Matt Cassel hasn’t been cleared yet

It’s looking more likely that Brady Quinn will start at quarterback for the Chiefs this weekend.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that Matt Cassel has not yet been cleared to return to action after suffering a concussion in last Sunday’s 9-6 loss to the Ravens. Until Cassel has been cleared by an independent neurologist, he will not be permitted to take part in any Chiefs practices or games.

Obviously Cassel won’t be practicing on Wednesday without that clearance, which leaves Quinn to take the starter reps as the team gets to work in advance of this weekend’s game against the Buccaneers.

Coach Romeo Crennel hasn’t formally ruled Cassel out of the game, although we imagine that will come at some point in the next couple of days. Since we’re talking about Cassel and Quinn, it’s not like the Chiefs have much to gain from keeping the Bucs guessing about which quarterback is going to start the game. And, since we’re talking about Cassel, the Chiefs don’t really have much reason not to see what Quinn can do with the offense.
