Vikings proving many wrong, improving to 4-1

Tennessee Titans v Minnesota Vikings Getty Images

There were many who thought the Minnesota Vikings would stink this year, including the guy who just typed those words.

This just in: The Vikings definitely do not stink.

They improved to 4-1 with a sound 30-7 thrashing of the Titans.

Defensively, they limited the Titans to 267 yards, and made running back Chris Johnson look like a non-factor with 14 carries for 28 yards. Then again, maybe Johnson’s making Johnson look like a non-factor.

Matt Hasselbeck looks like a guy who left all his functional football in 2011, completing 26-of-43 for 200 yards, with a touchdown after the game was well in hand and a pick.

Offensively, the Vikings were able to withstand Christian Ponder’s first two interceptions of the year, but balanced that with a big day from Percy Harvin (eight catches for 108 yards and a score) and 433 total yards.

Titans running back Javon Ringer left the game on a cart late with a left leg injury, and from the looks of it, it’s hard to expect good news.

The same can be said of the 1-4 Titans season, at least until quarterback Jake Locker comes back and gives them some reason for hope.

4-1 and tied for 1st in the NFC North – SKOL!

They haven’t beat anyone. And don’t give me the niners game. Niners weren’t ready to play. The far better team lost that game. Lets not forget the last place schedule they have.

    4-1 is 4-1. Don’t care who they’ve beat, they’re winning.

Actually they have the 8th hardest schedule in the NFL. Don’t say the better team lost because they beat the 49ers in every aspect of the game. Even 49er fans who actually watched the game will tell you that.

Go troll some other team, or find something better to do with your life.

I wanna say i was completely wrong about our vikes. Sorry guys. I wanna see simpson catch deep balls. ponder and harvin are cruising. Chris johnson…what the heck happened to him? I just has no drive left. He has nothing like a.p.’s drive. I think they will make the playoffs now. I wanna see them beat the packers(they can do it twice) and humiliate that jerk jay cutler when they play chicago TWICE. Good luck boys, things are falling into place for you guys!

  6. ddogdaddy says: Oct 7, 2012 7:46 PM

Who is the only team to beat them? I will tell you who. The stone cold killer Colts. Good job Vikings. Nice to see somebody else on top of the NFC North.

Otis, you sound like either a 9ers fan or possibly a packer fan. The better team won. Don’t give me that ‘they weren’t ready’ garbage. Suck it up, punk.

There there now, it’s ok. Someday that packer stock will be worth something to just hold on to that for as long as you can.

And oh yea, they beat the 9ers.

That’s one of the worst excuses I’ve ever seen. The Niners “weren’t ready to play”? What the hell were they doing all week before that then, not practicing or game planning at all? This is the cheapest copout I’ve seen since the Packers saying they “beat themselves” after all of their losses.

  13. g68rh says: Oct 7, 2012 7:54 PM

All you can do is beat the teams on your schedule and the Vikings first half schedule was definitely going to be easier than their second half. As a Viking fan I am obviously happy and shocked that they are sitting at 4-1 and hope they can get some more wins and pad the “W” column before the 2nd half.

its the vikings fault the niners were not ready to play? NOT!! plus the refs tried to gift wrap a victory for them with an extra time out for HC Harbaugh then gave the niners the ball on a fumble that was never ruled one on the field!! Vikngs D stuck em on the very next 3 and out! OWNED!!

Better team???? ok, for the sake of argument let’s say the vikings record is a fluke, you’re saying the better team got creamed by a weak team???? if that’s true( which it’s not) how much better can the titans be?

    your comment makes zero sense!

  17. ponies92 says: Oct 7, 2012 7:57 PM

They haven’t beat anyone? They dismantled the 49ers and the Titans, and came up clutch against the Jags and the Lions. Top 5 NFL defense, a clutch quarterback, best running back in the league, and a solid receiving corps with a dynamic player in Harvin. But no we didn’t beat anyone

  18. pfpjschulz says: Oct 7, 2012 7:58 PM

what last place schedule? the lions packers and bears all have jax, Tenn, indy, and sf on their schedules? also what does “the 49ers weren’t ready to play” mean? did the nfl surprise them with a last second game?

  19. rallen69 says: Oct 7, 2012 8:08 PM

I am a Vikings fan and live in Minnesota and I never saw this coming. At best I thought this team would be a 6-10 or 7-9 team but now I have some hope for them. I would still like for them to get Simpson to get more involved and to get gerhart and Ellison the ball more and I also can’t wait to see how Jarius wright fits into the offense once he comes back.

  20. otis52gsh says: Oct 7, 2012 8:12 PM

Harvin should be a legitimate candidate for MVP.

  22. packhawk04 says: Oct 7, 2012 8:18 PM

6-2 was a realistic start for the vikings based on the schedule. Also based on the schedule, a 7-9 or 8-8 is also very realistic.

  23. vikingsgohard says: Oct 7, 2012 8:20 PM

@ddogdaddy good point Indy is playing very good … We beat too play off teams an a win is better then a lose no matter who it was … We Rollin finding ways to beat the teams we should be wining an even the ones were not

  24. FinFan68 says: Oct 7, 2012 8:20 PM

They are much better than I thought they would be. Remember when most people (even Vikings fans) were laughing at Ziggy’s comments about winning the division? Who’s laughing now? Long way to go but they are a decent team and Ponder is developing well. We’ll see how it goes when they let/need the kid to throw more middle to deep passes. I think he will be OK. Minny finally groomed their own QB from the draft.

  25. vikingsgohard says: Oct 7, 2012 8:21 PM

OtisGSH is kidding right? I’m assuming he or she is Bears fan.. So using the 49er game doesn’t count, I’m gonna say the Bears game against the Cowboys doesn’t count because Tony Romo had 5 picks! So take that win from the Bears, and take today’s win against Jacksonville away because they stink… And the win against the Rams doesn’t count either because Bradford telegraphed his passes… So the Bears are 1-1….How’s that for some sound logic??? SKOL Vikes!

  27. atfinch1984 says: Oct 7, 2012 8:22 PM

Lol this guy, they’ve played 3 teams from the AFC South, you know… the division every team in the NFC North plays. A divisional game against the Lions and a game against supposedly the best team in the NFC in the 49ers.

So tell us, what does their last place schedule have anything to do with their opponents so far? The correct answer is nothing. They haven’t even gotten into that part of the schedule yet, and they’re 4-1. Ouch.

  31. taintedsaints2009 says: Oct 7, 2012 8:43 PM

Horrible tackle by Robinson on javon ringer. That caused ringer to wrap up his knee like that, and end his season. Arm tackles like that should penalized. This is why proper form tackles in the secondary is such a lost art. People get hurt when tackling is done the wrong way. That twisting motion of arm tackling risks knee injuries because legs are planted onthe ground and get tangled. Form tackles protect both guys involved. Wrap up,Drive through, and put him on his shoulder pads. Safe. Effective.

Also, horrible call by refs to eject Harrison smith. I’ve seen far worse go un flagged. But ejection? That was awful.

  32. pappavike says: Oct 7, 2012 8:49 PM

Ponder a joke? What are you smoke’n!! But hey Titans are cream puffs! Right! Nice job Vikes. Oh! on a more serious note Hope the Titans Player that got carted off, Will be alright. And Harrison Smith should have been flaged and ejected from the game, You have to be smart! And respect the officals. He may not have thrown a punch but contact with an offical is not ok!! Good call ref’s

After 3-13 i would have took an 8-8 finish this season, and still would. Ponder hasnt been brilliant, but ok. Although there are definate signs of progress that any real football fan has to be happy with. If Ponder ever looks brilliant, look out because the defense is starting to look that way. the future appears to be bright although i think they are still in for a few lumps this year.

they have alot more weapons than people are giving them credit for I can at least count 4 maybe 5 threats we have
anyways go vikings may this be the year we show the whole nfl

As a 9ers fan, this is just stoooopid talk. The Vikings beat the crap out of the 9ers and exploited their weaknesses. The 9ers may have come in a little flat but who’s fault is that? The Vikes could have just stunk it up and not taken advantage of the 9ers less than stellar play. They took advantage of the game’s circumstances and won. The 9ers did not beat themselves. They didn’t execute and it was mainly due to what the Vikings were doing to them. Each week it’s a personnel matchup battle. Every team has its weakness.

Don’t look now but MINN is way better than anybody thought they’d be . Come to think of it, so is STL.

I’m inclined to believe however that the 9ers would win a best of 3 scenario vs. MINN. No disrespect to the MINN fans. Congrats to the Viking fans on having a season that is turning out much better than expected. Know exactly how you feel.

he’s just saying that in the hopes that the NFL will change their mind and overturn the Seahawks game, and that the Packers weren’t ready to play against the 49ers, Colts, and Seahawks. so we can’t count the 3 losses the packers have. But then again, the saints and bears weren’t ready to play against the packers, so we probably shouldn’t count the two wins either.

  45. zygizag says: Oct 7, 2012 10:49 PM

  46. 7ransponder says: Oct 8, 2012 12:32 AM

Bring on the excuses haters, I’m ready for you.

“Cupcake schedule” – You mean the same quality of opponents schedule the Packers have had too, only to be 2-3?

“Unimpressive offense” – I recall not many being too impressed by the 2010 Packer offense, led by an “inexperienced” new QB, and what did that team do?

“The team is just getting lucky” – Ok, now you’re just shooting blanks guys, this just scream jealousy.

“Don’t worry, they will fall and be finish right where everyone expects them to” – Right, just like you say that the the Packers will keep winning week after week and shoot to the top once again.

“Ponder is a terrible QB” – Maybe he hasn’t broken out yet, but he’s winning more games than your MVP QB is, so that’s got to count for something.

    Enjoy being under .500

    —————————————–

Okay, let’s review a few facts here, for you and all the rest of your Packer troll/Viking hater brethren.

The Vikings are 7th in the league in defense. (Packers are 14th)
Amongst their opponents are 3 of the top 10 offenses.

They have scored at least 20 points in each game. (the Packers have not)
They have allowed no more than 23 points in any game. (the Packers have allowed more than that 3 times)

Ponder and Rodgers have comp% and yds/att that are within hundreths of a percent, but Rodgers is being picked off 60% more often and getting sacked twice as often.

Against teams that both have played, the Vikings are 1-1 (50-30 combined score) and the Packers are 0-2 (47-60).

The average 2011 record of teams that the Vikings have faced is only 4 games worse than the average of the teams the Packers have played.

As painful as it may be, there is just no getting around it. The Vikings have played better than the Packers so far this year. Deal with it.

  50. brewdogg says: Oct 8, 2012 1:31 AM

    @taintedsaints

He was trying to keep him from going out of bounds and stopping the clock. A form tackle would have driven him out of bounds. I don’t like it any more than you do (and, as a coach, I do try to teach my kids proper form tackling), but he was trying to do his job, and shouldn’t be villified for it.

Allow me to retort, Matt Kalil, Harrison Smith, Josh Robinson, Brett Ellison aka Kleinsasser 2.0, Blair Walsh. As all are major contributors to the Vikings being 4-1 thus far in this young season. Give it up to the Vikings front office making them younger and more hungry for years to come. Kudos to Rick!! Skol Vikings!!!!

Don’t forget the previous years. 2011 was Ponder, Rudolph, Raymond, and Fusco, all starters, and Ballard in the DL rotation. 2010 yielded Cook, Gerhart, Griffin, and Webb, and 2009 was Harvin, Loadholdt, Brinkley and Sanford, who at least is a good special teams guy. I’ll take 4-5 contributors from each class any day.

I don’t think there are any easy teams or schedules, But you can be fortunate as to when you play certain teams!!

Waiting 30 years for season tickets.

Yep… sounds like a lot of bandwagoning in GB. I just checked and there are still “great seats available” for the Packers Vikings game at the dome. Only in MN does the biggest rival still have available tickets. Worst fans ever….
