Titans upset the Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger AP

The Steelers and Titans both attempted game-winning field goals in the final minute on Thursday night. Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham came up a yard short. Titans kicker Rob Bironas was perfect.

Bironas’s kick as time expired gave the Titans a 26-23 win over the Steelers, in a good Thursday night game that may help the Titans turn around their season, and may prove to be costly for the Steelers.

It will be costly not only because it drops the Steelers to 2-3, but also because the injuries piled up for Pittsburgh. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey and tackle Marcus Gilbert both suffered leg injuries, while running back Rashard Mendenhall suffered an apparent Achilles injury, and running back Isaac Redman, who was having a great game catching passes out of the backfield, left with an ankle injury.

Despite facing a lot of pressure, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a strong night, completing 24 of 40 passes for 363 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was also effective, completing 25 of 44 passes for 290 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

And when Suisham’s field goal was short with 49 seconds left to play, Hasselbeck maneuvered the Titans into position for Bironas’s game winner. This was a win the Titans needed, and a loss the Steelers could ill afford.

That’s cool, we’ll keep him in Indy for a while. I mean, he’s got a good track record, coached manning, made Big Ben that much better… Will make luck a top 5 QB in a year!!!! —————

The Eagles only stay in games because their pass rush somehow makes timely plays in the backfield. Their LBs and DBs are nothing special, but that’s the only reason the Eagles are winning these close, low-scoring games. Offensively, they’re just as unbalanced and putrid as the Steelers have shown in half their games this year.

However, never underestimate rivalry games. The Steelers were amped up Sunday. The Eagles blew their entire roll to beat the Giants. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Eagles lost to a half of one-dimensional Lions team Sunday.

lilrob10201 you are right on the number there. Everyone talks about the Ravens D getting old, but this Steelers D looks old and slow. The injuries on offensive line sure didn’t help the Steelers out any, but after watching what my Vikes did defensively last week to the Titans offense and seeing the Titans moving the ball all over the place just says something is wrong here. Sure no Troy Polamalu certainly hurts, however shouldn’t they be pretty used to not having him on the field by now? I mean lets face it he’s a bandaid. Guy gets hurt walking.

To all the many Roethlisberger Obsesses: This loss is the reason quarterbacks should be associated with won/loss records. This game was a total team breakdown.
    – The offense settled for too many field goals against a defense that was allowing 36 points per game.
    – The special teams allowed a punt to be blocked that set up a one-yard TD “drive.”
    – The defense simply is no longer capable of carrying the entire team as it had done for nearly a decade.
    – Tomlin’s decision to attempt a 54-yard field goal instead of punting was absurd.
Roethlisberger is having his best season statistically.
    Yippee!!!
But the TEAM is 2-3 overall, 0-3 on the road and 1-3 within the conference.
I might feel a little better about all this if the Steelers were actually losing to good teams.

  49. andrewproughcfe says: Oct 12, 2012 1:44 AM

Attempting the 54 yarder with 1 minute left was a game-losing decision. Tomlin had to know there was no way Suisham makes that kick, and there’s also no way his team’s hideous 4th quarter pass defense keeps Tennessee from throwing down the middle of the field for the final 49 seconds with 2 timeouts in their pocket.

Frustrating loss for several reasons, some of which are as follows:

    (1) The Titans score a Field Goal that hits into the uprights yet still goes through. Seriously?

    (2) Keenan Lewis drops EASY pic that would have clinched the game – Hass dropped it right into his bread basket with no one around. It was like playing catch at the family picnic with your 6 year old nephew.

    (3) Ryan Clark dropped a pic too, but it was not as easy as the one Lewis bumbled like a clown, so we’ll give Clark a pass.

    (4) Ike Taylor possibly setting an NFL record for getting Defensive P.I. every 6 seconds on 3rd and long. Ike really sucked tonight. Everyone knows he has atrocious hands and can’t catch, but he can’t even bat balls away – which takes even less coordination. C’mon Ike.

    (5) Blocked punt recovered by the Titans at the one yard line. Nice.

    (6) OLs and RBs dropping like flies. Pouncey, Gilbert, Foster toasted. Mendy and Redman dunzo. I’ve heard of costly victories. This was a costly effort in a losing cause. Just brutal.

    (7) When our kicker is trying to boot a career long field goal, we “ice” our own kicker. We call timeout. What the _________?

    (8) Of course, we also had to engage in that inane counter-productive practice of trying to “ice” the opponents’ kicker. Naturally, it failed.

There are more reasons this blew, such as Ben leading an extended drive before the first half closed that ended with him choosing to throw to an absolutely blanketed receiver. Result? Pic. Secondary result? A field goal that proved to be the difference in the game.

Frustrating loss on many levels. Congrats to the Titans for persevering in the face of adversity. As for us, we need to get our “act” together … fast.

The Steelers are awful. But they’ll probably beat the Ravens one out of two because they’re overrated as well.

You’re a Bengals fan, right? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t those same overrated Ravens crush the Bengals the first week of the season? I hate it when moronic comments force me, as a Steeler fan, to defend the Ravens.

I would like to know how in the world Ike Taylor continues to make this team. Awful CB who gets burned constantly and draws PI flags when not. Kenan Lewis outplayed him by a mile last night.

I was happy when I saw Mundy not in the starting lineup, but, alas, even on special teams he finds a way to hurt the Steelers. He makes that block and that punt gets away clean. Unbelievable.

If they can’t win at Oakland or Tennessee, there isn’t much hope for wins at Balt or NYG or even Dallas. 8-8 or even 7-9 is possible.

First, great win for the Titans, you have a very talented team. Especially with Britt in the lineup.

Second, you steeler fans need to stop trolling RAVEN articles after this. You lost to the Raiders and Titans, you are under .500, you have half your overrated team hurt, Roethlisberger is the king of RB checkdowns and can’t read defenses, Matt Hasselbeck (whom I have always respected as a gamer) owned your sorry defense.

Oh and the Orioles won. Good day to be a Baltimore fan. Congrats Titans, glad you beat this overrated social security collecting team. Good luck to you guys, hope Jake Locker comes back stronger than ever.

  64. tommy57 says: Oct 12, 2012 6:00 AM

Agree with Stiller43 – 9-7 season at best.

Too many players to replace in a single draft, so several years of rebuilding ahead, by which time Ben is past his prime.

    He’s won his last Superbowl.

  65. theandy59 says: Oct 12, 2012 6:13 AM

Tomlin needs to get himself and this team back to basics. So many injuries on our own O-line because fatty Marcus Gilbert won’t BEND HIS KNEES…he tries to stiff arm every block, gets knocked on his fat ass, and rolls our linemen’s knees with him when he goes.

Can someone please explain to Keenan Lewis exactly what he’s supposed to be doing out there because I truly don’t think he knows…oh, and it probably shouldn’t be Ike who tells him, ’cause while he may know what to do, he just can’t execute. He got beat every down last night.

Starting to think Tomlin got a lot of undeserved credit these last few years…it was the vets leading the team and now they’re gone Mike isn’t replacing them for discipline and motivation.

We’re playing this badly and I can’t even blame my favorite punching bag Big Ben…gonna be a very long season for the black & gold.

Congrats to Titans fans for getting a gritty win. I don’t care how teams played in the past, these are professional teams and are capable of playing well in any given game. When you give up a one yard TD and a FG bounces through for 10 points, it sure impacts the outcome. But that is not why they lost. The defense has done it (or has NOT done it) again. Forget the injuries excuse. They did not make the big stops. Taylor was awful. Easy interceptions were dropped. Harrison gives up the 25 yarder at the end. But maybe worse was Tomlin trying a 54 yard FG with the game tied. The miss gave the Titans a short field. Either let Ben (one of the best and having a pretty good game) try to make a play or punt and go for OT. This one and the Raiders loss may hurt at the end of the season.

The difference is I’m still a fan and still support them 100%. When you have a team with 70+ years of history behind it, you’re going to have to deal with down years. It’s hard to believe the Steelers beat the Eagles last week and then lose to the Titans who were manhandled by the Vikings.

Spoken like a still bitter giants fan. Wow

The football gods are frowning on the arrogant (Steelers, Jets, Packers & Eagles)

I’m assuming your a ravens fan. No team us more arrogant, with only one Lombardi, a overrated qb than ur team. Idiot

All the trolls out as expected. Too many injuries and we have no depth at all.

    ————————————————

Many teams in the past have overcome their injuries to win games and make the playoffs. Hell, even win the Super Bowl. Teams should try to overcome them, not hide behind them and make excuses when they don’t win.

    chas88:
You make an excellent point about teams overcoming adversities. In 2010, the Steelers managed to get off to a 3-1 start even without The Almighty Ben.
But please keep in mind that it’s not the Steelers themselves making excuses but rather their fans and the Pittsburgh media, most of whom don’t know if a football is stuffed or puffed.
It’s nearly impossible to be a Steelers follower … only because of the Roethlisberger-obsessed fans and cheerleading media.
I just don’t think I can take another nationally-televised sit-down interview with Roethlisberger telling the world that he’s a “fierce competitor and winner.”
    Boring.

How can that many injuries not seriously be considered a major hindrance ? One or two injuries maybe – but half a dozen ? No team can successfully absorb that quantity in that short period of time and maintain significant competitiveness , they had tight ends playing guard and tackle for Pete’s sake !
Considering the amount of injuries that occured in the time span of a few hours and being on the road and that they still lost in the final seconds on a FG indicates the players were playing to overcoming the significant injury, I can’t say the same for the coaching staff.

Not very good coaching on Steelers part , this looks like a 7 and 9 team at best .

The steelers are soft and second rate. Just like their city and fan base.

Oh no we lost a close game! Our D isn’t dominant! Boo hoo , bunch of fair weathers… as for the trolls, we know you love to hate us, we don’t care. Even in the down years we ain’t a pushover and hienz field will still sell out and chances are we’ll be in your citys and towns sporting the black and gold. But hey misery loves company so keep on talking junk… and we’ll keep on giving you something to talk about , good or bad…

I’m a diehard Tennessee Titans fan. I am very happy that the Titans defeated the Steelers, and I am glad all the Steelers fans are all moaning and groaning over the loss because of all the many years these Steelers fans gloated.

The Browns need to focus on winning one game….

I hope the Titans start Matt Hasselbeck at Quarterback next week, sticking with the hot hand at QB…

    GO TITANS GO !

the Steelers as usual playing down to the competition again, got to question Tomlins decision to let Suisham kick a 54 yder. did he really think he was going to make that kick knowing if he didnt he was going to give the Titans the ball at midfield basically giving them the gm.. this gm is a reflection of the HC not having his team ready to play.

  105. briggy59 says: Oct 14, 2012 9:24 AM

The Steelers need to take a serious look at whoever is in charge of strength and conditioning – they looked like they were made out of paper Thursday night.
