Coughlin playing no-respect card in advance of 49ers game

AP

There’s nothing a coach likes better than telling his players they’re impossible underdogs.

It’s harder to sell when you’re the defending Super Bowl champions, but Giants coach Tom Coughlin is sell it anyway.

Because the 49ers are on a bit of a roll, and because they’re six-point favorites at home for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game rematch, Coughlin said he could “sense” that people thought the 49ers are the best team in the NFC.

Nobody gives us a chance to win,” Coughlin said, apparently with a straight face, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “We’ll see.”

Coughlin’s been singing a familiar song all summer, reminding his players that other teams were getting picked to win the NFC East while his team was picking out rings.

“I may take the occasion to remind them,” he said of his players.

Yeah, maybe once or twice this week.

Asked why he thought so many were picking against his team, Coughlin had no answers.

“I’m not going there,” he said. “Sorry. I don’t have an answer for that. Why do I think they feel that way? Probably because they think the other team is playing very well.”

The 49ers have won their last two games by a combined score of 79-3, and they have a 651-yard margin in those two games (1,000-349).

Nevertheless, the Giants are the Giants, you know, winners of two of the last four Super Bowls. Maybe somewhere, someone in the world gives them the slightest chance.

  1. Well the Giants have some very impressive victories under their belts this year. I can’t imagine why people might think the 49ers should win this game.

  2. No one is giving you a chance because this is the regular season, where your team is usually lackluster at best. We know once you back into the playoffs, you’re very dangerous, but no one fears you in October. Play the underdog card all you want.

  3. Coach, you are a good one but spare your team and us for that matter from the “poor us” attitude. Nobody believes it. As the article mentions, you have won 2 of the last 4 Super Bowls with an All-Pro QB. These are two really good teams who are tough. Can’t wait for Sunday. Should be fun. Go Niners.

  4. The revenge factor alone has to be worth 2 or 3 points. The other 3 or 4 points are because the 49ers have dominated every game but the Vikings this year and the Giants were down to the Browns 14-0 at one point last week…

  5. Reblogged this on Technical Communicator and commented:
This is stupid. The Giants shouldn’t be selling it. The 49ers coach should as they’ve had some tough to choke down losses and they were supposed to be the best team in Football. That makes Coughlin’s move stupid especially where they are. God help the Giants if they lose. Maybe then they’d be able to show that kind of attitude and play that no-respect game.

  6. Have the Coughlin-era Giants successfully defended a Super Bowl title? Oh wait they only had one opportunity and didn’t do it. They are built like the Steelers – they can win it all when healthy and miss the playoffs altogether when the injury bug hits. Let’s see how they stack up against a SF team that looks pretty damn good right now.

  7. Coughlin sure seems to whine a lot. C’mon coach, this might be your last trip to the Stick. (New stadium going up.) Let’s make it memorable for you with a loss.

  8. Not a Giants fan, but they strike me as a team that struggles with high expectations but DRAMATICALLY overachieves whenever they’re written off (2007 and last year).

In other words, they’re more dangerous when barely above 0.500 than when they’re in the division lead.

I can’t blame Coughlin for noticing that and trying to get his guys to play with a chip on their shoulders, though it’s tough to play like nobody respects you when you’re the defending Super Bowl champions.

  9. I bleed blue, love that Coughlin is trying to fire up the team, but with SF at home and NY having no Hakeem Nicks, no veteran DTs, and a secondary that resembles a hospital ward, you have to make SF the favorites. Anything else would be ridiculous. Wish NY was at full strength, but that’s life in the NFL. Injuries impact nearly every game. Sometimes they work for you, sometimes they work against you.

  10. You have to out muscle the 49ers to win. Easier said than done, not to mention play turnover and relatively error free football. Vikings showed how, now if other teams can follow suit they may have a chance.

  11. Though game. Go G-men!

By the way Niners fans, winning this game would not be “revenge.” Revenge isn’t winning a regular season game against a team that knocked you off on your field on the way to a Super Bowl championship 🙂

  12. Well, I can see where he’s coming from.

If I’m the coach the defending Superbowl Champs and a bunch of people had my team written off at the start of the year finishing 3rd behind a couple of teams who haven’t won a damn thing in decades, I’d probably feel that way too.

  13. I think the 49ers and their fans respect the Giants quite a bit otherwise they wouldn’t be looking forward to this match-up Sunday. This game is far beyond chalk board material, time to play the game, no amount of pep talk will change this.

  14. Giants are winners of 2 of the past FIVE Super Bowls not 4. I don’t get way people keep making that mistake.

They have won 2 in 5 years, not 2 in 4. Just like the Patriots won 3 in 4 years (2001-2004 seasons) and not 3 in 3 years (Feb. 2002-Feb. 2005).

  15. Niner fan here,

Nice way to motivate his crew for a big game this week. The niners, and fans alike still have that bitter taste of defeat from last january. A lot has been said along the lines of if Kyle Williams didn’t fumble, the niners would be in the super bowl. I beg to differ; while the fumbles helped put the giants in the big dance, the niners weren’t really moving the ball too well. It was one hell of a game though and i expect nothing less this time around. I’m proud to have this rivalry renewed when it actually means something.

With all due respect to the Packers, Lions, Jet’s Vikes and Bills – i bellieve the Giants will be our toughest test so far in this season. (Kudos to the Vikings for slapping the taste out of our collective mouths and bringing us back down to earth).

Hope that Nicks will be healthy for you guys and that Jacobs will be in the fold for us. Let’s keep it injury free and hope that by Monday morning, we can talk about another classic game.

    Happy Football everyone!

  16. Maybe the Giants aren’t getting the respect they THINK they should get because they just haven’t looked as dominating as they did at the end of last season/in the post-season, and the 49er’s have. Maybe because the Giants defense isn’t as good as what the expectations were (the rash of injuries to their secondary has really hurt them). If the Giants defense can stop the 49er’s running game and if “Good Eli” shows up, the Giants should win. If the Giants do win, they’ll start getting more respect.

  17. Nevertheless, the Giants are the Giants, you know, winners of two of the last [five] Super Bowls. Maybe somewhere, someone in the world gives them the slightest chance.

  18. The Niners are not playing the Jets or Bills this week.

Comparing Giants to those two Teams is like comparing The SB champs to the bottle of the barrel…

    oh wait, they are..

  19. all i know is that regular season game last year was epic and the NFC title game was nearly as good game with two teams pouring their souls into as you can have.

The Niners have a good team but if you think for one minute the Giants are true 6 point dogs in this game you haven’t been watching football lately.

  20. NYG time is between Nov and Early Feb. That’s when they play their best football. There are other teams that play great football in Sep, Oct and loose steam in nov/dec. But NYG is not one such team.

  21. NFL fan here, Matt Ryan and the Falcons might have something to say about that, “Best in the NFC quote”. Just saying.

  22. I think the Giants are a really good team in the NFC but they are playing a real good team this week and we’ll see what happens?

  23. Since teams usually get an automatic 3 point advantage for being at home if all other things are equal, it seems like Vegas is giving the Giants a better chance than most teams would have against the 9ers at home.

  24. I am a big GIANTS fan, but I will give the Niners their due:
They are a top-notch team right now, no doubt about it.

This will be a very good indicator for the GIANTS to determine just how strong they are, as I seriously believe that the Niners are probably the best all-around team we will play all year.

The GIANTS and Niners hooked up for a very good regular season game last year, and a great NFC Championship.

Harbaugh is a tremendous coach, and he is getting the most out of some very talented players.

    They are the real deal.

  25. The Giants aren’t getting respect because they have a reputation for 1) playing down to their opponent and 2) not playing up to their potential in the regular season.

They deserve respect for winning the Super Bowl, but at the same time, they haven’t shown they can win consistently during the regular season. It hasn’t stopped them from winning it all, but they’re unique in that regard.

Oh sure, the Giants were unbeliveably healthy last year (you can’t see it, but I’m rolling my eyes). Missing starting corners, linebackers, O-Linemen… 9 starters ended the season on IR. The only team in the modern era that had more starters miss games during the season (and still win a SB) were the 2010 Packers.

  27. Really this is a win-win for most football fans.

If the Giants lose it puts a can on the “no respect”, “Eli is Elite”, or whatever Coughlin wants to whine about this week.

If the 49ers lose, we get a break from the latest “greatest, most dominating team ever” and a fanbase that acts like they haven’t had a winning team in the last 50 years.

  28. As a Niner fan Im loving the renewal of the rivalry.People forget that Niners/Giants used to be a big rivalry..Im just glad my Niners are back to relevance again..This is shaping up to be a great set of rivalry games for years to come.

  29. The world’s leading whiner will take his tough team (winners over Bucs, Browns and Panthers) to SF.

Someone buy the poor man some tissue.

  30. So it wouldn’t be going out on a limb to say that the gmen aren’t getting any respect. Judging by the populous here I’d say coughlin is right. Hope to see a good game too bad the winner of this ain’t heading to the SB in two weeks.
    Go Gmen!!

  31. The giants haven’t beat anyone, true. But who have the 49ers beat GB, Det, NYJ and Buf? Look I understand before the year those all looked like good to even great teams. But right now, not one of them is even 500%. SF has beaten bad teams decisively but they still have to prove they can beat a good team.

I understand payback and that’s a big motivation for SF. But the Giants play very well when their being discounted and when it come to this game they are being discounted. Also, the Giants are a very good road team so the normal homefield advantage is not what is assumed.

  32. I’m a huge 49ers fan. I could care less if we win or lose this week. We beat them in the regular season last season but regular season records don’t matter when they bounce you in the playoffs. Lose now, win now, whatever. Beating them in the playoffs is redemption. Beating them in October…..meh.

  33. We can play this game all day. The 49ers beat the Packers, so now we should all bow down? THE COLTS BEAT THE PACKERS.

49er fans still mad about last January.
    It is evident!

While Coughlin is playing the no respect card, Alex and John are playing the “I hurt my pinky” card.

    Get real Frisco.

  34. We’ll see what happens over the weekend. I’m a 49ers fan, but I am not looking past these guys. Everyone knows what they did to us last time… they eliminated us from going to the Superbowl.

That’s where Harbaugh is a genius though. By signing Manninham, and Jacobs, we will be able to disect their offense that much more better and hopefully give us a leg up over them.

But like they say… “Any given Sunday”.

  35. I can’t remember. Who WON last time these teams played???

As a giants fan I LOVE that the 9ers are 6 point favorite. “cry baby” Coughlin will out coach that Sally Harbough once again and the giants fans will laugh AGAIN!!!

    Hahahaha

  36. I was considering flying out to San Fran for the game, but the chance I get stabbed or shot by the classy citizens of San Fran is too high. Looks like the couch will be just fine this week.

  37. To anyone saying that the Giants do not play good football this time of year, that is absolutely ridiculous.
Eli Manning has a career record of 24-5 in October.
Actually, no team over the past 6 years has played better this time of year than the New York Giants.

  38. @pixelito says:

Let the 49ers get all the respect, and the NY Giants get all the rings.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Niners 5 – Giants 4. You might be able to use that line on your rival Eagles fans, but not against us.

  39. Cry a river coughlin!! You got lucky last year in NFC champ game.. Real lucky!! Regular season you guys are probably gonna win your division but your not going to win this Sunday!! Alex smith will smash and be consistent and we will run all over your devensive line.. We want revenge and we will get it.. And I’m not talking just Sunday.. I mean this whole year!!! Lets get it NINERS! Undefeated or not we are the best team in the NFL and we will prove it all the way till the end of the year!! GO NINERS LET’S GET IT!!

    ———————————————-

World leading whiner??? I follow the Gmen very closely and I dont recall him whining EVER. Winning…yes. Whining…No.

And yes the giants dud beat TB Carolina and browns. Also a FG away from Philly. What’s yur point?

    SF lost to Minnesota.

Tell young Williams to have eyes on the back of his head cuz were coming for him….again

  41. Giants wont even get past 10 pts.

everyone knows who should have won the NFC championship game. even the giants. look for a lot of hard hits from the niners. on both offense and defense.

i cant wait to see the worst team to ever win a superbowl get their teeth kicked in on sunday.

    Welcome to Alcatraz chumps.

  42. This guy always needs some card to play, instead of just being a coach. Wonder if he’ll complain about sideline cameras again?

Like? Oh you mean that one….nevermind. What about….nope, not that either.

  43. Let be clear on something 49ers fans this is not a revenge game. Everyone and their grandma is talking about revenge for the NFC championship . No your absolutely wrong when we beat the niners in that game it made the giants the NFC champs and eventually the Super Bowl champs . This game regardless of who wins doesn’t earn either o those titles so yeah If the niners win they can brag the can boast but at the end of the game the giants will go to the locker room and put thier rings on !!! G-MEN

WOW!!! You’re not only raging mad but you also predict! Your comment says it all. Wonder what will happen when the 9ers lose. Wait, I know, you’ll get even madder.

I also love the “should’ve won” comment. Let me guess, you predicted the same thing last time the two teams met huh? Really separates you from all the other SORE LOSERS out there. CLASSIC!!!

Sorry, but I believe the Giants are familiar with Alcatraz since their plane passed it by as they left SF after beating the 9ers last post season to eventually win the SB. Remember? It’s ok if you don’t…

  45. Lots of tough talk from a lot of people that will have absolutely NOTHING to do with the outcome on Sunday.

  46. Why are we comparing who beat who Giants fans? Yeah we lost to Minnesota in their house. They also have only one less win than Dallas and Philadelphia COMBINED… then your 3 wins are over teams that collectively only have 2 wins. Yet you will point to Jets/Buffalo being weak teams. Give us a break already. It will be a good game but stop trying to play the whole they only look good because they played weak teams crap because you have played even weaker teams and didn’t exactly look dominating in the process.

  47. For the people talking about Coughlin’s using the no respect card. There’s nothing wrong with that. It is true that many teams use it, and all have used it each season in some way.

However with the Giants even last year people called them a lucky team, fluke, etc. This year it’s the same, worse Super Bowl winner in history is also used. The funny things is, even people in the area say this.

Add the fact that the 49ers have a great running game as usual, more playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, and an attacking defense to the Giants soft defensive play calling from Perry Fewell, injury riddled team at certain positions, and several under achievers and there you have it.

Well the Giants have some very impressive victories under their belts this year. I can’t imagine why people might think the 49ers should win this game.

Yes, because the Jets and Bills are so much more impressive than the Bucs, Panthers, and Browns.

The Niners finally have a good team after 15 years, and the bandwagon is miraculously full of clowns again.

  49. “low snap…the kick is…….GOOD!…and the GIANTS are going to the Super Bowl..”

    KISS OUR RING FRISCO!

    See you Sunday chumps.

Well the Giants have some very impressive victories under their belts this year. I can’t imagine why people might think the 49ers should win this game.

——————————————–the Giants 3 wins are against teams with a combined 2-12 record. impressive ?

  51. These two teams have respect for each other because they’re both legit.

The 49ers have been bad for almost a decade, but Jim Harbaugh has turned this ship around. Even if you don’t like his personality, a reasonable fan of the NFL has to give him credit for results. And this team is as dangerous right now as it’s ever been – the 49ers’ offense is poised for a breakthrough and just became the first in NFL history to pile up 300 yards passing AND 300 yards rushing in the same game.

The Giants have won 2 Superbowls in the last 5 years, and Eli owns Brady as badly as Brady used to own Peyton. They underachieve at times, but a reasonable fan outside of the NFC East has to admit that the Giants have been the best team in that division, and come playoffs one of the best teams in the NFL, for at least that long.

Both games last year were close, and this one should be close too. Hopefully the remaining fans of both teams who don’t yet have respect for the other will gain it, after a third installment of the contemporary renewal of one of professional sports’ most memorable and enjoyable rivalries.

  52. Players on the Giants openly admitted that they tried to take out Kyle Williams in the NFC Championship game last year. What did the NFL do? Nothing. Giants get plenty of respect from the NFL.

  53. I’m a Giants fan, the Giants could win this game and turn around and lose to the Skins. Now if we beat the 9ers and beat the Skins, Boys, Steelers, then I could see Repeat.
