys because he is Mr. Jerry Jones puppet

  44. olcap says: Oct 4, 2012 11:07 AM

  45. daknight93 says: Oct 4, 2012 11:14 AM

Jason Garrett is not head coaching material…everyone knows Jerry runs everything..technically, Dallas doesn’t have a head coach because jerry will not give any power to a head coach..it’s Jerry way or the highway case closed…Dallas is a dysfuctional organization…Jerry Jones ran off talented coaches because of his ego…Jimmy Johnson, Parcells, could’ve kept Sean Payton, could’ve kept Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator…Jerry will never learn and his teams will continue to suck

  46. Slackmo says: Oct 4, 2012 11:26 AM

Our record says nothing about how great we are.

  47. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Oct 4, 2012 11:37 AM

I believe Garrett is a players coach. He protects them and unfortunately is pretty easy on them when they under perform.

How can Romo be starting after 5 INTs in a game? How can Dez still be out there if he doesn’t know the plays after 3 years? Nice player popular coaches don’t win but the players are happy and that’s the main thing.

  48. kbuck89 says: Oct 4, 2012 11:38 AM

The fact that people say Romo throws a lot of interceptions is a joke in itself. He has a career 2:1 td/int ratio. Last season he was also 1 of 2 quarterbacks to throw for 30+ tds, 10 or less ints, 100+ quarterback rating, 4,000+ yards, and a 66% completion percentage. Never has thrown more than 20 in a season and that is more than the reigning SB MVP can say. O and the other quarterback? The MVP Aaron Rodgers

  49. trojan33sc says: Oct 4, 2012 11:48 AM

    3. You are fans of a team states away because of what they have done in the past. I pity you really.
