“Back in the day” of network tv only and no internet, we were lucky to get much info about our favorite players and teams. I’ll take the good with the bad, and emphasize the good. I’m just glad fans like you are still out there.

I often wish the NFL was more obscure — kind of like the NHL — so that the fantasy geeks, gamblers and casuals would leave the sport to those of us who actually appreciate the beauty of a TEAM functioning as a TEAM.

I blame fantasy football for part of it. FF is the devil. It’s so stats driven that TV has to gear more towards those people to keep their audience interested.

I am with you: there is very little I despise more football talking heads wise than giving a QB a W-L record. It’s preposterous. ONLY teams and HCs have W-L records. Period.

If the Jets landed Schaub in ’06, guys like Favre, Sanchez, Tebow, and Rex would have been playing and coaching elsewhere. Mangini wouldn’t be sitting behind a desk at ESPN. The Jets woulda used the Sanchez pick on Michael Crabtree.

A lot would have been different. To suggest the Jets would have still jumped head first into the Favre pool is just silly.

There’s a long laundry list of teams that’s won Super Bowls without so-called “elite” quarterbacks.
The ’05 and ’08 Steelers with Roethlisberger are still near the top of my personal list. One TD pass in two Super Bowl wins is astounding.
ESPN has gone to great lengths over time to create the illusion that QBs somehow have the equal importance of MLB’s power-pitchers, even giving them won/loss records. That’s absurd.

And Mark Sanchez: Could Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning excel in that Jets Mess? I think not.
Football is the ultimate team sport. Which explains the reason teams that don’t have an ESPN-approved superstar QB (Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, Jim Plunkett, Brad Johnson, Joe Thiesman) are more likely to win more championships than, say, Dan Marino or Fran Tarkenton.
ESPN-hyped QBs, however, do keep the casual fans interested, don’t they?

The QB centric-ness does get irritating doesn’t it? The best part is when they talk about having to have an elite QB to win a SB but they forget that a fair amount of the “elite” guys weren’t considered elite even by them (and rightfully so as none of them WERE elite then even if you think they all are now)when they won their first SBs: TB in 01? Not elite. Eli in 07? Not elite. BR in 05? Not elite.

Mike, for the layman reader this probably makes sense. To a jets fan it is rediculous to draw a line between pennington and schaub in 2008. Chad was a year on year off player his whole career, and schaub was still young enough to entice, injured or not.

Basically, do us all a favor and right about something relevant. Not some hypothetical from 7, 5, or 4 years ago. In NFL terms, that’s all ancient history…

Schaub didn’t always look this good, and there was a time when Pennington didn’t look too bad, so it’s pretty believable that they would have still gone with Favre.

Schaub has a top 5 RB as well as a top 5 WR. Doesnt hurt having a top 5 D either. Schaub has never been a top tier QB and NEVER will be. He can take you to the play-offs and maybe the SB but you will never in your life mention his name and “elite” in the same paragraph. He struggles to stay healthy most of the time.

It wouldn’t have mattered because he would have been joining the Jets… That whole organization is a mess; If you put Sanchez on a team with good coaches, who can put a game plan together that maximizes his strengths, he would be a top 10 qb…. Look at how much Smith improved in SF when the got a good coach.

Rex is funny, and a good D coordinator; he sucks as a head coach…

Schaub had 1 really good statistical year a few years back. He also gets hurt a lot. Has one of the better WRs in the league. An awesome running game and a great defense. And the Jets have….
It’s all about how the organization is run. And that’s the difference between the Jets and the good teams. Not what QB they have.

If they had Schaub, they’d have treated him like they did Sanchez, and then unlike Sanchez, Schaub would have actually succeeded since he’s actually a good QB.

I think he is saying that the Jets cared more about being the lead story on the back page of the New York Post than they do building a football team to win. I would say I have to agree with that sentiment.

Schaub has posted QB ratings of 90+ every year since becoming a started aside from his first (87). Granted he has been a bit fragile, but he is easily one of the most underrated QBs in the NFL and has been for awhile.

And you forgot the most important part in that analysis…..we never would have had to see Brett Favre’s dingaling.

Would the Jets offense be running on mostly check downs? I live in Houston and I’m not a Schaub guy. I think his numbers are misleading. He’s a very solid qb, but he’s got a pretty good supporting cast. Yates looked pretty good last year everything considered, I think it’s probably 70% system 30% Schaub.
