Justin Smith says he doesn’t know who Kevin Gilbride is

The war of words that erupted between Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh over whether or not 49ers defensive end Justin Smith gets away with holding left Smith asking just one question: Who’s Kevin Gilbride?

Gilbride said that Smith gets away with murder because he blatantly holds and the officials don’t call it. Harbaugh issued an angry refutation of Gilbride’s claims, accusing the Giants’ coaching staff of trying to influence the officials.

Smith wasn’t quite as angry as Harbaugh, possibly because Smith didn’t know who Gilbride was.

“I really don’t know what he’s talking about, to be honest with you,” Smith said. “But if he’s trying to talk himself, get some bulletin board stuff, good for him. Whatever they need to do. It doesn’t bother me. I’m going to have him look him up and see who it is.”

Smith also said he doesn’t understand why Gilbride is claiming he holds offensive linemen, because in Smith’s opinion it’s the opposing offensive linemen who hold him.

“I mean, they hold me,” Smith said of offensive linemen. “So, whatever. That’s the first I’ve heard of it. That’s the first time I’ve heard of an offensive coordinator complaining about it. I mean, they hold me. They just hold.”

A defensive lineman complaining about getting held is the norm. An offensive coordinator complaining about a defensive lineman holding is something we rarely see, which is why Gilbride’s comments gained traction this week. And those comments are why Smith now knows who Gilbride is.

  1. He would be the guy that calls the O plays and has two rings
    Now who is Justin Smith?
Is that his real name or is he in whitless protection? lot of smiths on that niners team the roster sounds like the sign in book at a hot sheet motel.

  2. I’m a Giants fan, but after watching some game film of Smith, I couldn’t see any evidence of holding. All I see is a very strong and fast defensive end who is scary good at stopping the run.

Gilbride is very overrated IMO. He’s good and all, but wouldn’t be half as good if he didn’t have Manning for a quarterback. Think of how often a play breaks down for the Giants. Eli wouldn’t be so good at improvising if it weren’t for so many broken plays.

Look I’m a Giants fan, but you can’t bash Smith like that. I would pick Smith before Justin Tuck or Osi any day.

  4. Yea, I guess the guy with 72 sacks in 11 seasons is nameless bigblue…. or those 3 Pro-Bowls since joining the 49ers in 2008. Let’s not have facts get in the way.

  5. “Two rings, I know that.”

Really? The rings argument? Weak. Maybe if this was Coughlin or Eli Manning but this is Kevin Gilbride the offensive coordinator his reputation doesn’t get the (often times ridiculous) boost that rings give certain players and coaches. Plus Gilbride’s offense didn’t exactly do anything notable in the two Super Bowls he won, the Giants only scored 17 and 19 points.

Justin Smith is much better than Kevin Gilbride at what he does. He’s one of the most dominant defensive players in the league (he was knocking Eli to the turf every other play in the NFC title game) and is somehow still one of the most underrated players in the NFL.

  6. If you read all of Gilbride’s quote, even he said Justin Smith is a “beast”. Niners are making something out of nothing.

Disrespect is playing the “I don’t know who that is” card about someone who’s been in football since before you were BORN.

That’s funny, because Eli is an extremely overrated quarterback. Can you imagine if he played in another city? You would never hear about him. Ever. Because he’s average.

But no, he plays in New York, so he’s shoved in our faces. But at least the Giants have won something, unlike the Jets who don’t just get shoved in our faces, the get shot. The fact that the Jets get as much national coverage as they do for a bad team is maddening. People talk all the time about preserving the integrity of the game. How about preserving the integrity of coverage of the game.

  8. Gilbride is hoping Smith spend’s his time holding his OLinemen instead of putting the hurt on whichever poor smuck is going to have the football in the backfield.

  9. gilbride better hope he put together a master plan for tommorow because our NINERS r going to bring it, i hope we smash the giants like we did teams the last two weeks because i know during mop up time we definitely are not going to be taking a knee will shove down their throats and then coughlin with his red face is going to be crying in his press conf.

  10. I love Giants fans getting all “we have more rings” to 49er fans. If you want to include history, that’s fine. If you want to pull the “well, we just mean this current coach and core of players” well the 49ers are in their second year of that, so a little absurd to pull the rings card.

Giants have got to be the luckiest franchise in NFL. It took a fumble on a bad exchange between Young and Craig and then a wide right by Norwood to win their second superbowl. Then it takes a helmet catch to win another one. Then it takes a missed catch by Welker who regularly catches in the neighborhood of 100 every year and is generally extremely reliable to win another.
Gilbride is lucky he has any rings.

  12. He hits people with his head for a living. You could fill Candlestick with what he doesn’t know.

  13. Why would you add more fuel to an already fiery 49ers squat licking their chops to get back at the Giants for last week.

My prediction, Justin Smith will dominate as always against the Giants and Gil-not-so-bright will eat his words.

  15. As a NFL fan im tired of giants fans saying two rings we are good the 49ers have 5 rings compared to your 4 you dont see other fans doing that be classy giants fans

  16. Gilbride was trying to plant it into the officials heads because that’s the only reason you would come out and say that in the media.

Justin Smith doesn’t do any more than any other lineman in the league so I guess Gilbride is saying defensive linemen everywhere are getting away from murder.

  17. If you watch, every once in a while he does hold, which is odd for a defensive player. Gilbride is right, and Smith is an idiot if he doesn’t know who he is. Gilbride is an Offensive genius.

  18. Don’t bother arguing with Giants fans, they are the most hopelessly idiotic pack of mutts you will ever encounter. If they’re beating you, they will relentlessly talk sh*t. If they aren’t beating you, they’ll bring up their past success as a counter argument. If your team has had more past success than theirs, they will gladly inform you how many World Series rings the yankees have in comparison to your home town MLB team.

  19. I think this ‘war of words’ between Gilbride and Harbaugh is rather dumb on both sides, but the dumbest thing is for Smith to show his ignorance and not know who the opposing OC is that he’s going to play against next week…and that he has played against in the past… But you know, stupid is as stupid does…

  20. I realize that it’s a go-to move in professional sports to act like you’ve never heard of someone who talks trash about you.

But to be in the NFL and say you’ve never heard of Kevin Gilbride makes you sound pretty stupid.

  21. It still drives me Loco that the Bengals got rid of him. 95% of the fan base wanted him gone, “cause all his tackles where after the line” I’m like woah when a De is one of your top tacklers, hang on to this guy.

Just as 99% of the people wanted Palmer over Andy Dalton, Calling Dalton a scrub, etc…. But that is another story.

Justin Smith never gives up. He is the opposite of Haynesworth+Moss. They could be down by 50 and this guy is still going at 100%.

I forgot all about Bear. I remember the 49ers drafted and cut that guy fast. He’s still in the league?

  24. let me tell you who Justin Smith is…. he’s the guy that used to hang out at the local bar in the neighborhood I lived when he played for the Bengals. I saw him in there with Eric Steinbach right before his last season in Cinci and wished him good luck for the upcoming season. He responded with a cheers saying “No. Good Luck Tonight.” and preceded to the dance floor to dry hump a local college girl around the bar. That cemented him as one of my favorite players. Love that guy…..

  25. He’s the guy that runs a modern day run and shoot offense that often lights up a scoreboard and has won two super bowls.

His QB put up 316 yds in NFC championship and won.

Well ironically, since you (a non-Giants fan) brought it up, I suppose I should inform you the Giants are actually 8 time NFL champions.

  29. This “two rings” thing is getting pretty tired. I’m still looking for the first Giants fan to admit that they were damn lucky just to sneak out of SF with a win last season. That’s the truth and you all know it. And, that was against a severely limited Niner offense that you won’t be seeing this season. So, enough bravado. If you know anything about “the cowboy”, you should know that he probably wasn’t kidding when he said he would have to “look up who that is.” The guy is all ball. All he’s thinking about is the game plan.

  30. For 49ers fans talking about 5 rings and others talking. The giants have 7 championships. 3rd most to only the packers and bears and have been to more title games then any team in the NFL. So unless your a packers or bears fan then nobody can talk.

I don’t like killdrivr at all but leave t the the 49ers and 49erd ignorant fans to mis read his comment praising smith(justing not Alex ignorant friends)

  31. And, G-Men fans, do you really want to play the Superbowl rings game with Niner fans? And really, when you look at these two teams, which one looks closer to its next ring to you? Be honest now.

  32. Really gotta be a m oron not to know who Gilbride is. Smith just took a jab.

Gotta give advantage to GMen for pre game hoopla edge this week.

Should be a slugfest tomorrow. Hope both teams don’t get too injured and it’s just a clean mean game.

  33. Jets asked who Cruz was last year and knew after a 99 TD ended their season.

Don’t see Gilbride running a deep post but can see him calling a good game with Eli, nicks, Cruz on his side.

  34. All this talk about rings, you giants fans do realize the 9ers were first to 5. I know its been a long time but you can’t act like they are the Lions or something. And #6 is coming this year. And smith is a pro bowler that is one of the anchors on the best D in the NFL so Who is Gilbride

I watch and study the game funny Justin Smith never heard his name called at the Super Bowl last or any other year.

And 49ers fans if the Giants are so bad why did you coach jump in the Giants trash can and take out IR Jacobs and can not run a route Manningham.
If you watch football you would notice that Jacobs was slowing down the run game and no one and I mean no one misses Manningham.

The Giants have WR’s they do not activate that are better then the trash your fine upstanding coach took out of the NYG dumpster

  36. Who’s Justin Smith? I’m a Lions fan, and Rob Sims, our left guard who played in Seattle for a while and faced him twice a year, said Justin Smith is the most dominating player he’s ever played against.

  37. @giantschamps

The Giants are 3-2 this year with 3 wins against the Browns, Bucks and Panther’s. Those teams have a combined record of 2-12. They haven’t beat anyone this year so I would talk about opponents! Hahaha

  38. What is with some of these guys that seem to take such pride in the ignorance of the players or coaches of other teams? You’d think the opposing offensive coordinator’s name might come up in one of the defense’s meetings given that this is 3rd time they’ve played in the last season and change. Were you awake in any of those Justin???

  39. Justin may not know who Gilbride is … But he sure knows the team that he coaches that went into candlestick and sent him into his offseason last year….. as they marched on to win it all…. 9ers havnt beat a team with a winning record at this point …. there overrated reality continues this week as the #2 offense in the league comes to town….

  40. As a Giants fan, I must say I hate trash talking from both sides. People don’t realize how absolutely idiotic they sound with “I know the 49ers are going to stomp…” or “When the Giants beat the crap out of the 9ers…”.

Nobody on this board is Nostradamus. Nobody knows anything, and most don’t even know that much about football. I am just looking for a great game, nobody hurt, and hope these 2 great and storied franchises meet up again in January.

    Good luck to both teams.

  41. I can’t say whether Smith holds or not but it is often a smart play if the D lineman can get away with it. The thing is it usually takes a very big, very strong man to get away with it. Smith is certainly all of that. The only way to get it called is to complain, loudly. No official is in a good place to see it with the Umpire in the backfield.

  42. Screw Justin Smith “Who’s Kevin Gilbride” really jerk? He’s a 2 time SB Winner, now what have you done?! That’s what’s wrong with these players always talking when they haven’t won anything in their careers… Go GMEN! Oh and to the idiot who wrote he’s overrated you are a fool

  43. Ekrueger2012 again… who have the giants beat this year? 3 teams with a combined record of 2-12 who put up 68 points againts that “scary defense ” in those 3 game! Come on man! #2 offense? Look who they played!! Haha

    ———————————————————-
so you came on a football website to tell us that you hadn’t heard of one of the best defensive (and most destructive) players in the NFL for the last three years ?

Who was (practically) dominant against the Giants line in the playoff game last year ? Heck, most olines.

And has been voted to the ProBowl three seasons in a row ?

A man who was ranked number 17 in the NFL Network’s top 100 players ?

A man who is constantly double teamed and in a 3-4 still pressures the QB and plays DT too ?

A man who is generally regarded to have the best motor in the NFL ?

A defensive lineman who has the longest streak for consecutive games in the NFL at 171 ? And plays every down ?

Ah that’s a shame, he’s really very good, pretty much impossible to switch on any football show or go to any football site without hearing how great Justin Smith is.

    Because he really is.

Don’t know the other fella but I’m sure he’s good too.

  46. San Fran has plenty of Super Bowl rings, with gr8 qb’s at the helm only one team in Sundays match up has a gr8 qb, but I’m sure u intelligent 9ers fans can’t admit even that, enjoy ur Alex smith lead all mosts.

  47. Granite Smith may not like what Gilbride said, but he mentions he don’t know who Gilbride is?…Child Please! He’s the man that offensively orchestrated 2 SuperBowl wins within 5 years. Also put 49ers on the couch last year. Google “Keven Gilbride” Mr Smith LMAO!!!

that’s 8 titles for the Giants to 5 for the 9ers. 49er fans are just like Steeler fans. They pretend that anything that happened before 1967 is irrelevant. Probably because their teams were doormats for 4 decades.

  49. Never forget clueless Niner fans your team is chasing the Giants the SB Champs. They made adjustments to the team in order to beat the Champs… so right about now you fools sound like Chumps

  50. Listen San Fran u dnt wanna hear abt our Rings and U have 5 Rings last one came when Deion Sanders was at CB. The Giants are the Reigning World Football Champions. A win by the champs on sunday will send a statement that the champs are lookin to REPEAT!!!!!

  52. Why do 9er fans come on here talking all kinds of crap on every story, then complain about how Giants fans come on here and talk crap all the time?

I have news for you girls. It doesn’t matter if the 9ers smack the Giants down or not. The Giants won when it counted, and no amount of revisionist history or whining will change that. If the Giants lose the rest of their games, it won’t matter. They won it last year with yet another historic playoff run. Deal with it.

If 9er fans want to talk about luck, then let’s go back to Trey Junkin. Lucky day for you guys that mysteriously never gets mentioned.

Or how about the ridiculous “The Catch.” Montana was lucky he wasn’t sacked before he threw it. He’s also lucky it was even caught, since he was just throwing the ball away on that play.

Like I said in another thread, watch a game once in a while, you might learn something.

P.S. Eli threw for more than 300 yards against your defense last year.

Probably wont happen today, but like I said. It doesn’t matter now.

  53. @giantschumps1

Lions, Packers, Jets are good teams having a bad year. They’re teams that should be better than their record indicates. The tams the Giants just played bad teams and battled when the “Defending Chumps” should’ve easily put away! Niners beat those teams in decisive fashion!
