Justin Smith says he doesn’t know who Kevin Gilbride is

Pittsburgh Steelers v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

The war of words that erupted between Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh over whether or not 49ers defensive end Justin Smith gets away with holding left Smith asking just one question: Who’s Kevin Gilbride?

Gilbride said that Smith gets away with murder because he blatantly holds and the officials don’t call it. Harbaugh issued an angry refutation of Gilbride’s claims, accusing the Giants’ coaching staff of trying to influence the officials.

Smith wasn’t quite as angry as Harbaugh, possibly because Smith didn’t know who Gilbride was.

“I really don’t know what he’s talking about, to be honest with you,” Smith said. “But if he’s trying to talk himself, get some bulletin board stuff, good for him. Whatever they need to do. It doesn’t bother me. I’m going to have him look him up and see who it is.”

Smith also said he doesn’t understand why Gilbride is claiming he holds offensive linemen, because in Smith’s opinion it’s the opposing offensive linemen who hold him.

“I mean, they hold me,” Smith said of offensive linemen. “So, whatever. That’s the first I’ve heard of it. That’s the first time I’ve heard of an offensive coordinator complaining about it. I mean, they hold me. They just hold.”

A defensive lineman complaining about getting held is the norm. An offensive coordinator complaining about a defensive lineman holding is something we rarely see, which is why Gilbride’s comments gained traction this week. And those comments are why Smith now knows who Gilbride is.

Is that his real name or is he in whitless protection? lot of smiths on that niners team the roster sounds like the sign in book at a hot sheet motel.

I’m a Giants fan, but after watching some game film of Smith, I couldn’t see any evidence of holding. All I see is a very strong and fast defensive end who is scary good at stopping the run.

Gilbride is very overrated IMO. He’s good and all, but wouldn’t be half as good if he didn’t have Manning for a quarterback. Think of how often a play breaks down for the Giants. Eli wouldn’t be so good at improvising if it weren’t for so many broken plays.

    “Two rings, I know that.”

Really? The rings argument? Weak. Maybe if this was Coughlin or Eli Manning but this is Kevin Gilbride the offensive coordinator his reputation doesn’t get the (often times ridiculous) boost that rings give certain players and coaches. Plus Gilbride’s offense didn’t exactly do anything notable in the two Super Bowls he won, the Giants only scored 17 and 19 points.

Justin Smith is much better than Kevin Gilbride at what he does. He’s one of the most dominant defensive players in the league (he was knocking Eli to the turf every other play in the NFC title game) and is somehow still one of the most underrated players in the NFL.

If you read all of Gilbride’s quote, even he said Justin Smith is a “beast”. Niners are making something out of nothing.

Disrespect is playing the “I don’t know who that is” card about someone who’s been in football since before you were BORN.

    meytonpanning says:

“Gilbride is very overrated IMO. He’s good and all, but wouldn’t be half as good if he didn’t have Manning for a quarterback. ”

That’s funny, because Eli is an extremely overrated quarterback. Can you imagine if he played in another city? You would never hear about him. Ever. Because he’s average.

But no, he plays in New York, so he’s shoved in our faces. But at least the Giants have won something, unlike the Jets who don’t just get shoved in our faces, the get shot. The fact that the Jets get as much national coverage as they do for a bad team is maddening. People talk all the time about preserving the integrity of the game. How about preserving the integrity of coverage of the game.

  13. ripster65 says: Oct 13, 2012 4:56 PM

  14. unionslie says: Oct 13, 2012 5:03 PM

I love Giants fans getting all “we have more rings” to 49er fans. If you want to include history, that’s fine. If you want to pull the “well, we just mean this current coach and core of players” well the 49ers are in their second year of that, so a little absurd to pull the rings card.

Giants have got to be the luckiest franchise in NFL. It took a fumble on a bad exchange between Young and Craig and then a wide right by Norwood to win their second superbowl. Then it takes a helmet catch to win another one. Then it takes a missed catch by Welker who regularly catches in the neighborhood of 100 every year and is generally extremely reliable to win another.
Gilbride is lucky he has any rings.

Gilbride was trying to plant it into the officials heads because that’s the only reason you would come out and say that in the media.

Justin Smith doesn’t do any more than any other lineman in the league so I guess Gilbride is saying defensive linemen everywhere are getting away from murder.

  28. EJ says: Oct 13, 2012 6:14 PM

If you watch, every once in a while he does hold, which is odd for a defensive player. Gilbride is right, and Smith is an idiot if he doesn’t know who he is. Gilbride is an Offensive genius.

Don’t bother arguing with Giants fans, they are the most hopelessly idiotic pack of mutts you will ever encounter. If they’re beating you, they will relentlessly talk sh*t. If they aren’t beating you, they’ll bring up their past success as a counter argument. 30. larryfinfan says: Oct 13, 2012 6:24 PM

I think this ‘war of words’ between Gilbride and Harbaugh is rather dumb on both sides, but the dumbest thing is for Smith to show his ignorance and not know who the opposing OC is that he’s going to play against next week…and that he has played against in the past… But you know, stupid is as stupid does…

  31. realitypolice says: Oct 13, 2012 6:30 PM

But to be in the NFL and say you’ve never heard of Kevin Gilbride makes you sound pretty stupid.

  32. idriveamoped says: Oct 13, 2012 6:30 PM

It still drives me Loco that the Bengals got rid of him. 95% of the fan base wanted him gone, “cause all his tackles where after the line” I’m like woah when a De is one of your top tacklers, hang on to this guy.

Just as 99% of the people wanted Palmer over Andy Dalton, Calling Dalton a scrub, etc…. But that is another story.

Justin Smith never gives up. He is the opposite of Haynesworth+Moss. They could be down by 50 and this guy is still going at 100%.

let me tell you who Justin Smith is…. he’s the guy that used to hang out at the local bar in the neighborhood I lived when he played for the Bengals. I saw him in there with Eric Steinbach right before his last season in Cinci and wished him good luck for the upcoming season. He responded with a cheers saying “No. Good Luck Tonight.” and preceded to the dance floor to dry hump a local college girl around the bar. That cemented him as one of my favorite players. Love that guy…..

  44. billb49 says: Oct 13, 2012 7:37 PM

This “two rings” thing is getting pretty tired. I’m still looking for the first Giants fan to admit that they were damn lucky just to sneak out of SF with a win last season. That’s the truth and you all know it. And, that was against a severely limited Niner offense that you won’t be seeing this season. So, enough bravado. If you know anything about “the cowboy”, you should know that he probably wasn’t kidding when he said he would have to “look up who that is.” The guy is all ball. All he’s thinking about is the game plan.

  45. giantsfanlewis says: Oct 13, 2012 7:46 PM

so you came on a football website to tell us that you hadn’t heard of one of the best defensive (and most destructive) players in the NFL for the last three years ?

Who was (practically) dominant against the Giants line in the playoff game last year ? Heck, most olines.

And has been voted to the ProBowl three seasons in a row ?

A man who was ranked number 17 in the NFL Network’s top 100 players ?

A man who is constantly double teamed and in a 3-4 still pressures the QB and plays DT too ?

A man who is generally regarded to have the best motor in the NFL ?

A defensive lineman who has the longest streak for consecutive games in the NFL at 171 ? And plays every down ?

Ah that’s a shame, he’s really very good, pretty much impossible to switch on any football show or go to any football site without hearing how great Justin Smith is.

    Because he really is.

Don’t bother arguing with Giants fans, they are the most hopelessly idiotic pack of mutts you will ever encounter. If they’re beating you, they will relentlessly talk sh*t. If they aren’t beating you, they’ll bring up their past success as a counter argument. If your team has had more past success than theirs, they will gladly inform you how many World Series rings the yankees have in comparison to your home town MLB team.

One minor correction; “..how many World Series rings the Yankees bought in comparison to your local home town MLB team.”

Why do 9er fans come on here talking all kinds of crap on every story, then complain about how Giants fans come on here and talk crap all the time?

I have news for you girls. It doesn’t matter if the 9ers smack the Giants down or not. The Giants won when it counted, and no amount of revisionist history or whining will change that. If the Giants lose the rest of their games, it won’t matter. They won it last year with yet another historic playoff run. Deal with it.

If 9er fans want to talk about luck, then let’s go back to Trey Junkin. Lucky day for you guys that mysteriously never gets mentioned.

Or how about the ridiculous “The Catch.” Montana was lucky he wasn’t sacked before he threw it. He’s also lucky it was even caught, since he was just throwing the ball away on that play.

Like I said in another thread, watch a game once in a while, you might learn something.

P.S. Eli threw for more than 300 yards against your defense last year.

Probably wont happen today, but like I said. It doesn’t matter now.

Lions, Packers, Jets are good teams having a bad year. They’re teams that should be better than their record indicates. The tams the Giants just played bad teams and battled when the “Defending Chumps” should’ve easily put away! Niners beat those teams in decisive fashion!

Excellent game Giants! I’ll my crow, well done!

What happened today, frontrunner? SF has not beaten anyone of worth. When teams hit them in the mouth, they don’t hit back. Good luck expecting that below average hack QB to lead you back when you are behind by more than a FG.
