Falcons pull out late win over Raiders

Matt Bryant AP

In a game that was far closer than it should have been, the Atlanta Falcons moved to 6-0 with a 23-20 win over the Raiders.

Kicker Matt Bryant made a 55-yard field goal with one second left, in response to a late drive from the Raiders to tie the game after Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel jumped a route and gave Atlanta a seven-point lead with less than three minutes to play.

The high-powered Falcons offense wasn’t, with three interceptions and meager rushing numbers.  But it was in combination enough to pull coach Mike Smith into a tie with Dan Reeves for the franchise lead in regular-season wins at 49.

And game completes Atlanta’s four-team tour of the AFC West.  Their season-opening string also includes wins over the Panthers and Redskins.

Wow, what a game. Hats off to the Falcons, they found a way to get it done.

I knew the Raiders would give them a game, coming off a bye and hearing all week about how they didn’t stand a chance. That was a gutsy effort by them.

    Not good enough though.

  2. natelan69 says: Oct 14, 2012 4:15 PM

Nighty night Raiders fans! Enjoy the rest of your week!!!

    Go Chargers!!!

Take heart Raider fan… it’s really close, but I think the Chiefs suck worse than you!

  4. natelan69 says: Oct 14, 2012 4:18 PM

Hey Raiders, at least you aren’t in last place… The Cheifs haven’t had their bye week yet!!!

You’re right that it was far closer than it should have been. The Raiders could have put this game away , but they let the Falcons hang around. The Raiders played hard and could have had a better fate. When you don’t do anything for most of the second half (again), settle for FG’s, and play super conservative D on the last drive by Atlanta you get what you got – a loss.

The D simply had to stop them on the last drive. Say what you want about anything else, but that’s the ballgame.

  7. sourdough says: Oct 14, 2012 4:22 PM

As expected, the Falcons beat the Raiders and drop to 1-4 on the season. Only four more losses to reach that no-so lofty goal of ten (10) consecutive seasons w.o a winning record!

    Just lose, baby!

  8. war27 says: Oct 14, 2012 4:23 PM

What ever happened to the delay of game calls for taking a practice kick well after the timeout is called?

Two times in three games now the Falcons have done this. This time they kicked it at least 5 seconds after the TO was called

  9. natelan69 says: Oct 14, 2012 4:28 PM

With the Browns winning today, the Raiders made a strong case for worst team in the league.

  10. radrntn says: Oct 14, 2012 4:28 PM

i guess the raiders were the only ones holding today, at least according to the refs……good showing by the raiders today….chargers fans…….it’s ok we know nobody cares about the bolts…..bottom line afc west is by far the worse in the nfl, which means raiders still have hope.

lol… the Raiders have been “letting teams win” since John Gruden got fired.

Some people hate the Raiders more than they love their own team. Natelan69 is exhibit A. Since his Chargers can’t ever do anything with the talent they have, I guess he needs something to keep him going. Yes, the Raiders lost today. Yes, they’ll beat the Chargers in SD again this year. No, the Chargers won’t win a post-season game.

Btw, Oakland lost on a late field goal to Atlanta. How did the Chargers do against Atlanta?

  18. JMil_ATL says: Oct 14, 2012 4:57 PM

  21. jacobslatter says: Oct 14, 2012 5:04 PM

The Falcons have been playing to lose the last 3 games (Panthers, Redskins & Raiders) and now comes a bye week. A sluggishness streak + lounging time = a rough go versus the decent/good teams in the league late Oct./Nov.

  22. broncosnative says: Oct 14, 2012 5:04 PM

So sad, well at least the have the jags next week in which the raiders will be favorites to win.

good showing by the Raiders on the road against a good team like that..Penalties and Prevent D at the end of the game cost us..Hats off to Bryant for making that kick..it’s going to be a couple of years before Reggie gets the roster he wants with FA and the Draft

  25. souldogdave says: Oct 14, 2012 5:15 PM

If you look at the stats, the Raiders outplayed them. Howl all you want, but it’s true. Without that last lucky pick, it was over. We had more yards on the ground AND in the air. We won the turnover thing, Ryan threw 3 picks. This team was undefeated, and the Raiders took them to the lucky end.All you haters are SCARED of what’s coming.Weak comments from divisional idiots.

  26. chadsay says: Oct 14, 2012 5:19 PM

Delay of game? Are you serious? During a timeout?!?!

  27. humboldt420 says: Oct 14, 2012 5:21 PM

Does anyone else not realize the Atlanta Falcons had to claw their way to a late win over an Oakland Raiders football team that is showcasing second to third tier talent players on defense?

Maybe the Falcons are not as good as they think they are. Sure, 6-0, is an outstanding record, don’t get me wrong.

But the Raiders secondary is full of no-names as Oakland lost two of its starting corner backs.

Michael Huff — the starting free safety — is playing corner back along side Joselio Hanson and Pat Lee.

Yet, it was that same patchwork secondary that picked off 3 Matty Ice passes.

The Falcons barely beat the lowly Raiders… not a good sign moving forward.

Fortunately for Oakland fans, like myself, the Chiefs continue to be atrocious saving the Raiders from being the worst team in the league.

  28. dougydougdoug says: Oct 14, 2012 5:57 PM

    souldogdave:

As always, a “nation” member starts blathering about stats. In the air, on the ground…blah, blah, blah.

Do you know what matters? The final score, and the record of each team. I just did the math, which wasn’t terribly confident, but result seems to be that the Raiders are 1-4, and 0-2 in the division. So, uh, I know what’s coming, and it’s yet another coaching change for “your” Raiders. I assume that was what you meant when you referred to “what’s coming”.

  29. stoff13 says: Oct 14, 2012 6:14 PM

You haters astound me! How do you hate the Raiders more than you love a team? I guess because your team has always been pitiful? Other than the Donkeys, what has any other AFC West team ever done? Guess what though losers, we just came damned close to beating the undefeated Falcons! Considering that nobody else in the West has proven a damned thing this year, and our brand new coaching staff is still new, and learning, you’d better be ready to take your loser asses back to the loser hole from whence you came! Losers! Raaaaaiiiiiideeeerrrsss!!!!!!!!

natelan69 is really feeling it today. I was surprised Oakland stayed in that game. I couldn’t tell if the Raiders stepped up on defense or if Atlanta’s offense only plays well on the road against AFC West teams. It’s tough to win on the road against a good club, and I wasn’t expecting the Raiders to pull one out, but I’m surprised they didn’t get whipped by Atlanta like the Chargers did.

This is delay of game and has been called in the past.

  36. jimmysee says: Oct 14, 2012 6:56 PM

The Raiders were crippled before Reggie McKenzie got there.

The Carson Palmer trade and years of questionable drafts by Al Davis put this team in a deep deep hole.

Did they even have a draft pick this year before, what, the 4th round?!

I do not expect the Raiders to contend for much of anything for three years or so.

But I do hope they can surprise me.

  37. crise40g says: Oct 14, 2012 7:03 PM

How far did the superior Bay Area team get last season, with a brand new head coach, and exactly the same players who could barely win more than a couple games the previous season?

Try again. The Raiders are a bad team, and no “Nation” excuses about coaching (blah, blah) or schemes (blah, blah, blah) will alter that fact.

  41. hifive123 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:03 PM

    Dear Natelan69,

    Norv Turner.

  42. ch8878 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:05 PM

No one seems to be stating the facts here.

The reason the Falcons won was these bias refs calling penalties on number 71 which the Raiders don’t have a number 71, and number 49 which they don’t have a number 49 that, and 12 penalties to the Falcons 2 penalties the Raiders got jobbed all day.

The penalties killed some huge plays by the Raiders, and because of them they had to punt.

  43. raideralex99 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:06 PM

LOL … just like a said …. once the regular refs are back … the Raiders will lead the league in penalties.
    Falcons only 2 penalties … Raiders a whopping 12 for 110 yds.

  44. natelan69 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:09 PM

  45. natelan69 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:11 PM

Yeah, blame the regular refs for your loss. It couldn’t possibly be your awful quarterback, receivers, lack of depth, lack of talent and the awful front office decisions which led to those outcomes.

But keep on calling AJ Smith the idiot!

  46. dougydougdoug says: Oct 14, 2012 8:19 PM

    ch8878:

Nice! I was waiting for “nation” fanatics to start blaming the refs, too. Perfect! What’s next? Are you also going to blame the old Tijuana tour bus that brought the Raiders out to Georgia? I am older than the Raiders, and don’t remember when the Chargers were great. But I am a big believer in math, and my math tells me the Raiders are bad, the Chiefs are worse, and the Chargers and Broncos are hovering around mediocre. Charger fans are odd. They don’t care if their team is good. They’re just happy if their team is better than the Raiders. It seems like such a modest goal.

The OC might change, but the head coach will be the same next year. Management doesn’t expect Allen to take his team to the playoffs this year. In that respect, he’s a lot like Norval Turner.

    Raiderapologist…

You say that you’re older than the Raiders and don’t remember the Chargers ever being a great team?

Go look at the AFL Championship wiki. Chargers had a championship way before your team ever had a winning record. But I don’t look to the past and pretend that championships from several decades ago mean anything. You want to talk about accomplishments? How about you guys just focus on finishing with a winning record sometime.

But I’ll cut you a break. If you’re truly older than the Raiders, you must be suffering from some severe dementia.

Sorry. Didn’t realize you were talking about minor league history. I think the Raiders even have one of those AFL championships. I’m sure there is a WFL or USFL trophy that someone polishes once in awhile, but they know it’s not the same thing. I don’t spend much time bragging about the past, either, but I do understand it’s a lot easier to mock history when you don’t have any, and I do realize that after 46 years of futility, one must take their victories where they can find them, no matter how small. I got your dementia right here, son.

That’s weak. Charger fans cried about the refs last week because they lost to the Saints. It was embarrassing when they did it, and it’s the same when you do it. The only flag that pissed me off was the one where Ryan got his helmet grazed when the rusher reached out while getting held up by the blocker, and the only reason that pissed me off was because it’s a sissy rule.

  55. mikeanthonymirabella says: Oct 14, 2012 11:45 PM

When are the Raiders going to realize that they have the best kicker in the league. NOt only could he have had a chance early in the game when they decided to punt, but on the last kickoff all they had to do was call fair cath on that dinky atlanta kick and Janakoski would have had a free kick from where the ball was and won the game. Yeah it would have been about a 69 yard kick but a free kick is a free kick and they never use that rule especially with such a great kicker.

  56. JSpicoli says: Oct 15, 2012 1:57 AM

Amazing that Cornflorio writes this up like this.

The Raiders out gained them, out played them, and Palmer and playcalling gave it away. They were in game winning field goal distance with 3 minutes to go and 3rd and 6 when Palmer (who had an otherwise very good game) threw a very bad pass for the pick 6. Our D knocked the ice off Matty and Denarius Moore is an outright treat to watch. I’d appreciate watching him if he were on any team.

But unless you watched the game, which the comments above tell me, most of you haters never did, you get this kind of lame write-up to go by.

    You missed a good game.

  57. starderup says: Oct 15, 2012 7:37 AM

I had a feeling that the Raiders were better than their record would indicate. 3 INTs in the first half told me I was right.
Funny how there is no mention at all of the only undefeated team left all the way down here to page 3.
