Belichick: Welker’s got a good sense of humor

If Patriots coach Bill Belichick was upset by wide receiver Wes Welker’s comment that it was nice to stick it in the coach’s face after catching 13 balls in the win over the Broncos, he’s not sharing it with the public.

Belichick directed questions about Welker’s comment to the wide receiver during a media session on Monday and the wide receiver said his line, delivered with a wink and a grin on Sunday night, was just a joke. Belichick got asked about it again during an appearance on WEEI Radio on Monday. He gave a little bit more of an answer this time, although it ended with a promise that we’ll never know any response he might have delivered to Welker.

“Well, you know, I think Wes played really well yesterday and happy things turned out the way they did. Any conversations I have with Wes are between me and Wes,” Belichick said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com.

Belichick was then asked if he thought Welker had any future as a comedian. Belichick might not be recommending him to the owners of the Chuckle Factory, but he thinks Welker’s okay in the humor department.

“He has a good sense of humor,” Belichick said.

That should be the last time we spend on this topic, unless there’s some kind of reprisal from Belichick in terms of playing time in the coming weeks. Belichick did sit Welker at the start of a playoff loss to the Jets a couple of years ago because Welker did a few minutes of foot jokes directed at Jets coach Rex Ryan, but that came after the Patriots coach asked his team to avoid giving the Jets any bulletin board material.

We’re not sure if there’s been a similar edict in New England this year, but returns to health for Aaron Hernandez and Julian Edelman could wind up eating into Welker’s playing time again without any machinations coming from under the hood.
