Peyton and the Broncos come up short in New England

Getty Images

Peyton Manning has suffered some disappointing losses in New England before. This time he was wearing a different uniform.

Manning, who in his time as quarterback of the Colts had some big wins but more big losses against the Patriots, faced New England for the first time as the quarterback of the Broncos, and the result was a loss.

The loss wasn’t the fault of Manning, who completed 31 of 44 passes for 345 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. But Manning didn’t get a lot of help from the Broncos’ defense, which simply couldn’t stop New England’s offense, or from Broncos running back Willis McGahee, who dropped a perfect pass from Manning on a fourth-and-1, and later fumbled away the Broncos’ final chance at a come-from-behind victory.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was methodical, completing 23 of 31 passes for 223 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions, but the real story of the day was the inability of the Broncos’ defense to stop the Patriots’ running game. New England running back Stevan Ridley had 28 carries for 151 yards, Brandon Bolden had 14 carries for 54 yards, Danny Woodhead had seven carries for 47 yards (including a stunning 19-yard run on third-and-17) and Shane Vereen only got the ball once, but it was a one-yard touchdown.

Seeing Manning and Brady on the field together is always a pleasure, and both played well again today. Considering that they’re the two oldest starting quarterbacks in the NFL, we’re probably running out of opportunities to see them face off. Maybe they’ll do it again in the playoffs.

  1. As a Patriots fan I love watching Peyton play. One of the best of all time. Definitely the Broncos defense that’s at fault here as well as some critical plays blown by Willis. Peyton also threw some nice deep balls which was good to see. Obviously he doesn’t have the strength he once did but he’s always played smarter.

  2. Why, after a 200 yard game and a huge catch, is DeMaryius Thomas taken out of the game and they let McGahee carry the ball (while down 2 scores and time running out)?

  3. Roastmeforbeingacardsfan: Colts are 2-2 and yes the Broncos defense struggled badly in the first half (they were slightly better in the second half) but lets be honest here if Tebow were playing today this game is worse than the 45-10 beating from last year’s playoffs. The fullback would have probably been 11 for 27 for 79 yards and 3 interceptions, but I’m sure he would have added 20 or so rushing yards.

  4. Three points away from 5-0. After 2007, I don’t think any Pats fans mind losing a few regular season games.

Belichick in his press conference: “Nobody I’d rather have than Tom Brady, but Peyton Manning’s a great player.”

Couldn’t agree more. All due respect, but when people look back on this era, Manning’s the Marino and Brady’s the Montana.

  5. Joetoronto: yeah for once we were able to experience what it’s like to be Raiders fans.

  6. They can still meet next year. Just have to both finish in the same place in their respective divisions.

  7. I love to see that reality is starting to set in for Bronco’s fans that their team isn’t quite as dominant as they thought it was gonna be. Defense is mediocre & far from looking like a Super Bowl contender at this
    pt in the season

Not a Pats fan but I think right now the Pats will use the run game to batter and bruise the Broncos(and of course keep Manning off the field).

The respect that Belichick has for Peyton Manning was so obvious after that 4th & 2 call. Same thing almost happened today!

  9. Peyton’s stats are incredibly overrated when you factor in the 31-7 lead that resulted in the Patriots’ defense playing a soft zone to prevent the big play and quick score. What were his stats when they were playing real defense?

Maybe the broncos D isn’t a top five unit like everyone said to not give Tebow a ounce of credit. Also colts 3-2 broncos 2-3

Colts are 2-2 and lost to JAC. Broncos 2-3 and lost to ATL, HOU, NE. Comparing records this early is misleading. Broncos will get it figured out.

  11. Very disappointed with the way the Pats closed out this game. Give credit to Manning, but I hated the play calling and the decision by Belichick to go for it on 4th down. Still, the Patriots came away with a win. Manning still looks like Manning.

  12. The score would not have been close if the refs didn’t let Denver’s offensive line to grab any Patriot and hold on for dear life. I’ve been watching Peyton since the start and cannot remember one offensive line holding on a pass play. There have been a few on running plays. I guess the NFL, after the debacle of the replacement refs, cna’t afford to have Peyton go down again.

Exactly. Last years Broncos defense got to play Minnesota without Peterson, Bears without Cutler and Forte, Raiders without McFadden, Chiefs without Charles, and Raiders again when they were starting Palmer for the first time in 18 months.

  15. Broncos will get it figured out.
    ==========================

Yes, they will figure out that the Colts were a great team that made Manning look better than what he is.

  16. Jomochefsfan84: the Broncos are 2-3 playing one of the toughest schedules in the league so far, the teams they lost to are a combined 12-2 and all 3 would be considered Super Bowl contenders, and in all 3 games the Broncos were in it in the 4th quarter. Now coming up they get to play “beasts” like the Chefs x 2, the Dolts x 2, the Raiders, the Browns, the Aints, the Bucs, the Panthers, needless to say going 10-6 winning the division and figuring things out to win some games in the playoffs are well within reach.

Now let’s compare that to the Chefs, who many Chefs fans were claiming were a “loaded” team going into the season…yeah enjoy battling it out with Oakland for the top pick in the draft.

$96 million later, the Broncos still can’t beat the Patriots.
    ——————————
And $72 million later the Patriots lose at home to the Arizona Cardinals. And lose again to the Ravens the next week.
No guarantee the Patriots make the playoffs either .

  18. Here is the weekly knock on Peyton’s game. This week it is “well he threw for those yards against a soft D” How about we give the guy credit. Does anyone who watched th game truly believe that Brady played better? Numbers dont lie. You cannot give up a first down on a running play on 3rd and 16. Denver’s D looked awful today. Willis killed them today and another drop by DT on a LONG pass from Manning. He completed 70% of his passes threw for 3 TD and once again no INT. He did have the fumble but do you not think he was on Big Bill’s mind all game. They had a chance to punt it and pin denver back but they went for it Brady fumbled and Denver scored. A win in SD nect week puts them at 3-3 with the hardest part of their schedule done. Its a 2 team race in the AFC right now bc OAK and KC are a couple of jokes.

  19. @ atwater crushes okoye.
For once we feel what the raiders feel.

Lol. For one we beat u the last four years before last week. One was one of the worst beatings in nfl history.
And 2. You think peyton is gonna rescue that sad organization. All bronco fans have 18 jersyes and r coming out of the woods all of a sudden. Raider fans know were re building and its gonna take time. We have had al holding us back but now were gonna progress. So have fun thinking ur top contenders when everyone else knows ur still a mid level team. Ok atwatersnumberisnowfumblingmaghee.

  20. 250 rushing! As a Patriot Fan, just can’t tell you how happy this makes me feel! Two weeks in a row is even better.
The Patriot offense played at a tempo that not many teams can keep up with.
Keep playing nickle and dime packages…Tote the rock and control the clock……Always a winning formula!

  21. People keep referring to the 45-10 game from the playoffs last year but whats funny is that you fail to see the obvious…….both are still a tick mark in the loss column. Manning was supposed to be the Savior that saves the Broncos from all their sins. He’s in much the same position that Kyle Orton was in exactly a year ago and so are the Broncos. Touche`…..Tebow haters gonna hate.

  22. Nmrdr795: Its great that you guys set a record beating us down in 2010, it was truly bottom in what was the worst season in Broncos history, since then the Broncos have turned it around, brought in quality football guys, signed and drafted better players and oh yeah got themselves a real QB. Meanwhile the Raiders have been through 2 coaches since then, and look to be at best treading water but more likely sinking, You can blame whoever you want but that organization is still a mess and you hired a Head Coach who wasn’t a very good DC and the Broncos players weren’t exactly disappointed to see him leave. oh yeah and you still haven’t had a winning record since 2002, long live the Gruden Curse!

  23. WolfmanPatriot: “Yes, they will figure out that the Colts were a great team that made Manning look better than what he is.”

Oh yes. Just look at the Colts team when he left vs Matt Cassell

Peyton played great…as usual. However, this a poor game to use Brady’s stats as an illustration of how good Peyton was. The Pats currently have a monster running attack and rushed for 250 yards. The Broncos were eviscerated by that running game today. Question: Do you think that Brady’s passing stats were somewhat less dramatic do to the fact that the Pats ramrodded the ball down the Broncos throats and the Broncos were helpless to do anything about it????

Is that the same Reggie Wayne in Indy that was there when Manning last played?

You don’t believe the Colts didn’t tank last year to get the #1 draft pick? Another highlight of the Irsay Colts legacy.

  27. Peyton Manning is the MASTER of meaningless touchdowns.

You look at the stats and say ‘Manning had a great game, No picks and three TDs’.

But those scores came at a time where the game was hardly in doubt and the Broncos were never truly a threat to win this game.

Denver fans, welcome to my frustration for the last 12 years… and just wait til playoff time.. it’ll get EVEN WORSE.

Manning sucks when it matters.. always has.. always will.

  28. Anyone who still says Tebow brought nothing to the Broncos last year is completely blind. There’s still something to be said in this game for guys with absurd levels of physical and mental toughness.

  29. This article was about Manning’s arm.. and neck. I surmised a couple games ago that he is back to being completely healthy. He was great as always- with no lacking in any of his skills. And I noticed in a side-shot of him on the sidelines that his freakin neck looks HUGE!! It looks ‘roided up’ by the stem-cell therapy! Maybe I could have that done to my johnson?

Broncos will get it figured out. ==========================

Yes, they will figure out that the Colts were a great team that made Manning look better than what he is.

That has to be the stupidest thing I have ever read on here. Remember back in 2010 when Manning was the MVP and to no ones surprise, went to the playoffs again. and then 2011 with the same team minus one little factor, Manning, going 2-14? And to say Manning isn’t a playoff caliber QB is just retarded. the colts never got Manning a capable defense that forced Manning and crew to put up 35+ points a game. Now either watch a game of football instead of highlights or get off these sites and and go watch glee. Manning #1

  31. Brady has a good dinking and dunking offense. I wasn’t surprised when McDumass brought that back to NE and it showed today. Maybe we we’ll see another spygate sequal fingers crossed.

  32. You don’t believe the Colts didn’t tank last year to get the #1 draft pick? Another highlight of the Irsay Colts legacy.
    ==================================

You got that right. Irsay quickly saw that Archibald Manning had been running the team. He realized they had a garbage backup qb, spineless incompetent coaches and staff. Most importantly, what a self serving non team player pouty Peyton really is. This is why he didn’t keep peyton. He knew he had to rid Indy of this cancerous letch that waited till just after cashing a very healthy bonus check before informing Irsay that he needed another surgery.
    Irsay cleaned house, and wisely.
Man it was painful to watch him yell and wave in his offense after a play had gone bad. He treated them like he most likely got away with treating all the other kids on his high school team.

What really bothers me, is when Brady wins, it is a team sport. They make it sound like Wes threw passes to himself and Tom had nothing to do with it. When Pouty Peyton occasionally wins, it is all because of him and the team that blocked for him and caught passes had nothing to do with it. Peyton always had the hall of fame runners and top pick cast, steady coaching.
Brady has had to work with average guys that BB coached up to be their best. Once they got good, kraft wouldn’t pay em and BB has to start all over. Same with coordinators.

If Tom had played for Indy, he would have 10 rings. Tom is doing it the right way under BB.
For Manning to do well under BB, BB would have had to bicho slap both Peyton and his ol man 12 years ago.
