Source: Cushing torn ACL is confirmed

Brian Cushing AP

After Monday night’s game against the Jets, the Texans feared that linebacker Brian Cushing suffered a torn ACL.

An MRI has confirmed those fears.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Cushing’s ACL is indeed torn.  It means that he’ll need season-ending surgery to repair it, and that he’ll miss the rest of the season.

As James Palmer of CSNHouston.com explained during an appearance on today’s PFT Live, Cushing is the most important member of the Texans’ defense.  Palmer said that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips recently raved about Cushing, explaining that Cushing means even more to the unit than defensive end J.J. Watt.

Damn! Hate to see any player go down with that injury.

    Not enough juice.

    ouch!

  4. cooklynn17 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:24 PM

They still have a very good defense but this loss hurts. And is even bigger because Cushing was playing at a very high level.

  5. arrogantnation says: Oct 9, 2012 4:25 PM

Huge loss. Texans have enough talent- they will be alright. Fight on, Brian.

  6. whatnojets says: Oct 9, 2012 4:26 PM

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes

  7. whatnojets says: Oct 9, 2012 4:27 PM

Well, there goes the perfect season!

  8. mrgroovesd says: Oct 9, 2012 4:27 PM

That sucks, get well. You will be missed on that defense.

  9. racerp194 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:29 PM

Ravens fan here, sorry to hear this. He is a great player and the texans defense in general is scary good. As big of a loss as this is I think they are still in great shape.

  10. rc33 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:30 PM

Tough, tough break Houston. And on a bs play by Slauson, too.

  11. t16rich says: Oct 9, 2012 4:30 PM

It always sucks to see a player go down, but some players it hurts even more. We all miss out on watching a great young player this year. Good luck on the road to recovery.

  12. 1uniquename says: Oct 9, 2012 4:31 PM

Losing your play caller on defense is nearly the same as losing your QB on offense, this will drastically change their chances this year. Just look at that safety for the Jets a few years back, Brian Urlacher, these guys called the plays on D and once they went down their teams were never the same. GL in your recovery Cushman.

  13. calv23 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:33 PM

Good thing the Jets don’t have a bounty system. Except for Rex Ryan talking openly about “dotting” key players to knock out of games. And Bart Scott talking about putting “hot sauce” on Reggie Bush, then the Jets actually injuring his knee. Then Ryan denying knowledge of the term, though Scott used it in ’06 and ’09, and even based his own brand of Hot Sauce on those comments.

  14. kurly00 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:34 PM

I will try to tone down the emotion and vitriol in an effort to make sure my blog does not get deleted. This was the “hot sauce” the jets were talking about putting on Bush. It was a coached and contrived maneuver to injure a player on the team you are competing against. They need to come down on the perps here and their coaches hard…very hard. No matter what they do they will not miss an entire season. Until they start coming down on the coaches for coaching this stuff it will keep on happening.

  15. dawgsafety13 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:34 PM

Thank god they still have Demeco Ryans!

  16. prospero63 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:35 PM

All from an illegal clip that was not called by the officials. And yet, nary a word about that in any of the press… odd. Guess the problem really was the replacement officials…

  17. b00rad says: Oct 9, 2012 4:35 PM

Was that a dirty play on the Jets O-lineman that got Cushing injured?

  18. ley6233 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:37 PM

    This sucks!

  19. robertocfg says: Oct 9, 2012 4:39 PM

That was a really dirty block. If you ask me, it seems like Matt Slauson just wanted him out of the game. He should be suspended.

  20. yssupasigninnamnotyep says: Oct 9, 2012 4:39 PM

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

  21. annes22 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:40 PM

That’s too bad for him, he played so well last night until the injury.

  22. icdogg says: Oct 9, 2012 4:40 PM

    ouch

  23. squared80 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:40 PM

Should’ve stayed away from the ‘roids, man. Body’s paying the price now.

  24. 1972wasalongtimeago says: Oct 9, 2012 4:40 PM

I wonder if that cry baby DT from Houston still thinks that Incognito is the dirtiest Guard in the league?

  25. houstontexans99 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:41 PM

Ugh, here we go again. What’s most infuriating is that he wasn’t even near the play. That was the highlight of Slausons career.

  26. whatjusthapped says: Oct 9, 2012 4:42 PM

Put him on IR where they don’t test for Roids and watch how fast he makes it back.

  27. randyschwimmer7 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:43 PM

Terrible news. Not a Texans fan, but I feel terrible for him and the team. He is a hell of a football player.

  28. riverhorsey says: Oct 9, 2012 4:43 PM

No big Cushing fan but that looked like a cheap block.

  29. rogergoodellsays says: Oct 9, 2012 4:45 PM

I’ll be issuing the season long suspension for the offensive player that had a bounty on Cushing.

Oh shoot…that was the Jets, not the Saints.

    Well, nevermind.

  30. jdub01984 says: Oct 9, 2012 4:52 PM

I don’t ever wish injury on anyone, but its hard to feel sorry for a player as dirty as Cushing getting injured.

To all the people making ‘roids comments…have you actually even seen the play that he was injured on?? Newsflash, nobody is going to walk away when a 250-300lb lineman is deliberately diving at your knee. Idiots.

    Sincerely,

    A Fan of Football

  32. yousuxxors says: Oct 9, 2012 5:08 PM

im not a texans fan but dam do i feel bad for them. they cannot get through a season without injuries. best team in the league in my opinion

  33. Mr. Wright 212 says: Oct 9, 2012 5:09 PM

Sad, sad news. On a play that he wasn’t even involved. Obvious intent to injure there.

  34. ohsoblessed1 says: Oct 9, 2012 5:20 PM

Those roid comments are unintelligent. Being chopped blocked at your knees has nothing to do with what the hell you are talking about.

  35. doe22us says: Oct 9, 2012 5:21 PM

What a real coward Slauson is, it takes a real coward to go after someones knees when they are not looking. He could have gone high since Cushing wasnt even looking in his direction. Hines Ward always blindsided people but he went high, going after someones knees is just a coward move.

  36. nyjetsfan08 says: Oct 9, 2012 5:30 PM

I’m not happy to hear that a player went down, even a dirty player like Cushing. For those Texan fans who are badmouthing the Jets, I hope it costs you the SuperBowl this year. But with San Fran, the Giants, and whoever else pops up, I somehow doubt you would win the Super Bowl, anyway.

  37. retaeyssup says: Oct 9, 2012 5:45 PM

    Roids don’t prevent knee injuries?

The comments have less to do with the play and more to remind people that Cushing is a cheating roider.

  39. mungman69 says: Oct 9, 2012 6:04 PM

Lots of injuries in football and Houston is good enough to overcome this.

  40. broncosnative says: Oct 9, 2012 6:13 PM

Im telling you, its the hot sauce! Since that comment was made, revis went down, holmes went down and now cushings, who’s next? I’ll be nervous playing the jets now, you’re not just losing no namers, you’re losing your number one player.
