Report: Chiefs offer Pioli a contract extension

Chiefs fans might not be fond of Scott Pioli at the moment, but the guy who signs his checks still is.

Jason LaCanfora of reports that Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has offered his general manager a two-year contract extension, but Pioli has yet to sign it.

They are apparently still discussing the buyout language in the deal, which is the reason it hasn’t been signed yet.

Pioli arrived in 2009, and the Chiefs doubled their win total (from two to four). The big jump came with a 10-6 record and playoff berth in 2010, but things have sagged since then, with hand-picked coach Todd Haley fired and hand-picked quarterback Matt Cassel plateauing.

They’re 8-13 since the end of the 2010 season.

Neither Pioli nor Hunt commented on the report.

Makes perfect sense in Kansas City, where mediocrity is over-achieving.

Oh my God, this is amazing!

I actually feel sorry for Chiefs fans, this is weird.

    Seems awfully premature.

As a Bronco fan, I applaud this decision LOL

No wonder Pioli is smiling and laughing in that picture. His time in Kansas City has proven that he is one of those guys (like most corporate execs) who makes big bucks for failure.

Ahahaha! Will they extend Cassel next?

What’s next, a Matt Cassel contract extension? How the hell can Pioli get a new contract. He’s been among the 5 worst GMs the last 5 years.

    Karma for cheering Cassel’s injury.

    KC fans deserve better

Pioli obviously has got photos or knowledge or somethin’ on the Chiefs powers-that-be.

Unfortunately Pioli backed the wrong horse when Weis and Haley were there.

In his only year with Weis (former OC of NE), Cassel finished the year 262/450, for 3,116yds with 27 tds & 7 ints. A far cry from his performance since. Clearly he has the ability to start in the NFL, but only with the right system.

I’m not saying Pioli should have made Weis the head coach (Notre Dame anyone?) but they had a successful offence with Weis as OC (with Cassel at QB) and a successful defence with Crennel as DC. The fact that they let one walk away and the other become a (so far ineffective) HC falls on Pioli

This is why it’s not usually a good idea for fans to do things like start online petitions.

While the intent may be commendable, it unfortunately usually has the opposite of the intended effect.

Management gets defensive and circles the wagons. The way they look at it, if they don’t give a vote of confidence to whoever the fans are trying to get rid of, they’re showing weakness.

No front office will ever allow it to appear that it allowed fans to influence their decision making process.

    Pioli and Hunt.
    Dumb and dumber.

Actually a smart move. Pioli is a smart guy – any player is a crapshoot. Some work out some don’t. The Patriots have whiffed on plenty of players.. They just also have Tom Brady

  16. hankstramjr says: Oct 14, 2012 1:32 PM

The “Clark’s ” sure know how to reward their fan base.

  17. hankstramjr says: Oct 14, 2012 1:36 PM

Matt Cassel, Tyson Jackson, Jon Baldwin, Dontari Poe. Sure, why not offer him an extension.

As a Chargers can I only think its fair that if my team keeps Norv around that KC keeps Pioli’s vision too. Maybe Bowlen can rehire Little McHoodie Jr back too.

  19. doublebase says: Oct 14, 2012 1:45 PM

Keep in mind Scott Pioli is a guy that has never coached or played in the NFL. He owes his entire career to Bill Belichick – this is a guy that had the best coach coaching some of his borderline selections. And for those who think he selected Tom Brady…he didn’t, that award has been handed to Bobby Grier and Dick Rehbien. I feel bad for the Chiefs.

  20. thegreatgabbert says: Oct 14, 2012 1:48 PM

Scott is concerned that that option to buy him out once a week, (by midnight on Sunday), for $300 does not give him a feeling of security.

  21. bleed4philly says: Oct 14, 2012 1:54 PM

Pioli is not the problem, they need a qb! They are the Seahawks of the afc!

  22. rajbais says: Oct 14, 2012 1:56 PM

Jason Whitlock’s ears are unleashing steam.

BTW, I never knew that Bill Ford owned the Chiefs.

  23. villegas81 says: Oct 14, 2012 1:59 PM

Yes plz give him a life contract

Only in America is failure rewarded. Must be nice to be Pioli. Ride your success on Bill Belichick’s coattails (like Weis, Crennel, Mangini, McDaniels etc) suck when on your own, and then get a contract extension. Wish I was so lucky.

  25. nflhof says: Oct 14, 2012 3:12 PM

Major power play and the ultimate use of the media by Pioli.

  26. 203chiefsfan says: Oct 14, 2012 3:38 PM

I think I want to throw up

If Clark Hunt gives Scott Pioli an extension, then I am done with the Chiefs. I have been a fan for over 25 years. If Clark is so DUMB and Tone Deaf to give Pioli an extension when the fans want Pioli Fired, and the Team Sucks (largely because of Pioli’s decisions) then Clark obviously does not want me to be a fan of the Chiefs. The remaining Chiefs Fans can enjoy Suckhood as long a Pioli is here.
