Troy Polamalu will not play Thursday

AP

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has already been ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Titans after re-aggravating his right calf injury during Sunday’s win over the Eagles.

Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed at his press conference today that Polamalu will not be ready to get back on the field three days from now.

He will probably be deemed out this week because of the week itself being a quick turnaround and the nature of the injury,” Tomlin said of Polamalu. “We will evaluate him when we get back from Tennessee. We don’t think he will participate.”

The play on which Polamalu re-injured his calf looked totally routine — he was just running toward the sideline in coverage when all of a sudden he started hopping on his left foot, unable to put any weight on his right calf. It appears that the calf injury was more serious than he or the Steelers realized: They thought he was good to go for the game, but Polamalu only made it through 19 snaps on defense before his calf gave out on him.

Tomlin added that linebacker LaMarr Woodley, who suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday, probably won’t play on Thursday either. He said that both linebacker James Harrison and running back Rashard Mendenhall, who were making their returns from knee injuries on Sunday, came out of the game unscathed and will be good to go against the Titans.

  1. Nation, put a fork in Troy, no way this will ever fully heal or never re-occur. All good things must end.

  2. With the Hair not playing the Steelers might have a better defense – all The Hair does is to run around the field and to be the last player to arrive at the play – he is so overrated – people mistake his wide field coverage with actual performance – and there is none. What a joke he is!

  3. Teams like the steelers typically don’t rebuild, they reload. If the D can stay healthy enough this year they can still get to the playoffs behind the strength of the offense. They’ve put some good pieces in place to be ready to step in and replace the likes of Hampton, Keisel, Harrison, etc. if and when there time is up. Troy is a whole other ballgame though. I think he’s done as a guy you can count on playing 16 games a season. His value has been down the last couple of years though. He just hasn’t had the impact on games that he used to have.

  4. Steeler D is OLD and STINKS. Polamalu should retire like Hines Ward. Harrison and Hampton and Woodley are pure garbage.

If Vick doesn’t fumble at the goal line the Eagles win that game yesterday easy.

  5. Laserw,

Look up the stats of the defense with and without pola…

I do NOT know them off the top of my head, but games he plays in the defense is better in:

    Points allowed,
    Yards allowed (rushing AND passing)
    Takeaways,
And subsequently the team has a much better win % with than without.

And thats just tangible, measurable stats. You seen him make those “dive over the line at the snap and tackle the qb for a loss on a short qb sneak” plays? Nobody else on our team, nor the league, makes that kinda play.

  6. its the titans… safeties are useless against them… the play never crosses line of scrimmage…

  7. Polamalu is going to miss another game due to an injury? Who is mentoring him, Bob Sanders?

Too bad the classless Troy Polamalu didn’t suffer a career ending injury yesterday.

Now that is a classless person making a classless statement.

And if Cassel didn’t keep turning the ball over the Chiefs would have won too. You Ravens fans never make any sense…..

  10. Troy is a hell of a player when he’s healthy. The problem is that he’s the Steelers version of Bob Sanders. Sadly I believe it’s the beginning of the end for Troy.

  11. With their first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Steelers select, Bacarri Rambo, safety, Georgia.

    Book it.

  12. Like Ed Reed, Troy is always dealing with injuries. These guys have been putting it all on the line for years, but eventually it catches up with them. Hopefully, these two first ballot HOFers can play 2-3 more seasons.

When was the last time Reed had a significant injury? Like 2 or 3 years ago I think. I don’t get why people assume Reed is injury prone.

  14. It seems a little odd that so many haters are commenting on how bad Troy is. Usually no one complains about an insignificant player so your comments are even more absurd. Just playground taunts from those with little substance. I am sure any team could use a healthy Troy . Get well soon Troy we still love ya!

Probably because he’s a huge drama queen who always pretends to be injured.

I think you must be confused because I was talking about Ed Reed, you seem to be talking about Ben Roethlisberger.
