Wes had some outstanding statistical seasons when he was one of the few reliable targets on the team. The reality is (as Rejon Rondo put it) talent eventually cathes up with you, and right now the Pats are loaded with talent when healthy. So yes, Welker will have fewer opportunities as this very versitile offense returns to full strength. Another factor is age. Wes isn’t getting any younger so it makes sense to ease his load and also give some younger guys (with comparable talent) some serious playing time. I agree with Bill that Edelman has a huge upside. He will likely be Welker’s siccessor. As a former QB he can also heave the ball with some accuracy, so it may not be too many seasons before we see some occasional Wildat or creative offense (not thet they need it). Personally, I think some of the media read too much into the Belichick personna. Bill must be laughing his ass off after some of these media session. That’s just my 2 cents. GO PATS!

Those of you saying BB has no sense of humor have apparently only ever watched the 5 seconds clips they show on SportsCenter from his postgame conferences. At any other time – his radio show after a good win, his mid-week press conferences, any NFL Films appearance… or read interviews with ANY ex-Patriot (whether they left on good terms or not) would show that he does have a sense of humor. He puts on a dour, grumpy character for those pressers, but that hardly means that he NEVER has a laugh.

Here’s something humorous. There are some Patriots fans who think Edelman is “similar” to Welker. They are both quick, short, and white. But that’s where similarities end. Welker is one of the best slot receivers in the game.

Bill just won’t play the games people want him to play….besides, I really don’t think he cares what anyone thinks of him.
Being a HC\GM isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a job..One that he does better than anyone else.

I think BB took Tagliabues NFL (no fun league) a bit to seriously. The reality is, Welker has faced questions since week one about his diminished role. Whether Bill is ”punishing” him for The contract situation time and time again. Wes could have pulled a TO or Dwight Howard move, and caused unneeded animosity and burden on The team with The repeated badgering, but he chose to go The humor route. I see no problem with it. As for Welkers situation, he doesnt need BB to like him or want him around, cause i can think of 20 teams off The top of my head that would be more than happy to see him in their uni. And when it comes right down to it…. I think The last couple weeks have.shown us, that when its 3rd and whatever, The man that matters, no. 12, not only trusts him, but is more than happy to look his way.

I think the Patriots are trying to limit Welkers playing time in a ploy to make him less valuable as a free agent. I think the team knows how important Wes is and they want to keep him for years to come. But if Welker has another huge season this year, his value as a free agent will be too much for the Patriots to match. So what is the best way to lower his value? Play him sparingly in the opening weeks, but begin to use him more and more as the season wears on. The end result is a less than his usual stellar stats for the year. Combine that with his age and the Patriots may have driven his value down to a price they can afford.

So you have never talked to the media about a conversation with any player before? Is Wes the only guy that he has only private conversations with Wes and not with anybody else?

Or is the truth of the matter, that he did find some issue with the statement and he merely needs to pretend that there is a special protocol here because he’s embarrassed to explain the real reason why he can’t talk about it. Which is that he is embarrassed in some way?

Don’t worry Bill, it’s a rhetorical question that is just between me and myself, and Internet message board readers that I explain that to.

Welker is a funny guy, but the shame is that he thinks he needs to be funny on the podium. It serves no purpose other than as a distraction. I am still angry about the feet rant from 2010 against the Jets. It was really funny, but he ended up rallying the Jets and getting benched to start the game. It was just dumb.
