Ex-Raider to stand trial for four murders, could face death penalty

Anthony Wayne Smith, the 11th overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft who spent eight years with the Raiders, has been ordered to stand trial for four murders and could face the death penalty.

A Los Angeles County judge ruled after a four-day preliminary hearing that there is sufficient evidence for the 45-year-old Smith to stand trial. All four murder charges will be part of one trial, and the charges make him eligible for the death penalty, although the prosecution has not decided whether to pursue it.

In April, Smith’s trial for a 2008 killing of a man found stomped, beaten and shot in Southern California ended in a hung jury, with eight jurors voting guilty and four jurors voting not guilty. Now Smith will face a retrial for that killing and also stand trial for the 1999 shooting deaths of two brothers, and for the 2001 stabbing death of another man.

Smith’s lawyer says prosecutors have no physical evidence and no motive.

Smith was a talented defensive end who had double-digit sacks in each of his first three seasons, but his career fell short of expectations as personal issues began to affect his play. During the 1996 season the Raiders suspended him after he failed to show up for a game, and after the 1997 season he opted out of his contract with the Raiders but didn’t sign with another team. A year later, according to prosecutors, he committed his first murder.

He was a man ahead of his time. He’d have been a perfect fit for today’s NFL.

Wouldn’t this be the epitome of Raider Nation? Big, Bad Ugly monsters that wear spikes and carry weapons that appear ready to mutilate at a moments notice? Surely everyone’s seen those fans in the stands with their make-up and all…

It seems that the raiders promote this type of behavior and the fans relish in it. Nothing surprises me when it comes from Oakland CA.

It’s more expensive to pursue the death penalty because of all the appeals, just do life without parole if found guilty.

Of course that won’t happen he’ll get life and a 47k a year bill for those unfortunate taxpayers who live in the overtaxed, bankrupt state.

Why is it every time there’s an “ex-NFLer” committing a horrible crime (other than O.J. Simpson) it’s somebody that no one has ever heard of? I love football but I have never heard of this loser!?

Michael David Smith: He was a high first-round pick and had three straight seasons with double-digit sacks. I assure you, plenty of football fans have heard of him.

The Raiders have no more ex-players who have gotten into trouble than any other team, and, no, the organization doesn’t promote criminal behavior.

Some of you just chose to ignore the facts due to your own bias. It’s too bad. Come out of your mommy’s basement and experience the real world. You might learn something.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The Raiders have three rings and still have one of the highest winning percentages in football, even after a decade of futility. How many rings do you have and what’s your overall won lost record? Yeah, I thought so.

I don’t see how the raiders promote that behavior and as a Raiders fan it makes me sick!! That was probably one of the most ignorant statements I’ve read on this site!!! But lets talk about ur patriots and what they promote….u have a coach that had to cheat to get his super bowl rings!! I mean u guys r 0-2 in super bowls since spygate!!!! So looks like ol bill isn’t that great huh, u guys haven’t won a ring now that u can’t cheat! So maybe the Raiders have had a couple bad eggs but at least we shouldn’t have an * by our super bowl victories!!!

And you thought the losing would end when the crypt keeper passed on. BB won 11 games the year he didn’t have #12. Do you remember what 11 wins looks like raider fan?

  49. mikeanthonymirabella says: Oct 13, 2012 3:29 PM

His name if I remember is Anthony Smith not Michael Smith and he was very good when he played but just like Orenthial James Simpson, once football is over does not give you a free pass in the law system but in O.J. case, I could be wrong. The /Raiders of old were misfits and could not make it on other teams but excelled when they came to the Raiders. That strategy doesn’t work anymore although I wish it did. Guys play for money now and even when they do, like Sapp, Moss and worst of all Russell, just lay back and take advantage of what was once a legendary organization. I miss Otis Sistrunk, Lyle Alzado, Ted Hendrickson and George Atkinson that just played to play the game and gave their heart not how much was in their wallet to get that second chance.

  50. mullman76 says: Oct 13, 2012 5:50 PM

@pats42 and every other donkey RAIDER hater out there- To think the RAIDERS would promote/condone this only serves to illustrate how hatred can be blinding.

You are a fool- the man killed 4 people (allegedly), this is to be taken seriously. It has nothing to do with football.

Your ignorance and intolerance is reprehensible, you should feel shame.

PS- the patriots are a franchise seeded on a BS call (tuck rule) and rooted in cheating (spygate). The chargers are a joke and have reached the lowly heights of the seahawks, falcons and panthers- one trip to the SB and that is all– in 50+ years- like I said, a joke.

Keep relishing those regular season wins charger fan- the next big game they win will be their first…

  52. raiders757 says: Oct 13, 2012 5:58 PM

I remember this guy. He had so much potential, and as the article pointed out, started his career off very well. I still have his guys football cards somewhere in my old collection. It’s sad to see someone with so much potential fizzle out due to personal reasons, and even worse, become a murdering scumbag.

  53. Rod says: Oct 13, 2012 6:34 PM

I lived in Oxnard CA when the Raiders training camp was there. I met Anthony several times, and even had him sign a 94 numbered jersey, ( his number) along with most of the rest of the team.
It hangs in my home today. It’s coming down tomorrow.
