Giants make a statement in San Francisco

Alex Smith, Mathias Kiwanuka AP

The Giants said heading into this week’s game against the 49ers that they didn’t think they were getting enough respect. After what they did to the 49ers on Sunday, everyone has to respect the Giants as contenders to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

The Giants went to San Francisco and put a beating on the 49ers on Sunday, dominating in all phases of the game and coasting through the fourth quarter on the way to an easy 26-3 win.

For the 49ers, the worst news from this game is that quarterback Alex Smith threw three interceptions and did not look like the efficient, consistent quarterback he’s been over the last year and a half. With backup Colin Kaepernick playing well in limited opportunities, could a quarterback controversy be coming? That’s the last distraction the 49ers need as they try to compete in a surprisingly tight NFC West.

For the Giants, today’s win combined with today’s loss by the Eagles means New York is 4-2 and all alone in first place in the NFC East. The Giants look like a playoff team, and they played like champions today.

So glad the Giants exposed the 9ers for who they really are

  2. logicalthinkersays says: Oct 14, 2012 7:28 PM

The Giants won a battle of overrated teams. The Redskins will humble NYG next week. The 49ers are who we thought they were…fraudulent.

Amazing…I don’t recall anyone picking this game for New York. Nothing like going out and earning some of that respect back.

  6. joetoronto says: Oct 14, 2012 7:30 PM

Hang on, didn’t the 49ers already win the Super Bowl?

In todays NFL, you need a quality QB to win big games, Alex Smith just doesn’t cut it.

  10. n0hopeleft says: Oct 14, 2012 7:32 PM

Where is everyone that guaranteed a 9ers victory?! Please dont go away now!

Revenge huh? Pathetic 9ers are 3rd best in their division.

  11. manuich1 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:32 PM

9ers got worked plain and simple. As the Giants get healthy there just going to get better. Big win for the GMen. So much for the best defense in the league. Be careful for what you ask for. 9ers played the wrong NY team.

Must have been Alex smiths finger this time. Or, maybe sf beat themselves.

Come on lets hear how the Giants are lucky and how Eli is going to get smashed.

The Champions went to SF and showed why they are the Champions and the 49ers once again showed why they are NOT!!!!!.

As for the Redskins fan see you Sunday at the Swamp!!!!!!

  26. yourfavoriteteamsucksbigtime says: Oct 14, 2012 7:36 PM

Nice to see the Giants prove again, they are the team to beat in the NFC. Niners are no where near as good as people think. D is above average, but Alex proved today, that if the team gets behind he can’t move the football. He is their downfall. Be surprised if they win Thursday.

  27. judsonjr says: Oct 14, 2012 7:36 PM

Alex Smith is a great QB….

provided he has a 10 point lead and can start every drive at midfield.

  28. riggz91 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:36 PM

I’m not knocking Smith but he’s efficient when they can run the ball play defense and dink&dunk it. Once they get down 10+ and he has to make plays 9ers are in trouble.

  29. manuich1 says: Oct 14, 2012 7:37 PM

To the Giants fans that have class, congrats on your win. This is one week. I have a feeling people are going to call the Niners overrated any time they lose. Still 4-2 and tied for 1st in the west. Gotta love the internet…

Not that I’m a Giants fan or like them, but suck it 49ners fans! How does it feel to get humbled like a jets fan? That’s twice you lost to the giants! Your QB is garbage, just like my QB

  34. daddyb1gdrawz says: Oct 14, 2012 7:40 PM

I am shocked this game went the way it did. I honestly thought the 49ers would be able to run the ball, which would make Alex Smith effective. This is why the 49ers will not win a Superbowl. If they run up against a team that can stop the run, they have no offense. I am really interested in seeing how next weeks game versus Seattle goes because they shut the run down.

  35. nedhigginssports says: Oct 14, 2012 7:42 PM

  40. bigblueelite says: Oct 14, 2012 7:44 PM

Earlier this year after the NFC Championship game 49er players were quoted as saying that the NY Giants did not win the game, rather the 49ers gave it away. Correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like after one Giant butt whooping that the Giants did win today.

  41. fdugrad says: Oct 14, 2012 7:44 PM

Great win Giants. Shows that they can play with the elite. Also Bradshaw rushing for 100+ yards. Great job there, and this is without 2 DTs (Chris Canty gets off PUP this week and Rocky Bernard was out), and a hobbled Nicks. Long season still, continue to ply hard and hopefully the Giants have seen enough of these injuries.

They get up for games like this, but it’s the ones like next week that you have to watch for.

They were a little to confident after beating the Jets and the Bills all I saw on PFT was they were going to beat all the NY teams, Problem is is we have Eli Manning and a dominant defense I hope all these TV talking heads will finally give us the respect we deserve!

  58. NJJohn says: Oct 14, 2012 7:50 PM

Sorry. My Bad. the 49ers are way better than the Giants. That defense is awesome. I can’t believe I even defended the Giants playoff win last year. What was I thinking?

So, how overrated is the NFC East now? Their 9-7 team schooled everyone last year and did it again today.

    NFC east 8-8 > Anyone elses 12-4

  59. earoyce says: Oct 14, 2012 7:51 PM

    79-3 vs. Jets/Bills

    3-26 vs. Giants

Everyone can stop drooling over the fact that the 9ers blew out 2 mediocre teams…that was after they got handled by the Vikings. San Fran looks elite when they can control the ball and play with a lead. Once Smith has play catchup and start putting the ball in the air, it’s a different story.

They beat down some terrible teams and then think they can hang with the Super Bowl Champions i think not.

Thanks for talking all week and now looking like complete mugs. Same for Florio and everyone who picked the 9ers to destroy the Giants.

9ers favoured by 6 yet they managed a mere 3 points.

NFL consider yourself on notice that the Super Bowl champions are a legit team.

Canty, KP, Bernard, Brown, Hill, Rivers, Nicks all to come back and get too 100% also. Yeah, legit.

Kurt Warner picking Alex Smith > Eli Manning on NFL Network also lol!

  70. goldrush36 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:04 PM

That was a beatdown. Niners lost momentum early and never recovered… But fluke? Give me a break. Giants always are at their best against good teams and their backs are against the wall.

  71. eddardofthehousestark says: Oct 14, 2012 8:04 PM

49ers fan here (guess we all haven’t crawled into holes yet). What is there to say? The 49ers got outplayed by a good football team. Alex Smith threw more touchdowns today than he has in his last 13 games. That doesn’t mean Alex Smith is suddenly a bad quarterback or “can’t win a super bowl,” it means he had a bad game. A team can’t get down on their quarterback after one bad game; especially when they are still only 4-2. If anything, the 49ers (and their fans) heads swelled up after beating the Jets/Bills 79-3. This was a good reality check, but let’s look at the facts. The Giants defense played lights out today, and the 49ers offense didn’t show up. It was like watching Mitt Romney debate Barack Obama. That being said, the 49ers didn’t suddenly get knocked out of the playoffs or lose their season. They got blown out by a good football team. Last time a good football team beat them they came roaring back. The 49ers defense showed up today and consistently held the G-Men to field goals but when your offense gives the other team the ball in the red zone multiple times (2 picks/kick return) you are bound to give up points. They will bounce back.

  72. randallflagg52 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:04 PM

Next up a beatdown from Seattle and the NFL’s best defense. The 9er’s hired the wrong Harbaugh to coach their team.

  73. eddardofthehousestark says: Oct 14, 2012 8:05 PM

**Correction, I said Smith threw more touchdowns than he had in his last 13 games. I probably don’t need to make this correction because it should be obvious but I meant interceptions.

  74. rickrock6661982 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:05 PM

I dont think anyone picked the giants to win this game. But it exposed the big difference between a team having an elite QB and a team having a mediocre one. Alex Smith is a guy that just needs to not get in the way for that team to be successful. He was lousy today and thats not going to do it against a team like the Giants. Everyone has a bad game but that cannot be a trend that continues otherwise it doesnt matter how good SF defense is

  86. rainponcho87 says: Oct 14, 2012 8:24 PM

This 49ers team seems susceptible to believing in their own hype. They started fast with two wins, everyone was talking them up and then had a let down in Minnesota. Then they crush two teams and then get schooled by the Giants. It is sometimes easier to be the “hunter” than the “hunted”. If they are going to go anywhere this season they are going to tune out the hype and think of themselves as the underdog. That’s what the Giants did this week.

I think SF can regroup. I must say that the NFC West is quite improved and fun to watch.

Another difference from last year, the Giants o-line is playing better this year, Bennett is more athletic than Ballard. Also, Manningham was good on the Giants, but many people overlook Domenik Hixon. Hixon is really good, it’s just that he has had some bad misfortune with injuries.

One of these writers need to take harbaugh to task on his game calling. He did smith no favors consistently rotating qbs. The collegey gimmicky options, pistols and wildcats were lame as well. You’re playing against the defending world champs, not Nichols state. He needs to stop showing how mart he thinks he is.

Not many teams recover from 3 INT’s no matter who the QB is or the rest of the team’s caliber. Some of you guys are just plain foolish. Peyton throws 3 picks and his team still loses. It’s a simple fact of life in the NFL. Can we talk about our D not getting the stops? How about special teams giving up good returns, missed kicks, Rogers dropping two picks… hell even Roman making personnel swaps right after big offensive plays only to go immediately backwards? it was a crapstorm of a game against a good team. Montana wouldn’t have recovered it.

I do find it ironic that as mentioned above not many people, if any, picked the Giants to win the NFC East and some said they would not even make the playoffs (the so called professional analysts). However, the Giants are the only team in the NFC East to have more points for than against.

    ———–

Fully agree. Hadn’t tried to draw a comparison, given that I hate SF and don’t care to think about it, but yes, they do mirror those ’97 Giants.

And I had picked them to go 10-6, as a wild card team (with Seattle winning the division), and wild card playoff loss — back in August when I made out my predictions.

San Fran and the Jets are showing exactly why you can’t have a two-QB system in the NFL. The Giants play against running QBs every year; they were not surprised at all by Kaepernick.

Still disappointing to leave 8 points on the field after the two Rolle picks – the Giants have to improve the offense inside the 10 yard line… 34-3 would have been far more indicative of what a blowout this really was.

    Two things here:

The Giants left a good 17-21 points on the field, settling for FGs with awful execution on those short fields.

The 49ers were better served to stick with Smith than to try and throw that Kaepernick wrinkle when behind. It only works when you have actually been successful moving the football. Kaepernick fools no one, especially when we have to face Vick and What Vick Lovers Wish He Had Turned Out to Be (next week vs. WSH), we are used to those gimmicks.

What you just saw was a frontrunning team that has no heart when they’re not bullying teams around and have to play from behind. Just like the Minnesota game. The Niners are still a great team. Every team has bad games, especially when winning the previous two weeks as they did (giants fans should know this better than anyone). Moreover, as a Giants fan I feel good about the win but not about the team, they still underperform when they don’t need to win and come out flat, and that’s also why, instead of talking crap about the Skins game and how we are going to win, as the niners fans did this past week, we should be slightly worried with how our team plays in these situations. I know most of the giants fans posting here talking trash will not be here next week as some 9ers fans are now to concede defeat if we lose, so instead of getting high and mighty, how about we actually talk about the qualities of the game, difficulties strengths etc., instead of just trash talking about how we’re going to beat down the skins, as the 9ers fans did this past week. If history tells us anything, we’re going to win in a very tight match or lose on a last minute fg, so please eat a slice of humble pie instead of looking like fools when our team inevitably comes out flat in a spot where our backs aren’t against the wall. It just looks ignorant otherwise because we all know this team.

P.S. hopefully see the niners again in January, niners are better than they showed and it will be another classic game like last years playoffs

  130. doe22us says: Oct 14, 2012 10:02 PM

One even has the balls to say Alex Smith is better than Eli Manning in the 4th Quarter. Alex Smith finally showed his true colors which is what I thought. So now the over rated Giants have now beat the 49ers @ their stadium not once, but two times in a row. Ouch.

And to say Harblow is a better coach than Coughlin I think you just got a taste of your own medicine. Did you see the prepared team that was on the field today and the unprepared team? Harblow has a lot to learn folks.

Some great throws into tight spots and the receivers made some great snags as well. As a niner fan, today was very frustrating. The giants taught them a lesson. But let’s not get crazy, this is the same niner team that played them tough twice last year. I am not happy with there play but the roster is pretty talented and as the giants proved twice in five years its how you play in January and beyond that really matter. I am a bit disillusioned with the niners play…d not quite as edgy and the o although better is still limited. However, lets not get carried away, giants you guys played great but long way to go….lets see how it plays out.

9er fan is the worst, most sports-clueless, classless fan in the NFL.

Not all of them, but easily 80%. This is my opinion formed over 40 years of watching them. i’m 48. When I was a kid, they were the lovable losers, and there was no angst between Raider and Niner fans. The problems started when they happened upon success and became the first team to have back to back HOF QB’s. They could not handle the success and took to shouting everyone down by saying “Greatest of All-Time” and “5 Superbowls”. I guess it’s just human nature for them to fat drunk and happy, but it attracted nothing but spoiled fans of winning, and they became so classless that the Raider fans focused hate on them, after being verbally assaulted by braindead fans over them winning and us losing. When in the past we had pretty much ignored them and given any real fan respect, like a fan with class does.

Try to talk football, like reality based football, with one of these fringe fans. It’s like talking to a 10 year old.

No Rocky Bernard, No Chris Canty, No Kenny Phillips, No Terrell Thomas. Yet we walk right into Candlestick and throw the 9ers a beatdown!!! Gotta love it!!! Can you smell that??? Thats that new World Championship aroma!!!! Take a deep whiff……

Hey San Fran, how does that bullseye on your back feel?

Not so easy anymore is it.

Wow funny all the 49ers fans see you when it counts you did in Jan of this year and do you recall what happened.

the 49ers #1 target was #3 and tossed aside by the Giants.

The Giants have kids comming off the bench that are better then most teams starters its called depth and that is what it takes in todays NFL

@spicoli how in the world does a loss yesterday in any way relate to niner teams of 25-30 years ago…or for that matter the fans. Pretty sure as a fan I am not clueless, I have probably forgot more football than you ever knew. I give your team full credit, have even pulled for them the last two Super Bowls they won. Good football is good football, your team played that yesterday. To invoke Montana and young and to try and denegrate them sounds like sour grapes from your past. That was their time this is your teams time. I am a fan of the game and recognize greatness when I see it. My niners had it then your team, especially Eli has it now. Don’t bring up things together that should be separated to grind your axe.

Nothing says revenge like putting 3 points on the board the entire game. Can’t send Kyle Williams death threats over this one whiners fans.

    Good game by the Gmen!!!

Good to stay with the running game even when it seemed it wasn’t going to happen yesterday. The passing game, well, what else can we say, I guess, it will always be there as long as you have Eli and his talented WRs.

And yes, there were definitely points left out on the field, but the D was stingy enough to not let the 9ers get back in it.

But what is all this trash talking, it’s a mid Oct. game, and yes, one win does count a lot in the NFL, I’m sure everyone knows, “Any Given Sunday.”

I did think it was going to be a good game, not much of a blood bath as some (mostly 9ers fans) predicted. But come on now, all of this, “we’ll see you in January” back and forth is really non-sense.

And there’s some violent-laden comments in here as well. Wow, dude, calm down, it’s a football game, chillax!!!

Niners were actually the “fluke” last year just check out how soft there schedule was…..but enough about them.

Giant fans here’s what gets me fired up moving forward.

    1. Giants get 2 of our best DT’s back next week Canty/Bernard

    2. Hosley and Prince look to be very solid young corners and getting better each week. This allows Rolle to play FS and you saw it pay off yesterday with 2 picks

    3. O-line is coming together and run game clicking 2 weeks in a row. Bradsahw/Wilson/ Brown has us loaded at RB

    4. Giants are loaded at WR

    5. D-line back on track with 6 sacks and just getting started

Super Bowl Champs and getting better every week………..I’m fired up!
